On February 14, 1975, the Central Identification
Laboratory–Thailand (CILT, now DPAA) identified the remains of
Major David John Richtsteig, missing from the Vietnam War.
Major Richtsteig entered the U.S. Marine Corps from Utah and
served with Battery C, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines Regiment, 3rd
Marine Division. In June 1967, Maj Richtsteig was a member of an
artillery unit conducting combat operations in the Quang Nam-Da
Nang Province in central Vietnam. He was taken as a prisoner of
war (POW) during this period. Following his capture, he was
interned at an unrecorded POW camp and died on or around
December 9, 1965, while still in enemy captivity. In 1974, the
Vietnamese government repatriated human remains that U.S.
analysts later identified as those of Maj Richtsteig.
