1LT Victor H. Thompson III was a U.S. Air Force pilot assigned to the 531st Tactical Fighter
Squadron, 3rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, 7th Air Force. On March 16, 1967, Thompson was
conducting a close air support mission over a Viet Cong base camp near the mouth of the
Cua Soirap River. While making a strafing run over the target, his F-100 (#56-3277) jet was
observed to impact the ground and explode after being struck by hostile fire. His body was
not recovered. On August 21, 1973, remains believed to be Thompson’s were repatriated to
the U.S. They were positively identified on January 10, 1974. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

On January 10, 1974, the Central Identification Laboratory–Thailand (CILT, now DPAA) identified the remains of First Lieutenant Victor H. Thompson III, missing from the Korean War.

First Lieutenant Thompson entered the U.S. Air Force from Texas and was assigned to the 531st Tactical Fighter Squadron, 3rd Tactical Fighter Squadron. On March 16, 1967, 1st Lt Thompson piloted an F-100 Super Sabre (tail number 56-3277) on a close air support mission over South Vietnam. While making a strafing run at the target, the aircraft was hit by enemy fire, crashed, and exploded. 1st Lt Thompson did not survive the incident. His body was not recovered at the time of his loss. In 1973, the Vietnamese government repatriated human remains that U.S. analysts identified as those of 1st Lt Thompson.
