On February 12, 1996, Joint Task Force-Full Accounting (JTF-FA,
now DPAA) identified the remains of Captain Robert Louis Sandner,
missing from the Vietnam War.
Captain Sandner, who entered the U.S. Air Force from Florida,
was a member of the 1st Air Commando Squadron. On June 7, 1966,
he piloted an A-1E Skyraider (serial number 52-132449) on a
bombing mission over Kontum Province in South Vietnam. During
the mission, the Skyraider was shot down by enemy ground fire
and crashed across the border in Cambodia. Captain Sandner was
killed, and hostile presence in the area inhibited search
efforts at the time. In 1995, a joint U.S./Cambodian
investigative team located the crash site of the Skyraider and
recovered remains which were later identified as those of Capt
Sandner.
Captain Sandner is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at
the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
