Membership Special  Investigation Team
By Direction of the President

Dear Mary and Chuck Schantag;

The long and careful investigation in the case of Larry E. Gugle 2602889 USMC has been completed.  I am submitting this letter to you on behalf of our President, Mr. Bill Hesse, hereby authorizing you to post on your website the exposure of Mr. Gugle as a wannabe and a fraud.

Our investigation included the documents you were instrumental in helping us to obtain under the Freedom Of Information Act of 1974, multiple telephone conversations with the NPRC and other organizations.

At the time prior to the investigation, Larry E. Gugle was serving as the Vice President of the First Battalion, Ninth Marines Network, Inc., and as it's website Webmaster.  Suspicions began to surface due to his unusual deportment, quite out of the ordinary for a Sergeant Major of Marines.

Larry Gugle has been positively identified as fraudulently presenting himself as a retired Sergeant Major of Marines, with 30 years service to our beloved Corps.  He was neither a Sergeant Major or had he completed 30 years of service.  He has fraudulently presented himself as the recipient of the following decorations and campaign medals/ribbons:  Silver Star; Bronze Star w/V; Purple Heart w/1gold*; Combat Action Ribbon w/Gold*; PUC w/2*; Navy Unit Citation; Navy Meritorious Unit Citation w/2*; Vietnam Service Medal w/2silver* (10 campaigns); Southwest Asia Service Medal; RVN Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation w/Palm; RVN Meritorious Unit Citation w/Palm; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Liberation of Kuwait (Kuwait) Medal; Liberation of Kuwait (Saudi Arabia) Medal.

Records received from and discussed with the NPRC - National Personnel Records Center, St. Louis, MO confirm without reservation that Larry E. Gugle is not entitled to any of the above.  Those initial NPRC records of Gugle's SRB are in your possession.

Larry E. Gugle was presented with doubts that he had ever served with the famed First Battalion, Ninth Marines ("The Walking Dead") and was requested to present authentic documentation to prove his service, to include assignment to 1/9, evidence of Vietnam service, evidence of service decorations and awards.  He submitted documents fulfilling that request.  Those documents were copied and forwarded to both the NPRC and HQMC for review for accuracy.  It was determined that those documents submitted by Larry E. Gugle were inaccurate and altered and some were outright forgeries.

I will forward to you copies of those altered documents.  You have our full permission to post any and all of those phony documents you find of interest in exposing this despicable wannabe. I will send these docs in series of e-mails to follow.

Keep up the good work you do in honoring our true veterans.  The epidemic across this nation can only be stopped by the honorable work of persons like yourselves.

Additional altered/forged documents submitted to 1/9 Network, Inc. Membership Special Investigation Team by Larry E. Gugle are attached.

These documents are not substantiated by official Marine Corps records as held at NPRC.

LARRY E. GUGLE (front center) wearing all the war hero crap that he does not rate. This was a wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown, Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

Larry E. Gugle even went so far as to alter a page of a command chronology showing when he reported (bogus) to 1/9 in Vietnam.  Looked fairly authentic unless one zooms in on the letter "O" on the lines above and below Gugle's entry.  The letters "O" do not match up in shape or size.

No doubt he had access to a 1/9 command chronology, some whiteout and a typewriter. (attachment below is Word Doc format, zoom in 200% and 500% and view the letter in question).  All typewriters of the same make and font DO NOT print identical by any means.  This entry is a forgery.

Also supporting this conclusion is the fact that Larry E. Gugle's name does not appear on the authentic HQMC Microfiche unit rosters for 1/9 for any month between 1967-1969.

<<<<<<<      OBSERVATIONS:

 1.    Note the differences in the samples taken from the document supplied.  Especially note the letter “O” in the word “TO” for miscellaneous sample entries, and that of Gugle.

 2.     Note the dropping and diagonally slanted letter “S”.

3.     Different letter heights suggest the possibility that several different typewriters were utilized in recording the diary entries.

4.     SRB pages from NPRC do not correspond with the unit diary page supplied by Larry Gugle with regards to his date of joining 1/9/3.

5.     Larry E. Gugle did not enter military service until 690702, a fact based on authentic and official records supplied by the NPRC.

   CONCLUSION:

 A.         I conclude that the unit diary page has been altered in that Larry E. Gugle was not in military service on the date posted, an authenticated fact.

B.         I would not give accreditation to any document unless supplied to this investigation team directly from a representative of the official HQMC archives or the NPRC

C.  Larry E. Gugle has the technical knowledge to alter any written document through the use of Xerox copiers and computer editing software.

The fact that he got away with wearing ribbons he was not entitled to, even as a D.I. in 1971-1974, obviously encouraged him to continue the practice.  I have little doubt that he showed up at every new command assignment bedecked as the reincarnation of Audie Murphy, and got away with the charades all the way up to and with a promotion to 1stSgt.  When he got busted back down, it was noted that "he didn't have a clue that he had done anything wrong".

...  misfortune to have the Fraudulent SGM  show up here at one of our meetings and at the VVA Chapter #172. He is still portraying himself as a Retired Marine Sgt Maj and a former member of the 1/9th Marines.
I am pleased to inform you that  that he is now on Administrative leave from the ATK plant in nearby Rocket center WV. He ran his mouth too much and some wised up.  His status with ATK is uncertain right now.
He also claims that he was an AZ State Trooper that was promoted to SGT in Just one year(?). He left this job after the Shot a perp  (his words, not mine) outside of Phoenix.
I do not know how he was able to get away with this but he also has a Silver Star License Plate from TN.

BUYER BEWARE!
Part of this book is false where it purports to be true!
Certain portions of the book (The Poetry) is clearly labeled (in the foreword and in the Author’s Notes) “fact based fiction” and I make no apology for that. However, the last chapter “A Marine’s Marine” which is supposed to be the Biography of a person I knew as “Sergeant Major Larry E. Gugle, USMC, Retired” is simply a lie!
Gugle, until recently, was Vice President of the 1/9 Network Association and a lot of us were fooled into believing he was a Vietnam Veteran with an impressive record. NOT TRUE! Gugle lied to me and I to my readers.
I will re-issue the book with apologies and corrections and, if anyone attempts to buy it in the meantime -- I will be certain they have seen this cautionary note before any money changes hands. More info at the new site dedicated to this fraud:

Joseph,
I'm the Web Master for the 1/9 Network. On our guest book there, a recent post came in from a couple that are with Ham Radio groups alerted us to the fact that Gugle is back at it. E-9 strips, Silver Star License plate and his car is still loaded with all those magnetic signs calling out Wannabe's!! This guy just does not get it. I know him well and his wife. IN fact, it was his wife that rolled him over to us as we all sat in my kitchen on day back in 2001. She told me, another 1/9 Marine, and my wife that he has never served in Vietnam or the gulf war. Claimed he was an E-7 when discharged. I sent the info to one of our investigators to check him out. Originally no one believed it since Gugle was the Vice President of our Network INC.
It never ceases to amaze me how far some of these clown will go.
However, I would never ever suggest that even 1% of the men on Comp with the VA are phonies. It is just too difficult to fake yourself that long...eventually it catches you.
Gugle did have to pay back the VA comp he took and the FBI did not prosecute him, instead as you say he was ordered to turn in all this stuff to them. NOW he is back at it again.
As a side note, his wife was visiting us to visit her son in a North Carolina prison...he sits on death row for stabbing a man 37 times in the back. Larry Gugle did not come with her to NC, but rather stayed in Jackson Tenn.

E5 GUGLE LARRY E entered the USMC 30 June 1969.  MOS:  2831 which was Microwave Equipment Technician.  It does not appear that he served in Vietnam.

While he was at  Wpns Trng Bn at Edson range in Camp Pendleton  he was exposed for wearing unauthorized ribbons and received a court martial. He was  busted to Gunny as a result. He left Edson range shortly after that and received orders back to his MOS somewhere in 22 area of Camp Pendleton.

"The fact that he got away with wearing ribbons he was not entitled to, even as a D.I. in 1971-1974, obviously encouraged him to continue the practice.  I have little doubt that he showed up at every new command assignment bedecked as the reincarnation of Audie Murphy, and got away with the charades all the way up to and with a promotion to 1stSgt.  When he got busted back down, it was noted that "he didn't have a clue that he had done anything wrong"."

Just wanted everyone to know of Larrys where abouts these days. My wife is former mititary "Air Force" and I am writing this in her behalf. She owns a home in a small town in WV. and thats where we first met Larry Gugle through our real estate agent. We was doing a rent to own and was told by our agent that a guy and his wife was coming in to the area from Tennesse to work at ATK who contracts for Allegany Balistics Lab {ABL} in Rocket Center West Virginia. We had been told that ABL had set him up in a hotel till he found a place to live. We met Gugle and his wife and the agents at the home and we couldnt believe this guys car, I thought he was a recruiture at first. They took the house and signed a lease contract for a year or till he got a loan to buy. A month went by and we got a call from our agent saying Gugles job was being transfered to Georgia and he would be leaving and he wanted his none refundable security deposit back and then some on top of that due to the work he had done on the house. There was no work actually done ,he tore the good carpet up, redone the hardwood floors with out asking or getting an ok from the owner and we found out the ABL had fired him for unkown reasons. In the mean time before all this come down my wifes uncle who is a real marine did some back ground on him since he showed up at one of his Marine Corp meeting in Cumberland Md. We followed her uncles advise and we Googled the Gugle and couldnt believe what we was seeing about this guy. My first impression was he was a fanatic but there was something about him that told me he might be phycotic. They leave tomorrow morning with thier packed moving van and he said they was going to Georgia but I heard he told another party he was heading back to Tennesse. It looks like ABL did us a favor and we got out of that not a minute to soon. It would have been bad if he would have stayed.

The Gugle mobile has left West Virginia. He didnt even have the courtesy to flush the toilet before he left and he must have liked the shower head we had in the daughters bathroom because he took it with him. What a piece of work. We are just glad he is gone. We understand the real marines in this area put the run on his wannabe *** too. They didnt want him coming back to any of their meetings. They did a little back ground on him also and found out he was a fraud. I hope he gets what is coming to him.
