Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Harold Edwin Gray Jr., who joined the U.S. Navy from New York, served with Attack Squadron 25 aboard the USS Midway (CVA 41). On August 7, 1965, he piloted an A-1H Skyraider (bureau number: 135329, call sign: "Canasta") on a combat mission over North Vietnam. After he delivered his ordnance on the target, his aircraft crashed and exploded in the vicinity of (GC) 48Q XE 729 316. Witnesses state that he made no attempt to bail out, and no parachutes were sighted. His remains could not be recovered. Today, Lieutenant Commander Gray is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
