Rest In Peace- Specialist Bradley Scott Beard, SVC Btry 2/17th FA

I went to the Memorial last night, not entirely sure what to expect.  I got there ahead of time... but not far enough ahead.  It's a nice church, with a main parking lot, and a secondary parking lot, and a small parking lot by the front, and they were all full.  There were cars parked on the sidewalks, pickup trucks in the corners, motorcycles jammed together in spaces, and other cars driving around looking for spaces.

I parked two blocks away and walked back.

The church was full, with people standing in the back, like the last Sunday Mass was in the old days, and they locked the doors behind me and opened another hall across the lot and had TV feed into it from the church.  I snuck into the church body, found the other vets on pews on the right side, stood at the wall behind them.  There were older people, men in suits and ties (like myself), younger people in more casual dress (but no old jeans or sweatshirts), some soldiers in uniform, the Rolling Thunder guys in their best leathers, kids in their teens and younger, and some shaky seniors.  A cross section of a whole community.

It was all well organized, well done.  Spec. Beard's sister is a music student, and she wrote and sang a requiem for him, with a very well trained but still occasionally quavering voice.  At its end she sat at the piano and picked out the notes of Taps, very slowly.  The vets all stood for that.  It was pretty quiet then, except for the muted sounds of heavy breaths, and some choked sobs.

The eulogy was followed by several of his friends and relatives speaking of him.  I learned he was supposed to be wimpy when he was a kid, but grew into a strong young man.  He visited Arlington with his family as a teenager, and started a progression into love of his country and care for his community.  He picked up a phrase somewhere- "Freedom isn't Free", and eventually it led him to join the Army.

He dislocated a knee in Basic Training, but somehow talked the doctors to letting him stay.  He volunteered for Iraq, and for road clearing duty. And he was proud to be there, wrote back about his caring for his family, his willingness to serve there so we'd be safe here.

But they talked a lot more about how funny he was, and how helpful he always was to everyone, and they told stories of the things he did they all remembered and laughed about.  Like when they were on vacation in Florida, and he ordered the very expensive shrimp cocktail at the fancy restaurant, and when it came there were only four shrimp.  So he asked for a doggie bag for the enormous pile of lettuce they were laid on, because he wanted to get his money's worth.

They filled in a clear picture of the kind of young man every society needs for its future generation.  And I remembered one of the clearest things about war- it is always far, far too often that it is our best who don't come back.

It wound down with a beautiful presentation by a fullsize formal choir, in tuxes and black gowns and a real director.  Very nice.

When it ended I wanted to shake his mother's hand and pass on the blessings that came back to me from my first e-mail on this.  But the press of people around the family made that more than unlikely, and they looked tired when they walked by, so I decided to let them be and let my prayers go up for them later.

The drive home through the darkness seemed long.
