Staff and wire reports
Posted : Wednesday Dec 31, 2008 12:24:45 EST
The single-seat Harrier crashed in the woods approximately one mile
east of the air station, near N.C. 101. The crash occurred as the
pilot was returning from a routine training flight, according to an
air station spokeswoman.
Local authorities said the crash did not affect
any of the few homes in the area.
Another AV-8B Harrier, which can hover and take
off or land vertically, crashed in February near the air station.
The pilot in that crash was not injured.
Monday’s mishap comes on the heels of a deadly
Dec. 8 crash in San Diego, in which an F/A-18D Hornet plunged into a
neighborhood near MCAS Miramar. Although the pilot ejected safely,
four people on the ground were killed.

No survivors in B-52 bomber crash off Guam
The Air Force bomber crashed on Monday, killing all six
aboard
The Associated Press
updated 6:38 p.m.
CT, Wed., July. 23, 2008
HONOLULU - All six crew members
aboard a B-52 bomber that crashed off Guam were killed, the Air Force
said Wednesday.
A wide search effort has shifted
focus from rescue to recovery of the crew. Two
bodies have been found; the Air Force, without elaborating, said in a
news release that forensic specialists were trying to identify
additional remains recovered.
"Losing this bomber crew
has been a tragedy felt by everyone here and across the Air Force,"
said Brig. Gen. Doug Owens, commander of the 36th Wing.
The six crew members were
identified as Maj. Christopher M. Cooper, 33, aircraft commander; Maj.
Brent D. Williams, 37, navigator; Capt. Michael K. Dodson, 31, co-pilot;
1st Lt. Joshua D. Shepherd, 26, navigator; 1st Lt. Robert D. Gerren, 32,
electronic warfare officer; and Col. George Martin, flight surgeon.
Martin, whose age was not
immediately available, also was the deputy commander of 36th Medical
Group at Andersen Air Force Base.
A panel of Air Force officers is
investigating the crash.
The unarmed bomber crashed
Monday during a swing around the island as part of Guam Liberation Day
celebrations, marking the day when the U.S. military arrived to retake
control of the island from Japan during World War II. The B-52 had been
scheduled to conduct a flyover in a parade.
The crew was based at Barksdale
Air Force Base in Louisiana. They were deployed to Guam with the 20th
Expeditionary Bomb Squadron as part of the U.S. military's continuous
bomber presence mission in the Pacific.
The B-52 has been the backbone
of the U.S. military's manned strategic bomber force for more than four
decades, used for missions from attacks to ocean surveillance. It's
capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S.
inventory, including cluster bombs and guided missiles.
B-52s were first placed into
service in 1955, and 93 remain in the Air Force's fleet.
The Air Force has been rotating
B-1, B-2 and B-52 bombers through Guam since 2004 to boost the U.S.
security presence in the Asia-Pacific region while other U.S. forces in
the area have been sent to the Middle East.
Monday's crash is the third for
the military this year on Guam, a U.S. territory 3,700 miles southwest
of Hawaii.
A Navy EA-6B Prowler electronic
warfare aircraft crashed into the ocean Feb. 12. Four crew members
ejected from the aircraft and were rescued by helicopter.
Eleven days later, an Air Force
B-2 crashed at Andersen shortly after takeoff in the first-ever crash of
a stealth bomber. Both pilots ejected safely. The military estimated the
cost of the loss of the aircraft at $1.4 billion.
The Air Force's last crash
involving a B-52 was also to perform for spectators.
On June 24, 1994, a bomber was
practicing touch-and-go landings before an air show at Fairchild Air
Force Base in Washington state when it plunged to the ground and
exploded, killing all four on board, according to the Air Combat Command
in Langley Air Force Base, Virginia.

July 21, 2008
Associated Press
HONOLULU - Rescue crews were searching a vast area of floating debris
and a sheen of oil today for crew members of an Air Force B-52 bomber
that crashed off the island of Guam, officials said.
At least two people were recovered from the waters, but their
condition was not immediately available, the Coast Guard said.
Six vessels, three helicopters, two F-15 fighter jets and a B-52
bomber were involved in the search, which had covered about 70 square
miles of ocean, said Coast Guard spokeswoman Lt. Elizabeth Buendia.
"We have an active search that's going to go on throughout the
night," she said Monday. The Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force and
local fire and police departments were involved.
The B-52 bomber based at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana was en
route to conduct a flyover in a parade when it crashed around 9:45
a.m. today about 30 miles northwest of Apra Harbor, the Air Force
said.
The Liberation Day parade celebrates the day when the U.S. military
arrived on Guam to retake control of the island from Japan.
The Air Force said a board of officers will investigate the accident.
The accident is the second for the Air Force this year on Guam, a U.S.
territory 3,700 miles southwest of Hawaii.
In February, a B-2 crashed at Andersen Air Force Base shortly after
takeoff in the first-ever crash of a stealth bomber. Both pilots
ejected safely. The military estimated the cost of the loss of the
aircraft at $1.4 billion.
The B-52 is a long-range, heavy bomber that can refuel in mid air.
Since the 159 foot-long bomber was first placed into service in 1955,
it has been used for a wide range of missions from attacks to ocean
surveillance. Two B-52s, in two hours, can monitor 140,000 square
miles of ocean surface.
The B-52 Stratofortress has been the backbone of the manned strategic
bomber force for the United States for more than four decades. It is
capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the
U.S. inventory, including cluster bombs and precision guided missiles.

Two bodies found after B-52 crash near Guam

- A U.S. Air Force B-52 with six airmen crashed off
the island of Guam
- Rescuers search a point in the Pacific about 30
miles northwest of Guam
- The B-52H Stratofortress was based at Barksdale
Air Force Base in Louisiana
(CNN) -- Two airmen were found dead in the
Pacific Ocean and rescuers were trying to find four others after a
U.S. Air Force B-52 crashed off the island of Guam on Monday, the Air
Force said.
Rescuers found the bodies about 30 miles northwest
of Guam, not far from where the bomber was believed to have crashed at
about 9:45 a.m. local time, the Air Force said.
One of the dead airmen was identified, but the
identity was withheld pending family notification, the Air Force said.
Search crews have found no survivors, but they are
still looking, said Lt. Elizabeth Buendia, a spokeswoman for the U.S.
Coast Guard in Guam, which is a U.S. territory.
The B-52H Stratofortress had six airmen aboard and
was on a training mission when it crashed, the Air Force said. It was
scheduled to fly over crowds celebrating Liberation Day, which
commemorates the U.S. capture of Guam from Japan in 1944, the Air
Force said.
The bomber was based at Barksdale Air Force Base in
Louisiana but was at Guam's Andersen Air Force Base as part of a
four-month rotation, said Capt. Joel Stark, an Andersen Air Force Base
spokesman.
No weapons or munitions were aboard the aircraft and
information on what led to the crash wasn't available, the Air Force
said.
In February, a B-2 stealth bomber
crashed shortly after takeoff from Andersen Air Force Base. Two crew
members ejected and were in good condition afterward.

| Airman dies as 2 fighter jets
collide during training over Gulf of Mexico |
EGLIN AIR FORCE
BASE, Fla. (AP) _ An Air Force fighter pilot died Wednesday after
his jet and another likely collided during a training exercise and
crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. The other pilot was rescued and
is expected to survive.
The single-seat F-15C Eagles crashed Wednesday off the Florida
Panhandle, said Col. Todd Harmer, commander of the 33rd Fighter
Wing, 58th Fighter Squadron. The pilots had ejected and were later
rescued.
The base has suffered a "great loss," Harmer said in an
e-mailed statement. He said, "We will continue to do
everything we can to assist our families and airmen at this tragic
time."
The cause of the collision about 35 miles south of Tyndall Air
Force Base was not immediately known, but the Air Force will
investigate, Harmer said. Weather in the area was clear.
The exercise emphasized "basic maneuvers and tactics,"
Harmer said.
A Coast Guard rescue jet located one pilot and radioed the
location to a fishing vessel, which picked him up, said Coast
Guard Petty Officer James Harless. A Coast Guard helicopter then
hoisted the pilot off the vessel.
That pilot told rescuers he saw the other pilot also eject but
lost him in the clouds, Harless said. He told them the approximate
location for the second pilot, who was found by a Coast Guard
helicopter, Harless said.
Both pilots had been with the wing "for quite some
time," Harmer said.
No debris from the jets has been found, Harless said.
The Air Force grounded all of its F-15s — nearly 700 — after
the catastrophic failure of an F-15C during a routine training
flight in Missouri in November. The pilot safely ejected.
Most were back in service by January, but others were grounded
indefinitely after defects were found.
The Air Force began using the F-15C in 1979. The planes, built by
McDonnell Douglas Corp., were deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1991
in support of Operation Desert Storm and have since been used in
Iraq, Turkey and Bosnia.
The planes can fly as high as 65,000 feet, and each costs about
$30 million, according to the Air Force. |

Navy Identifies SEAL who Died During
Training Exercise
Story Number: NNS080215-14

From Naval Special Warfare Group 2 Public Affairs
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- Senior Chief Special
Warfare Operator Thomas J. Valentine, (SEAL), 37, of Ham Lake, Minn.,
died from injuries suffered while conducting parachute training
operations in Casa Grande, Ariz., Feb. 13.
The incident took place while conducting training at a military training
facility previously used for parachute training by Navy personnel in
Marana, Ariz. Casa Grande Emergency Medical Service personnel pronounced
Valentine dead at approximately 9:20 a.m. EST. An investigation by the
Navy, Naval Criminal Investigative Service and local authorities to
determine the details of the incident is in progress.
"Senior Chief Valentine was one of the finest SEALs I have ever
known. He served his country with valor during multiple tours to
Afghanistan and Iraq," said Capt. Scott Moore, commander, Naval
Special Warfare Development Group. "A role model, mentor, and
incredible leader, Tom epitomized what we as SEALs strive for, a
complete commitment to excellence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to
his wife, son, daughter, and entire family. His loss is felt by the
entire Naval Special Warfare community."
Valentine enlisted in the U.S. Navy Aug. 10, 1989 and graduated from
boot camp at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., in October. In
January 1990, Valentine entered Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S)
training in Coronado, Calif., Class 169.
Following graduation from BUD/S, Valentine attended other advanced
training courses and reported to an East Coast-based SEAL Team in
November 1990. He served in East Coast-based SEAL Teams the remainder of
his career.
His military awards and decorations include the three Bronze Stars with
"V" for Valor, two Joint Service Commendation Medals, three
Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps
Achievement Medals, three Combat Action Ribbons, five Good Conduct
Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, seven
Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, NATO Medal, two National Defense Service
Medals, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism
Expeditionary Medal, Naval Arctic Service Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation
Medal (Kuwait), and Southwest Asia Service Medal.
"This is a stark reminder that what these warriors do on a daily
basis is very dangerous, both on and off of the battlefield. It's
incredibly important for them to train like they're going to fight to
ensure success on the battlefield. This premise demands potentially
dangerous training evolutions," said Lt. David Luckett, Naval
Special Warfare spokesperson.
Valentine is survived by his wife, two children, parents, brother and
sister.

Navy identifies SEAL killed during
live-fire exercise
By CHELSEA J. CARTER Associated Press Writer
Article Launched: 02/01/2008 10:33:19 AM PST
SAN DIEGO—A Navy SEAL shot and killed during a live-fire exercise
was identified Friday as a 22-year-old Las Vegas man.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Shapoor Alexander Ghane Jr.
died Wednesday from gunshot wounds suffered during a training exercise
at a facility run by contractors in Lake Cormorant, Miss.
Ghane, known as Alexander, was participating with
his Coronado-based SEAL team in a "close-quarter combat"
training scenario—fighting an enemy with weapons at very close
range, said Lt. Tommy Crosby, a Naval Special Warfare Group 1
spokesman in Coronado, Calif.
The shooting occurred at the Mid-South Institute of
Self-Defense Shooting, a contractor facility sometimes used by the
military for specialized training, Crosby said.
Ghane was pronounced dead after being taken via air
ambulance to Elvis Presley Memorial Hospital.
Ghane's SEAL team mates described him as driven and
dedicated.
"Alex died doing what he loved. He died a SEAL,
with his teammates around him," said Ghane's unit commander,
whose identity was withheld because of classified nature of the team's
missions.
Ghane joined the Navy in June 2004 and entered SEAL
training in November 2004. He joined the West Coast seal teams in June
2007.
"Our family is devastated at the sudden loss of
Alexander," his family said in a statement released by the Navy.
"We are proud of him, proud of all of his accomplishments and the
man that he had become."
Crosby said no other details surrounding the death
would be immediately released.
The death was under joint investigation by the Naval
Criminal Investigative Service and the DeSoto County Sheriff's
Department.
The Navy has about 2,300 SEALS, known for their
elite special operations training and missions, based in Coronado and
Little Creek, Va.
