To all Military Personnel and Veterans (Active, Reserve, & Retired),

I sincerely apologize for any and all misrepresentations of myself and my Military Service to date. I make no excuses or reasons for this conduct. The statement on your web-site ("While he was at Wpns Trng Bn at Edson range in Camp Pendleton he was exposed for wearing unauthorized ribbons and received a court martial. He was busted to Gunny as a result. He left Edson range shortly after that and received orders back to his MOS somewhere in 22 area of Camp Pendleton.") is true and I did receive a Summary Court Martial in 1987 and was reduced from the rank of First Sergeant to Gunnery Sergeant.

Sometime in 2000 I started portraying myself falsely again and I no reason why and sincerely regret it. To all that I have made false claims to please accept this sincere apology. To all members of the Famed 1st Battalion 9th Marines (1/9) my sincerest apology!

For clarification, the information posted that states ("The fact that he got away with wearing ribbons he was not entitled to, even as a D.I. in 1971-1974, obviously encouraged him to continue the practice. I have little doubt that he showed up at every new command assignment bedecked as the reincarnation of Audie Murphy, and got away with the charades all the way up to and with a promotion to 1stSgt. When he got busted back down, it was noted that "he didn't have a clue that he had done anything wrong".) is not correct. I did not start wearing unauthorized ribbons until 1987 as a First Sergeant and received a Court Martial for it. There is a couple of photographs showing me as a DI wearing ribbons that I didn’t rate. These photographs were altered by myself. I still have the original photographs which show the correct decorations. I have attached one of the "original" and "altered" photographs. I had posted the altered photograph, which may be the reason that an assumption was made that I did this throughout my career for which I did not.

Sincerely,

It seems those your have dishonored with your STOLEN VALOR claims have rejected your apology. It's not OUR call - it is THEIR's.
  • Mr. Gugle's feeble attempt at an apology does not mitigate his transgressions against his fellow Marines, the Corps, and our Country.
  • I feel that Gugle is doing this to take the heat off so to speak, so he can continue in his charades!!
  • Let's face it, Larry Gugle was and still is a wannabe and has not stopped the charade.
  • His clarifications are just further excuses and he needs to make an apology that is reasonably specific and complete without any qualifiers. Please do not remove his name from your list.
  • Please DO NOT remove his name from your Wannabe list. I will never accept his apology.
  • His apology, while insufficient in and of itself in covering his many transgressions, have nothing at all to do with the subject at hand, namely, that he continues to mislead and deceive everyone he comes in contact with, about his lack of service.
  • I feel that his name should not be removed from the list of wannabes. Too many good men died over there to allow anyone to discredit their memory. If anyone has done anything to get their name on a list such as this, I don't feel the name should ever be removed. They knew at the time they were doing something that could catch up with them. KEEP HIS NAME ON THE LIST.
  • PLEASE DON'T TAKE LARRY GUGLES NAME OFF THE WANNABE LIST.
  • Mr.Gugle's letter of apology does not come across as contrite, it's more like he seeks to self rationalize his untruthfulness. If one knows that one wronged in the past, you don't continue the charade 30 years later!!!
  • I request that you don't remove Gugles name from your list of phoney wanabees...
  • ...indicating Gugle's letter is unacceptable and request that his name and data NOT BE REMOVED from the listing of wannabe's.
  • Please do not remove Larry.
  • Gugles name from the wannabe list. He is a fraud that continues to be exposed.
  • I respectfully request that Larry E. Gugle be kept on your network as a wannabe, poser, imposter!
  • Mr. Gugle's feeble attempt at an apology does not mitigate his transgressions against his fellow Marines, the Corps, and our Country.
  • Please do not remove Larry Gugle’s name from your listings of wannabe’s. His apology is hollow at best; he has and will continue to portray himself as a highly decorated Marine until they put his sorry ass in jail. He actually portrayed himself as a Sgt Major of the Marines at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier wearing a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and numerous other awards that he did not earn. This is one sick SOB and he deserves nothing from any of us that served with honor.
  • I believe Gugle is truly sorry he got caught in his web of lies and he is truly sorry that where ever he goes on the Internet he is confronted and exposed as a wannabe. After being exposed, he didn't change his behaviors only his AO.
  • this asswipe should never be removed from the Wannabe List of pownetwork.org. He has not changed his charade, just as a leopard will never change it's spots.
  • My feeling is: once an imposter, always an imposter
  • He does not mention half of the things that he did and said that were completely fraudulent, therfore I ask that you leave his name and actions posted on your records.
  • I say keep the POS on the POWMIA list for life.
  • I served with 1/9 in 1969 in Quang Tri and have been made aware of the letter of apology from Larry Gugle. I find the apology letter unacceptable and am wondering if he can be stripped of his retirement. I find the initial court martial insufficient in light of his multiple offenses
  • I would like to thank you for the email concerning <your> misadventure with this wannabe marine SgtMaj who portrays himself as a member of the First Bn Ninth Marines who saw combat in Vietnam. He is a disgrace to the Marine Corps, to ALL Marines and to himself, it is time that this charade come to an end and this person either be locked up < remainder of sentence edited out >. I don't have a clue as to why the POWNETWORK is even considering taking him off of their list of Wannabe's, he should be their Star Performer of what all should look for in a FAKE. I hope that you will be able to send your information to: Chuck and Mary Shantag at pownetwork.org.
  • Amazing.  He doesn't know when to quit.  Must have a need to be in the limelight all the time, and n o conscience.
  • I want them to add his so called apology to his profile along with a dissection of the pies it contains.
  • Please keep Gugle's name on the wannabee list. My brother in law made the ultimate sacrafice in 67. Nuff said.
  • Good morning:

I saw your post about L.G. over on the Marine Discussion Group at  Military.com.

I have followed the posts about him since they started. At this point, I think the best thing that we ALL can do is keep track of where he is. Doesn’t have to be the exact street address, but city and state would be helpful. That way, we can notify the local American Legion, VFW, etc. about him.

I quite frankly don’t think he’ll change. He’ll be quiet for a while and then resurface with some other story. He’s like a moth to the flame. Remember all the stories in “Stolen Valor?” Every one of them did…

What truly amazes me about this guy is that he got promoted all the way to First Sergeant. That had to be the result of great fitness reports. I know how hard I had to work, ‘cause it sure didn’t come easy for me.

I’m inclined to believe him when he says he started wearing all the ribbons when he was a first sergeant. It must have been somehow easy for him to change his awards page. Even in the old days before computers in the Marine Corps when we were still doing admin stuff on stone tablets, somebody would have to caught the discrepancies. I’d love to know how he pulled it off!

  • please keep his name on the wannabee's list.

  • I am herewith requesting that the letter of apology submitted to your organization by Larry Gugle be rejected, and that his name remain on your rolls as an imposter and wannabe poser.  Thank you.
  • This man is a complete asshole, He has disrespected the Corps and men of the 1st. Bn. 9th Marines. He is a FAKE and should be kept a FAKE.

John,

I am through trying to appease you or anyone else concerning this issue! I have made my apology without excuses or purpose of evasion! Like I stated in my Apology letter, I am truly sorry for what I have done, and stand by what I said.

I also have an “Official Copy” of my SRB and a complete transcript from my Court-Martial provided to me after it was over. I am not going pay the expense to copy the complete records and forward them to you or anyone else. The only thing I was willing to do was scan the entire document and forward it in “.jpg” format, but I fear that it would be questioned to its’ authenticity, so I decided against that, because I don’t want to go back and forth again with a thousand questions. Post this response on the 1/9 website and forward it to the POW Network.org if you want to, because I do have my pride and dignity and am not going to compromise it anymore just to perpetuate a “Witch Hunt”.

I must live with the shame I brought on myself and I am through trying to explain any further to anyone, and will not grovel just to make those who want to continually rub my nose in my mistake and keep pouring salt in the wound for the rest of my life. I have paid for my mistake 1987 and paid for my mistakes from 2000 to date by the loss of two jobs as a result of it.

The POW Network.org sent me an email with responses from approximately 20 different people all wanting to leave my name on the website and not accept my apology and continue to punish me for it, so it is responses like those that helped me make the decision to let the issue die here and now!

Larry Gugle < AB6LY@arrl.net >,

In response to your letter of refusal to cooperate in providing documents to substantiate your verbal claims,  I repeat, there is NO entry for an award of the Navy Achievement Medal (NAM) in your records for the period of 15Dec78-25May79 to which you refer as your initial award of same.  I do have an entry on your NAVMC-118 (9) for the NAM dated 810605, as you mentioned, for the period 14Jul80-8Jan81, however, that entry does NOT include notation of star device as you have stated.  I was also provided a copy of the single citation.  Lack of any wording "Gold Star in lieu of Second Award", which is common dialogue for subsequent awards, combined with the lack of similar "w/*" notation on your NAVMC-188 (9), makes your account less than credible. I offered you an opportunity to provide any and all documentation that you say would back up your claim but you elected to send a letter refusing to do so.

You also referenced your transcript of trial and your SRB page NAVMC-118 (13) < Record of Courts Martial > as another form of proof that you are entitled to that second award of the NAM, yet you are unwilling to supply those documents.  By now, perhaps you can grasp the idea that you have lost all credibility with us and thousands of other veterans.  You dug your own hole with your continued charade over a period of years of lies and deceit, all at the expense of honorable combat veterans who suffered, sacrificed, bled and of those who died in the Vietnam War.

You continue to circumvent issues brought to your attention and try to talk your way through. Documented proof to which you allude is not being produced, therefore your words have little meaning.

Regardless of what you say, or claim, or produce, I will remind you of the following statements sent to us by the National Personnel Records Center, St. Louis (NPRC):
      (1)  "the copies of the veteran's service record book pages provided on December 5, 2005 were taken from the Official Military Personnel File (OMPF) that was retired to this Center by Headquarters, United States Marine Corps shortly after the veteran was transferred to the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve effective April 1, 1990".
      (2)  "The retiree's record is maintained in the microfiche format.  This microfiche format was created at Headquarters, United States Marine Corps and not at this Center."
      (3)  "As stated previously, the response provided on December 5, 2005 is the official response from this Center based upon the documents contained inside the OMPF."
      (4)  "Any documentation provided to you by any source outside of this Center, the VA, or Headquarters, United States Marine Corps should not be taken as official documents, unless those documents bear the Seal of this Agency, the VA, or Headquarters, United States Marine Corps".

Any document you have produced is automatically submitted to the NPRC and HQMC for review, and I suspect is the reason that you are unwilling to submit anything further to support your e-mail claims.

Larry Gugle, you are hereby advised that we have been in correspondence with those you have come in contact with in Tennessee AND West Virginia on an ongoing basis. We also have letters from the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 in Cumberland , Maryland    where you attempted to pass yourself as a "Command Sergeant Major" and holder of Silver and Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts.   Wherever you go we have found the community to be more than willing to contact us when you are spotted.

I strongly advise you to remove any license plates indicating you are a Silver Star recipient, and I also advise you to stay away from any veterans organizations, rallies or functions.  You are not deserving to be in their presence.  You should remove any and all stickers on your car referring to service in the Vietnam War - remember the thought "If YOU weren't there SHUT UP".

Accordingly, your attempted apology is not complete, and is not acceptable.  a) You have failed to apologize for your charade as a Sergeant Major of Marines, b) as well as failing to apologize for public appearances during which you wore the uniform of a Sergeant Major of Marines, c) adorned with numerous combat decorations and campaign medals/ribbons you did not rate, during which d) you made speeches alluding to your fictional combat experiences.  e) You failed to mention you produced numerous documents and citations and forged signatures thereto which might lend credence to your false claims of heroism and your fraudulent association with The Walking Dead of 1/9.  f) You failed to mention your fraudulent resume's in Arizona, Tennessee and West Virginia.  You have failed to apologize for fraudulently applying for and using Tennessee Silver Star license plates.  You have failed to apologize, individually and respectfully, to each and every organization to which you fraudulently joined, or posted in -- most specifically the Military Order Of The Purple Heart.

You have been the subject of a television broadcast on "Wannabe's" in Channel 4, Washington, D.C. and you are a subject of disrepute on many Internet sites.  You have brought disgrace to the Marine Corps Drill Instructors Association and to the United States Marine Corps.  You haven't admitted to that either.

You are also reminded,  communications with you are shared with the pownetwork.org, the FBI and with the members of the 1/9 Network, Inc.

You will remain posted on the pownetwork website as a WANNABE as requested by the members.
