EN3 MAYNARD LEE SMITH

Return to Service Member Profiles

On November 11, 1974, the Central Identification Laboratory–Thailand (CILT, now DPAA) identified the remains of Engineman Third Class Maynard Lee Smith, missing from the Vietnam War.

Engineman Third Class Smith entered the U.S. Navy from Missouri and served with Task Force 117, River Assault Squadron 11, Mobile Riverine Force. On February 7, 1968, he fell overboard from an armoured troop carrier at the confluence of the Co Chien and Tien Giang Rivers, Tra Vinh Province, South Vietnam. He drowned in the incident, and his body was not recovered at the time of his loss. In November 1974, U.S. investigators excavated a burial site near a fish pond in Vinh Long, South Vietnam, and recovered human remains and artifacts correlating to this loss; EN3 Smith was identified from these remains.

Engineman Third Class Smith is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
