Seaman Apprentice Kenneth Doyle Scaife entered the U.S. Navy from Pennsylvania and was a crew member aboard the USS William C. Lawe (DD 763), operating in the Gulf of Tonkin. On January 3, 1973, he was last seen by three of his shipmates on the mess decks and while the ship was in the vicinity of (GC) 49P BS 900 500. He later failed to report to a scheduled watch duty and was reported missing. Extensive searches for him were unsuccessful, and he remains unaccounted for. Today, Seaman Apprentice Scaife is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
