COL HAROLD VICTOR SMITH

Return to Service Member Profiles

On April 14, 2000, Joint Task Force-Full Accounting (JTF-FA, now DPAA) identified the remains of Colonel Harold Victor Smith, missing from the Vietnam War.

Colonel Smith entered the U.S. Air Force from Illinois and was a member of the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On March 7, 1966, he piloted an F-105D Thunderchief (serial number 62-4410) on a combat mission over North Vietnam. While engaged with an enemy target, his aircraft was shot down and he was killed. His unit initiated recovery efforts following their loss of communication with Colonel Smith, but these efforts were unsuccessful. In 1998, the U.S. recovered remains which were identified as those of Colonel Smith in 2000.

Colonel Smith is memorialized on Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
