On October 24, 1985, the Central Identification
Laboratory-Hawaii (CILH, now DPAA) identified the remains of
Lieutenant Commander James Edward Sullivan, missing from the
Vietnam War.
Lieutenant Commander Sullivan joined the U.S. Navy from
Massachusetts and was a member of Attack Squadron 86. On October
29, 1972, he piloted an A-7C Corsair II (bureau number 156762)
on a surveillance mission over Nghe An Province. Lieutenant
Commander Sullivan's aircraft was shot down over the Gulf of
Tonkin, and he parachuted from the aircraft before it went down.
Once search and rescue aircraft reached LCDR Sullivan's
position, he was seen lying face-down in a Vietnamese Communist
boat. Attempts to rescue him were unsuccessful and he was
subsequently reported missing. In August 1985, the Vietnamese
government returned a set of remains to U.S. custody that they
associated with LCDR Sullivan, and forensic analysis confirmed
the identification shortly thereafter.
Lieutenant Commander Sullivan is memorialized on the Courts of
the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
