To Whom It May Concern,

Erik Sturchio has been reported to the Montana Board of Medical Examiners for impersonating a physician. I have no knowledge of Mr Sturchio actually caring for a patient but the governing body for physicians in Montana have been given the heads up about his fraudulent activity.

He has stated on several online forums frequented by Army veterans that he bought his diplomas but here he is advertised as a surgeon.

Here he has a PhD and an MD.

Here are some examples of the dire consequences that can occur when physician posers go undetected.

Impersonating a doctor is a federal offense and, for health care providers, a mandatory reportable offense in every state. Sometimes physician posers get away with posing for a good long while without raising any suspicions from their colleagues or patients. Physician posers are prosecuted every year in this country thanks to the work of officials within the state medical governing bodies, the FBI and the DEA.

Feel free to use this information as your POW network sees fit.  Thank you for your concern in upholding the good name of our honorable servicemembers  and exposing phonies for what they truly are.

Dear POW Network,

Please pass this along ....

I greatly appreciate your interest in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams, and your search for the TRUTH. Before answering your questions I must make clear that I am a private individual, not affiliated with the US Dept. of Defense any government organization. Additionally, although I worked for/with the AuthentiSEAL organization for several years as an Investigator (and later as a Special Investigator dealing with the media), I am no longer affiliated with that group. That said, I assure you that my copy of the SEAL database is current and complete to the present date.

Although I looked closely at an enlarged copy of the photograph of Mr. ERIC STURCHIO, I was unable to clearly see either a SEAL Trident or the associated Navy/Marine Corps Parachute Wings. All SEALs are required to earn the “gold” Navy/Marine jump wings (minimum 10 jumps), whether or not they have already earned the Army parachute wings (5 jumps required). However, Mr. STURCHIO may actually be wearing undersized versions of those insignias which I am not seeing clearly in the photograph, or they may be partially obscured beneath the lapel of his jacket. I do NOT find a listing in the SEAL database of successful graduates for anyone named ERIC STURCHIO. I have also looked for possible alternate spellings, and names with similar pronunciations, but found none. There are a total of 10,000+ SEALs, but absolutely none have the last name STURCHIO or any variant thereof.

Unless he has undertaken the unlikely action of a legal name change since his claimed attendance at BUD/S training, I can state conclusively that ERIC STURCHIO has NEVER COMPLETED SEAL training, and he is not now, nor was he ever a Navy SEAL.

When members of the Naval Special Warfare community meet others who claim similar service, but whom they do not recognize, there is a conversational exchange of information that establishes the bona fides of each to the other. There is no set formula for this exchange, nor for the information that is exchanged, but it ALWAYS takes place, and the REAL Naval Special Warfare members can ALWAYS spot a phony as a result of this exchange. I might suggest that anyone wishing to challenge Mr. STURCHIO’s claims need ask only three questions:

 (1) What was his BUD/S class number?

(2) Where did his training take place?

(3) When did he graduate from Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training?

There are many other questions which could be asked to further establish the level of veracity or untruth regarding his claims, but those three questions are absolutes; the answers are totally UNCLASSIFIED, and every real SEAL will gladly provide that substantiating information upon request.

It is quite common for those making fraudulent SEAL claims to cite a “secret” training class, “special selection and skills which allowed them to bypass BUD/S training”, or “secret missions” as an explanation for the lack of military documentation to back up their stories. They also tend to claim their military records are “sealed” and cannot be accessed. I would caution you that despite anything the man might have said, there are NO secret SEALs. Before any classified operations may be undertaken, a man must first successfully complete the totally unclassified BUD/S Training program. No one gets to the SEAL Teams without completing this training; there are NO EXCEPTIONS! The graduates of that training program are listed in the SEAL database – an unclassified document which is nonetheless considered “highly sensitive” and therefore not available for general public circulation. There have been and will continue to be secret missions, but there are NO secret SEALs… we know them all.

Sadly Mr. STURCHIO’s false claims of being a SEAL are far from unusual. Close examination of statistics during several years of work with the AuthentiSEALs has led me to estimate that there may be as many as 300 (or more!) imposters for every real SEAL. Much as we might desire to aggressively confront such posers, the ability of the real SEALs (active or retired) to respond in any way to these phonies is severely limited by civil laws. The primary method for curbing such disreputable and insulting conduct is public exposure – informing members of the public (like yourself) of the truth regarding false claims. If you wish to pursue this matter further, you might consider pursuing your own “public exposure” options by contacting representatives of the print or broadcast media. Most news organizations are generally eager to learn about such story ideas… especially in our modern culture that holds our military in such high esteem.

Mr. STURCHIO’s claims of serving in any capacity with the US Navy may be very easily verified. This may be accomplished by filing a Standard Form 180 (SF-180) with the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis , Missouri . The form is available online for download, and does not require Mr. STURCHIO’s signature for you to receive the desired information. To obtain this information without his signature, the form must be submitted under the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) by including the phrase “This form is being submitted under the FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT” in the ‘Comments’ section of the form. Although the government formally states that this process takes 90 days, the current turnaround time for such inquiries is actually only about 40-60 days. The information which the NPRC returns will include specifics about what military schools were successfully completed, and what military units a person was attached to. It will also list Naval Enlisted Classification (NEC) codes clearly indicating training and skill qualifications. There are only a handful of very special numerical designators for those who carry Naval Special Warfare qualifications.

Allow me to thank you again ...  for your concern and for your assistance in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams… and to thank you for your own military service to our nation!

Very respectfully,

Steve Robinson
