Hugo R. Lopezlopez, 20, of La Habra, Calif., died Jan. 27 at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, from wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Rawah, Iraq on Nov. 20, 2005. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, (Forward). Cpl. Felipe C. Barbosa, 21, of High Point, N.C., died Jan. 28 from a non-hostile vehicle accident in Fallujah, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. The accident is currently under investigation. |

Scott, 24, of Tunnel Hill, Ga. Arrelanopandura and Dewey died Jan. 20 from a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations in Haqlaniyah, Iraq. They were both assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, their unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the
death of Captain Michael R. Martinez, HHT, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment
(ACR). CPT Martinez was one of 12 personnel killed when the Black
Hawk helicopter in which they were traveling went down near Tall Afar,
Iraq, shortly before midnight on Saturday, 7 January 2006.
CPT Martinez was assigned to Fort Carson as the
Chief, Legal Assistance. He volunteered to deploy in support of
3rd ACR in November 2005. CPT Martinez's previous assignments as a
Judge Advocate were at 24th Infantry Division and Fort Riley and the
Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth. He was a member of the
147th Judge Advocate Officer Basic Course. Prior to his
appointment as a Judge Advocate, CPT Martinez had served as a Paralegal
Specialist and later Court Reporter, rising to the rank of Staff
Sergeant (E-6). His enlisted assignments included tours at Fort
Riley, KS, Fort Wainwright, AK, and the Missouri Army National Guard.
He was a 1998 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law,
Columbia, MO. He received his undergraduate degree from the Upper
Iowa University, Fayette, IA, in 1995.
CPT Martinez was 43 years old and married. We
extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Kelly, his three sons,
Alexander, Colby, and Benjamin, and his stepdaughters, Kathryn and
Samantha.

memorial service, will follow as soon as they become available. I
ask that you remember the Martinez family in your prayers at this most
difficult of times.

Adam L. Cann, 23, of Davie, Fla. Cpl. Albert P. Gettings, 27, of New Castle, Pa. Lance Cpl. Ryan S. McCurdy, 20, of Baton Rouge, La. Cann was killed in action Jan. 5 by a suicide bomb attack on an Iraqi police recruitment center in Ar Ramadi, Iraq. He was assigned to Security Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). Gettings and McCurdy died Jan. 5 from wounds received as a result of enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Fallujah, Iraq. Gettings was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
