Return to Service Member Profiles

Lieutenant Junior Grade James Patrick Shea entered the U.S. Navy from California and was a member of Attack Squadron 215, Carrier Air Wing 21, aboard the USS Hancock (CVA 19). On April 20, 1965, he was the pilot of a single-seat A-1H Skyraider (bureau number 139818) when it took off from the Hancock on a night armed reconnaissance mission in the vicinity of GC 48Q XE 78900 04100. After destroying several targets, LTJG Shea attacked a truck convoy near Phu Qui. During this attack, his aircraft entered a dive but could not pull up, and crashed into the ground near the target and exploded. No parachutes were seen before the crash, and attempts to locate or identify LTJG Shea following the incident have been unsuccessful. Today, Lieutenant Junior Grade Shea is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
