On February 19, 1997, the Joint Task Force-Full Accounting (JTF-FA,
now DPAA) identified the remains of Captain Clifton William Clay
III, missing from the Vietnam War.
Captain Clay joined the U.S. Marine Corps from North Carolina
and was a member of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211. On April
12, 1967, he piloted a A-4E Skyhawk (bureau number 151039) on a
close air support mission over Vietnam. Captain Clay's aircraft
was downed by enemy fire during the mission, and he died in the
crash. An extensive aerial search found no sign of Capt Clay. In
June 1995, a Vietnamese citizen handed over a set of remains to
a joint U.S. and Vietnamese search team. Forensic analysis
identified the remains as those of Capt Clay.
Captain Clay is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the
National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
