Captain Ramon Roderick Davis, who joined the U.S. Air Force from Iowa, was a member of the 12 Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 18th Fighter-Interceptor Group. On October 5, 1950, he departed Pusan Air Base, South Korea, piloting an F-51D Mustang (tail number 45-11606) as the flight leader in a two-plane armed reconnaissance mission over North Korea. As the formation flew near Sunchon, North Korea, enemy anti-aircraft fire hit and damaged Capt Davis's Mustang. Capt Davis attempted to head south to reach friendly territory, but the distance was too great for his damaged aircraft. He made an emergency landing on a sandbar in the Taedong River. The other pilot on the mission saw Capt Davis leave the aircraft, wave, and walk toward hills to the east of the river. Heavy enemy presence in the area prevented search and rescue operations for Capt Davis, and he was not seen again. No returning POWs mentioned having contact with Capt Davis, nor was he seen at any known holding point, interrogation center, hospital, or permanent POW camp. He has not been associated with any remains returned to U.S. custody after the ceasefire, and he is still unaccounted-for. Today, Captain Davis is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
