On March 21, 2000, Joint Task Force–Full Accounting (JTF-FA)
identified the remains of Lieutenant Colonel Claude Arnold
Silva, missing from the Vietnam War.
Lieutenant Colonel Silva entered the U.S. Air Force from
Colorado and was a member of the 354th Tactical Fighter
Squadron. On January 29, 1967, he was the weapons officer aboard
an F-105F Thunderchief (tail number 62-4420, call sign "Tico
01") on a surface-to-air (SAM) suppression mission in support of
a strike mission against enemy targets in North Vietnam. The
aircraft was hit by an enemy SAM over Tuyen Quang Province and
crashed, killing Lt Col Silva. His remains were not recovered at
the time. However, in 1983, the Vietnamese government
repatriated partial human remains from this incident and between
1985 and 1999, U.S. investigators visited the crash location in
Tuyen Quang Province. Using modern forensic techniques, U.S.
investigators were able to identify Lt Col Silva from the
recovered remains.
Lieutenant Colonel Silva is memorialized on Courts of the
Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
