On October 14, 1989, the Central Identification Lab-Hawaii (CILHI,
now DPAA) identified the remains of Commander Charles Henry
Peters, missing from the Vietnam War.
Commander Peters, who entered the U.S. Navy from Nebraska, was a
member of Attack Squadron 155, Carrier Air Wing 15, embarked
aboard the USS Constellation (CVA-64). On July 1, 1966, he
piloted an A-4E Skyhawk (bureau number 150017) on a strike
mission over North Vietnam. While returning from the mission,
the Skyhawk was shot down by enemy ground fire and CDR Peters
was killed. Hostile presence in the area inhibited search
efforts at the time. In 1988, the Vietnamese government
repatriated remains which were later identified as those of CDR
Peters.
Commander Peters is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at
the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
