Subject: Stolen Valor - Poster Boy Frank Reyes
Date:    Sat, 11 Nov 2006 22:12:35 -0700

I almost feel like a real heel passing this one on to you. As you read the information below, you’ll see that Frank Reyes is nearly a “poster boy” for the wannabe heroes. Don Bendell (former SF Captain in Vietnam) sent me the email and photo (above) this evening. His email was actually sent to a group, including several other SF people, in an effort to check out Frank Reyes.

The whole situation began today when Mr. Reyes sent an email to Don and several other veterans that read:

  Hey All,

I want to take this opportunity to wish all that served a very Happy Veterans day. As you can see , I wear my old Fatigue shirt and my Green Beret with pride that no one can understand , unless you were there. I show my Service Medals that even the President of the US and the VA Administrator,

Mr. Nickleson had request that  ALL veterans wear and show the Medals with Pride. Please join me and wishing all Combat Veterans a great Holiday that was created just for those of us that served our beloved United States of America.

May God Bless the US and Those who gave All.

 Respectfully

Frank Reyes SSG. E-6 Ret.
Vietnam Veteran
1969/1973

The picture shown here is one of four Frank sent (I’ve cropped and resampled for this email to cut down the size, but I have much larger, hi-res copies. Also, FYI, Frank’s paralysis is NOT a result of any combat action. I believe, though am not certain, that he was in a vehicle accident subsequent to his service in Vietnam.)

In addition to the Green Beret (improperly worn with the flash on the wrong side), and the Special Forces patch on his shoulder, the display of awards Mr. Reyes indicates are his “Service Medals” are from left to right (top row only—that’s enough!!!) Distinguished Service Cross, Army Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star (ribbon shows a cluster indicating two awards of the Silver Star), Legion of Merit, Prisoner of War Medal, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and Army Commendation Medal.

Mr. Reyes is in fact, entitled to ONLY the Good Conduct of the aforementioned awards. He is NOT entitled to the Special Forces patch or beret, CIB, or Jump Wings. He was NEVER a Prisoner of War. Mr. Reyes’ records, obtained by Mary Schantag last Spring under an FOIA, are attached and prove this. Furthermore, though Mr. Reyes claims to have been a Staff Sergeant (E-6), his records reflect his highest rank was Specialist Fourth Class (E-4).

Don forwarded this photograph to the aforementioned group with the following:

SSG Frank Reyes, 5thSFGA, 1st Cav, Claims DSC, SS, BS, PH, you name it as you can see. Real or Memorex? Also claims MAC-V/SOG. He is wearing his flash on the wrong side of his Green Beret and has the beret folded on the wrong side of his head. Not cool.

Blessings,
Don Bendell

Obviously, though Don was suspicious (Reyes would be one of the most decorated Green Berets of the Vietnam War, holding every award but the Medal of Honor), Don was seeking confirmation from the SF community in case someone out there knew him.

AND NOW…As they say, for the rest of the story.

In fact, someone on Don’s email cc: list did know Frank Reyes, but it was not a member of the SF community. As a combat engineer, I served with Frank Reyes at LZ Nancy, not as SF but as members of Company C, 14th Combat Engineer Battalion.

Several years ago Frank began searching for men he had served with at LZ Nancy, and had eventually located several who began sharing emails and  communicating from time to time. About six years ago Frank located me, and I was welcomed into the group, which included nearly a dozen of us from that unit during the same time frame. It was an exciting thing for me, to at last come in contact with former comrades. Frank even sent me a CD/ROM with a number of pictures from those days—a welcomed gift I greatly appreciated as I had lost almost all my own photos from the period.

As the emails went back and forth among us, Frank told repeated stories of serving with the Army Rangers and Special Forces after leaving LZ Nancy, stories I found quite suspect but preferred not to look into—after all, Frank was a friend with whom I had served in Vietnam. About a year ago Frank sent out a picture of the same medals frame shown above, but it was simply a picture of the frame. I was bothered somewhat, as it seemed obvious Frank was trying to give everyone the impression they were HIS medals, when I knew he did not at least earn a DSC. But since he hadn’t flagrantly come out and said they were his, or hadn’t WORN the medals, again I preferred to “see no evil”. Inside I felt like a hypocrite for NOT confronting Frank, but those feelings were conflicting with my personal loyalty to a man with whom I had served in Vietnam.

Last spring the media printed several stories of medals fraud I was involved in exposing around the country, stories about our efforts to pass the Stolen Valor Act, and even appearances on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and a couple on FOX news. One of the guys in our group emailed me to congratulate me, and closed by saying, “You know, we have one of those (frauds) in our group.”

At that time I realized just how negligent I had been. As a result, on June 9 I sent Frank the following email:

Frank,

The subject of your units and awards has come under question. Would you be so kind as to forward to me a copy of your DD-214 so I can answer any questions regarding what units you served with and what medals you were awarded. I do recall an email last year in which you sent a picture of a display including the DSC, Silver Star, and others. I trust you are not claiming that this represents your awards.

Thanks, Doug

Almost immediately Frank responded as follows:

Dear Mr. Sterner, (Previously he had always addressed me as Doug or my RVN nickname “Gopher”)

In questioning my honesty, truth be told, You do not have that right. I do not recall asking you to look into my passed. It is just that, MY pass not yours. What and Who I served with is in all honesty again, NONE of your business. I do not recall sending you anything regarding permission or information dealing with my Military pass. I do understand that you wish to make a  name for yourself in Politics, But going about using and abusing friends is not the way. As far as me sending you personal information such as my DD-214, That is not going to happen in my life time. Do as I do, delete me from your e-mail list please. I do not wish to associate myself with people such as your self who question ones honesty and integrity. I never asked you of your passed because of one good reason Sir, It was then as it is now, None of my business. I would suggest that you do the same Sir. In all honesty don't use me to gain political clout for your own personal use. We our No longer friends,  delete my name from your e-mail list.

Respectfully

Frank Reyes

In fact, all but one of my comrades became immediately incensed that I would confront Frank, one of whom was a former platoon sergeant I knew well who emailed me to say:

Why are you sending this to me Dont bother Frank with this at this time as hes having a hard time right now in plan english mind your own bis. I am removing you from my email list I dont want to ever hear from you again you messing with Frank is worst then messing with my Family ive seen the orders for what frank is showing hes earned every thing there

shirley

The fallout from my comrades was generally of the same tone, only one emailed to tell me he was behind me. Some made very heated phone calls to give me vivid pieces of their mind. I explained to all of them that if they REALLY cared about Frank, they would confront him about this fraud. I pointed out that while what Frank had been doing was VERY WRONG, that I had no evidence that he had ever WORN these medals, and thus had not violated any laws. I advised that if Frank wasn’t confronted, and forced to deal with this, sooner or later he would probably cross that line—that what I was doing wasn’t vengeful despite the fact it looked like I was turning on a comrade—I was actually trying to protect him from himself.

In response to Shirley’s email, in which he stated he had seen the orders for all of Frank’s awards, I learned that Mary Schantag of the POW NETWORK had already FOIAd Frank based upon a report, and emailed to Shirley the same documents attached. Shirley called me in a huff, advised that anyone who served in Vietnam had medals that weren’t on their orders, and that I should NEVER contact him by email or phone again.

Subsequent to all of the above, all of which transpired over a two day period in June, all contact from my former comrades (with the exception of one) was stopped. It hurt, but I knew I had done the right thing and as I’ve always done, moved on with my life. I did entertain hopes that Frank would be shaken enough by my confrontation to end the charade before it could take him any deeper into trouble. As the email from Don Bendell today demonstrates, this was not the case.

I leave it to you to decide if you want to pursue this. After receiving Don’s email I forwarded the photo and fact that the SF guys were about to go after Frank to Frank himself and the members of our group with which I corresponded regularly until last June. I say this so you will  know that Frank knows he has been exposed—AGAIN. I know you would like to interview someone BEFORE they know they’ve been outed, but I just couldn’t do that to a former comrade. It would be like blind-siding him. But I will not cover for him—he is among the worst Stolen Valor cases I’ve dealt with. Frankly, he didn’t stop when I confronted him in June, and I doubt he will change his practice even after I emailed to confront him again today. Perhaps he has told these lies so long, he now honestly believes them. At any rate, I have passed this on to you to decide if you want to follow up.

Sincerely,

Doug

Dear Frank;

You, know maybe it is because it is this week, but I am not a very happy camper right now. With some others, I just helped to “out” Bob Levy, the Mayor of Atlantic City, NJ for posing as a Green Beret Vietnam war hero, when he was; just like you, a Vietnam veteran who should have been simply proud of his service. Instead, you disrespected my friend, Sgt Nick, who referred you to me, and tried to steal the honor of every other Vietnam veteran who actually DID earn the myriad of medals you claim. I cannot believe you would be so damned stupid as to send photos of yourself to me, a real Green Beret, and you wear a Green Beret, which you have never earned, with both the flash and the fold of the beret on the wrong side of your head. Nobody in SF would ever screw up that badly.

You never went to Jump School , you phony lying piece of crap, and display a Master Parachutist badge. You were a Spec 4 in Vietnam, and claimed to be a Green Beret staff sergeant, which my son really is who just returned from Iraq. You were an engineer with the Cav, yet you display not only the jump wings and CIB, but the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, not 1 but 2 Silver Stars, a POW medal, Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars, ad infinitum. You try to portray yourself as a wheelchair-bound vet when your paralysis actually came from a car wreck, not Vietnam . My step-brother lost his leg to “real” bullets with the 1st Cavalry Division you phony, dishonorable piece of scum. You were discharged as an E4 on my birthday January 8 in 1973 with a National Defense medal, Good Conduct Medal, and your Vietnam “breather” ribbons, with both your legs working, and that’s it, and you have the gall to write me and insult me even more on Veterans Day. You threw away your right to be even thanked as a veteran when you tossed your honor down the drain to pose as something you are not. I pray to God you do not have children and grand-children, because you are passing on a legacy of dishonor and deceit to them, if you do. Sometimes, all we have to leave our children is our good name and our honor. Look what you leave your offspring, lies and stolen valor. You titled your message “A Proud Vietnam veteran?” Talk about gall!

We who are in, or were in, Special Forces are sick and tired of phonies like you, who never even had the balls to jump out of a plane and earn Jump Wings much less go through all the hell that we did, and my sons did, to be the only 3 out of every 100 who try, who actually earn the Green Beret. You were already exposed last year as a phony by the POW Network and are listed as a phony on their site http://www.pownetwork.org/phonies/phonies240.htm , yet you still send pictures of your self trying to look like a wheelchair-bound Audie Murphy and still try to blow smoke up people’s asses, and convince them they are sitting on chimneys. I also found out that my friend Doug Sterner served with you in the Cav, and when he exposed your deceit last year before some other vet friends, they didn’t have the balls to stand behind Doug, so that makes them accomplices when somebody tries to steal the honor of others as far as we all are all concerned. When I say “we,” I am speaking for the myriad of real Green Berets who are BCCed on this email, a list which reads like a WHO’s WHO of the US ARMY SPECIAL FORCES including “REAL” Medal of Honor and DSC recipients.

I told the Mayor of Atlantic City , several times, before he apologized to the men of Special Forces on Friday, that he WOULD apologize to all of us, and he did. He had no choice. Why anybody would be dumb enough to pick Green Berets to disrespect is beyond me! It is incomprehensible. You would be 10 times smarter to disrespect the Crips, Bloods, or MS13 gang. My gang wears Olive Drab and our headgear is forest green, and it is the most-elite, most-dangerous, highest-trained, baddest gang in the history of the world, and you try to claim you are one of us when you have not earned the right? Real genius, Frank . . .not.
You tried to portray yourself as a member of MAC-V/SOG, Special Forces, a recipient of the DSC, the nation’s second-highest award for valor and just about every medal the army has. A POW MEDAL????? In my opinion, you have got to be either on drugs, mentally ill, or just plain stupid. But, you were warned by Doug Sterner a year ago, trying to keep you out of trouble, but now you have stepped on it with track shoes, pal. You just had to keep up the fraud, and besides the SF personnel I mentioned BCCed herein and men who disrespected Doug Sterner before you had lied to them so convincingly, but this has also gone to the FBI for fraud investigation.

It is so sad that someone who actually served in Vietnam could not simply just be proud of that. That was honorable, but you have disgraced yourself, the men of your unit, the army, and other Vietnam veterans with your outrageous dishonesty. Why did you get so greedy? And why in God’s name would you be dumb enough to try to send photographs of yourself trying to come off as something you’re not, to the people you are posing as, and who actually walk the walk? You owe a public apology to my friend Nick Don ovito, the men, and past and present of the US Army Special Forces. That would be the first intelligent thing you can do. Do not insult me further with any of the common bullshit lines like your records are sealed in a Top Secret vault or any of the other crap phonies try. You have disgraced yourself and your family and need to stand up (not literally), grow some balls, and be a man. I am sure you acted like one when you went to Vietnam , but somewhere along the way, forgot what it takes to be a man. I have attached your phony photos so real vet heroes can have a good laugh. By the way, you were not even smart enough to put your supposed staff sergeant stripes on your jungle fatigues. Also, do not even try the BS line you did with Doug last year saying it is not my business. It most certainly is, when you try to steal the honor and valor of others, and I am one of them.

We will not have this discussion again, period.

Reyes, I don't even wish to convey that I respect you in any way so I don't think you deserve the title of Mr. Reyes you piece of sorry phony shit. Your title is "FUCKING WANNABE REYES"

You should have that beret off your head and slap you silly with it even if you are in a wheelchair. You are not, never was SF and you sure as hell never served in MACVSOG, those medals/awards you must have bought in the PX cause you sure as hell are not authorized them.

You are not listed in Who's Who from MACVSOG, you are not listed as having been awarded the DSC and you are not listed as a POW or anything else.

I have just added your sorry ass to the MACVSOG phony list in addition to you having already been added to another wannabe list. I think the next veterans day a few of us real SF'er should travel to your home town and when we see you with the beret and SF patch, take appropriate action to point you out to the crown that you are a real super wannabe fuck head.

Look for us one day, one of us might just pop up and slap you silly with that beret, you just piss me off the the max. WHY THE FUCK CAN'T YOU BE WHAT YOU ARE. YOU ARE AN EMBARRASSMENT TO US ALL..

Not only have I added you to our website, I have forwarded this email and Don 's to many other SOGGERS AND SF'ers who may not be so nice as we are, you fxxx head.
