CPT JOSEPH MIKE BERKSON

Return to Service Member Profiles

On May 22, 1973, the Central Identification Laboratory-Thailand (CILT, now DPAA) identified the remains of Captain Joseph Mike Berkson, missing from the Vietnam War.

Captain Berkson joined the U.S. Army from Illinois and was an adviser with the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) Rangers. On April 22, 1973, he was a passenger aboard a UH-1H Iroquois (tail number 70-15863) assisting in search and recovery operations in Quang-Tri Province, Vietnam. The Iroquois was downed by an enemy surface-to-air missile, and CPT Berkson was killed in the crash. Search and rescue efforts for the Iroquois were prevented by the heavy enemy presence near the crash site. In 1972, a search team reached the crash site and recovered the crew's remains, and CPT Berkson was identified from among them the following year.
