On March 7, 1986, the Central Identification Lab-Hawaii (CILHI,
now DPAA) identified the remains of Captain William Darrell
McGrath, missing from the Vietnam War.
Captain McGrath entered the U.S. Navy from California and served
with Fighter Squadron 161, Carrier Air Wing 15, embarked aboard
the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43). On November 17, 1967, he piloted an
F-4B Phantom (bureau number 151488) on a combat air patrol
mission over North Vietnam. During the mission, the Phantom was
shot down by an enemy surface-to-air missile, killing CAPT
McGrath. His body could not be recovered from the crash site at
the time due to the presence of enemy forces nearby. In 1985,
the Vietnamese government repatriated remains which were later
identified as those of CAPT McGrath.
Captain McGrath is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at
the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
