Return to Service Member Profiles

On March 6, 1997, Joint Task Force–Full Accounting (JTF-FA, now DPAA) identified the remains of First Lieutenant Gary Phelps Offutt, missing from the Vietnam War.

First Lieutenant Offutt entered the U.S. Air Force from Missouri and was a member of the 429th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On October 1, 1965, he piloted an F-100D Super Sabre (tail number 55-3543) on a strafing mission near Can Tho, South Vietnam. During the mission, his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed, and 1st Lt Offutt was killed in the incident. Enemy activity in the loss area prevented the recovery of 1st Lt Offutt's body at the time. Between 1993 and 1995, joint U.S./Vietnamese teams visited the crash site and recovered remains that U.S. analysts eventually identified as those of 1st Lt Offutt.

First Lieutenant Offutt is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
