On 23 May 71, Source lost contact with his unit during operations against ARVN forces in PHU VANG District, THUA THIEN Province. For the next three days, he was unable to return to the unit. On 26 May 71, Source was captured by the 54th ARVN Inf Regiment in PHU VANG District. Another member of the K-2 Sap Bn was captured with Source. g. Significant Activities. Source received nine years of formal education at his POB from 1959 to 1968. From 1968 to Jul 69, he worked on the CAN Ha Hamlet Cooperative Farm. On 20 Jul 69, Source was drafted into the NVA and was assigned to the 1st Plat, 5th Co, 31st Sap Bn, Ha Tay Province Unit, located at NOI Hamlet, THUONG LAN Village, MY DUC District, HA TAY Province. From Jul 69 to Mar 70, he received sapper, infiltration, and political training with the 31st Sap Bn. In Dec 69, Source was promoted to PFC. From Mar to May 70, the 31st Sap Bn infiltrated to the RVN, arriving in THUA THIEN Province. From May 70 to May 71, Source was a member of the 2nd Plat, 1st Co, K-2 Sap Bn (aka CHI THUA II Sap Bn), 5th Regt, TTH MR. On 26 May 71, he was captured in PHU VANG THIEN Province. h. US PW Sighting in HA TAY Province, NVN: a. Circumstances of Sighting. In mid-Mar 67, Source was playing in the schoolyard in CAN HUU Village, QUOC OAI District, HA TAY Province, NVN. At 1000 hours, Source was called by his schoolmates to the street where a US PW was passing by in a jeep. The US PW was sitting between two armed security guards in the back seat while two more guards were sitting in the front seat. The guards were armed with K-54s and AK-47s. Source observed the US PW as he passed by for approximately 10 seconds at a distance of three meters. The US PW was blindfolded but it was undetermined if he was bound at the hands. The PW appeared to be in good physical condition. Source did not know where the PW was being taken. b. Description of PW: (1) Identification: The US PW was described as being Caucasian with blond hair and a mustache. Due to the brief duration of the observation, Source was unable to provide further information (2) Clothing Worn by PW. The Us PW was dressed in green underclothing. (3) Capture Data. On the same day in mid-Mar 67, after the Page 3 of 4 sighting, Source was told by members of the CAN HUU Village Militia that the US PW had just been captured that day near NGOC LIEP Village, QUOC OAI District, HA TAY Province, NVN (see overlay attached to this report). A local newspaper later reported that the US PW was flying an F-105 airplane on a mission to bomb HOA LAC Airfield, HA TAY Province, NVN (exact location unknown). c. VC/NVA Policy Concerning the Treatment and Disposition of US PW. Source was unable to provide information concerning VC/NVA treatment policy and disposition of US PW. d. Biographical Correlation. No correlation could be drawn between the MACV Biographic File and Source's information. e. Photo Identification. Source was unable to identify the US PW from the US PW Photo album. (U) COMMENTS: Source was tested and scored Average (25) on the Cross Cultural IQ Test. Source answered all questions willingly, and his replies to control questions were consistent.
