MICHAEL C. BRAMLETT
SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI

"A convicted felon, arrested on 11 Jan 06 in Christian County, MO, on warrant for parole violation.  For at least four months in 2004, met with veteran groups in Springfield, MO, and applied for membership in Marine Corps League and managed to be accepted for membership in MOAA (which is made up of retired officers.)  A skilled, articulate con man, his story varied from having been wounded in Afghanistan, to-later-surviving an IED attack on his HummV in Iraq, where despite critical wounding to abdominal area, he dragged two enlisted Marines from destroyed vehicle, before passing out from blood loss.  Claimed initially Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.  Attended a session of the National Convention of the Military Order Of The Purple Heart in August, where he first submitted an application for membership, then withdrew it quickly.  Claimed degrees from Tulane and Vanderbilt (PhD in physics), and displayed very good approximation of the degree from Vanderbilt in his apartment.  Appeared in uniform of Marine Captain, spoke appropriately of background of Reserve Commission, and the call to active duty, and symptoms of PTSD.  When he attended the funeral of a U.S. Marine at the National Cemetery in Springfield, he was in full uniform (complete with sword), but had added a Navy Cross to his collection of medals.  An alert marine veteran took a picture, passed the photo to a web site open to Marines, leading to calls to the POW Network, and the initial involvement of the FBI.  He will be housed in the Webster County jail in Marshfield, MO under several warrants.  He made a full confession to a Special Agent of the FBI that his only military service was three months in the Navy. Impersonating Marine leads to prison

Amos Bridges
News-Leader

A Springfield man who impersonated a decorated Marine — among other things — will spend six months in federal prison for the deception.

Michael Paul Bramlett, 34, was sentenced Tuesday in Springfield on one count of wearing a U.S. Marine Corps uniform without authorization and another for illegally wearing medals, badges and ribbons of the armed forces.

Bramlett, who in the past has claimed to be an attorney, psychologist and London-trained chef, served part of a five-year state sentence for selling illegal prescription drugs to an undercover officer in Webster County in 2003.

He had been free on parole since October but will now head to federal prison after receiving a six-month sentence on each count — the statutory maximum — to be served concurrently.

"This imposter received the maximum penalty for his dishonorable conduct," said a press release issued by Bradley Schlozman, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri. "Such disrespect for the brave men and women serving in our nation's armed forces won't be tolerated."

Bramlett pleaded guilty to the charges Dec. 22. Although he served in the Navy for three months in 1989, he never served in the Marines as he claimed while attending several Marine Corps League functions in December 2005.

After applying to become a member of the organization for former Marines, Bramlett attended several of the group's functions. He claimed to have been wounded by an IED while serving in Iraq and arrived at the League's annual dinner dressed as a Marine captain with service ribbons that included a Silver Star, Navy Cross and Purple Heart.

League members were immediately suspicious, Commandant Frank Atkinson said in a past interview with the News-Leader.

"I questioned it, because he didn't have any combat action ribbons," Atkinson said after charges were filed in October. "It just didn't jibe, so everyone started asking questions."

When Bramlett attended a funeral service a few days later wearing his uniform and sword, League members had all the proof they needed — and documented the deception in photographs.

"He was carrying his sword on his right hip," Atkinson said. "Well, the sword's carried on the left, so that's kind of a dead giveaway."

Life of lies

Bramlett, who is listed in state prison records with his last name spelled "Bramlet" and at times used the alias Michael Ross, has amassed a collection of false identities since moving to the Ozarks from Mississippi about 10 years ago.

His Marine disguise dates to before his relocation — a 1997 photo on the Mississippi State University Web site pictures Bramlett in uniform advertising a Toys for Tots drive. The cutline identifies him as a sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserve.

By November 1998 Bramlett was living in Springfield, where he was charged with four counts of false impersonation, a misdemeanor, for claiming to be a licensed attorney.

A review of law enforcement records shows other charges: a 2001 plea of guilty to driving while intoxicated and the 2003 sentence for selling Oxycontin to an undercover cop in Marshfield.

An investigation in Republic in December revealed another occupation Bramlett claimed — doctor of psychology. No charges were filed in the case, but police records show Bramlett admitted to telling a woman he worked at Cox hospital as a psychologist. Police seized a business card Bramlett allegedly possessed identifying him as a doctor and member of the "American Physical Society."

In 2001, Bramlett was mentioned in a News-Leader story about the opening of the Highlander steakhouse on South Glenstone Avenue. In the article, restaurant owner Bill Murdock described his young chef, Michael Bramlett, as being "trained at the Cordon Bleu in London and ... apprenticed to a chef in Paris."

Emily Ross said that was one of the more common — and false — qualifications her ex-husband claimed.

"He's told everybody that, and it's complete crap," said Ross, who divorced Bramlett in February after a year and a half of marriage. "He can't cook anything."

When they met in the spring of 2005, Bramlett told her he worked at Baker Observatory near Marshfield, Ross said. He spun the familiar yarn about being a wounded Iraq war veteran.

"He lied to everybody in my family," said Ross, who never met any of Bramlett's relatives. "He told me they were Jewish and wouldn't like me because I wasn't."

Ross said the stories grew more complex and outlandish. Even when caught in a lie, Bramlett attempted to spin another.

"He started coming up with these stories about how he had something that the government wanted and they were trying to get him to turn it over — real 'Days of Our Lives' kind of stuff," she said.

She said she's accepted that she may never know the truth, but warned others of falling for a similar set-up.

"You just don't expect someone to lie to you about everything — everything — in their life," she said. "At least I didn't. It's not like I had money or anything. I didn't see a reason for him to lie. I didn't have anything worth stealing."

Springfield man charged with impersonating a Marine
10/14/2006

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A Springfield man accused of illegally wearing a U.S. Marine Corps uniform and medals conducted himself in an "unconscionable" manner, a federal prosecutor said.

Michael Paul Bramlett, 34, made his initial appearance in U.S. District Court on Friday. He was indicted June 23 on two misdemeanor counts and faces up to one year in prison without parole and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted.

"Particularly at a time when America's brave men and women in uniform are putting their very lives on the line in defense of freedom and democracy overseas ... (Bramlett's) actions, which have brought dishonor to himself, are an affront to the courageous soldiers who don the uniform every day," U.S. Attorney Bradley Schlozman said in a statement.

Bramlett served in the Navy for three months in 1989 but never served in the Marines.

But prosecutors allege he appeared publicly last December wearing a Marine Corps uniform as well as decorations, medals, badges and ribbons of the armed forces without authorization.

Frank Atkinson, who served in the Navy and was attached to a Marine unit during Vietnam, said Bramlett wore the uniform and decorations at several Marine Corps League events during that time.

"Originally he came in to the installation dinner that we had about year ago, and he showed up wearing dress blues as a Marine Corps captain," Atkinson said. "He was wearing ribbons and everything like that."

He said Bramlett wore a Silver Star and several Purple Hearts and told of being wounded in Iraq by an improvised explosive device.

"I questioned it, because he didn't have any combat action ribbons," Atkinson said. "It just didn't jive, so everyone started asking questions."

Atkinson said the "dead giveaway" was when Bramlett arrived at a funeral service a few days later in full uniform with his sword on the wrong side.

Members of the Marine Corps League took pictures and forwarded the information to the FBI office in Springfield.

For the first time, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's annual Toys for Tots Program is being held at Mississippi State. Now in its 50th year, the program collects and redistributes Christmas toys for children who might not be receiving any. Recently, Sgt. Michael Bramlett of Oxford (l) and Sha Platt of Tupelo joined Student Association President Mike Richardson in announcing the placement of collection boxes at the S.A. office, Colvard Union and numerous other locations. Bramlett, an MSU student and USMC Reserve member, is heading the campus drive; Platt is the program's regional coordinator. For more information, telephone Bramlett at 338-4976.

Subject: VERIFICATION OF MICHAEL BRAMLETT

Hello,
I have checked the student record system for:
MR. MICHAEL PAUL BRAMLETT and he could not be found. I tried all the different social security numbers and they came up invalid.
We have no record of this student at Vanderbilt University.

Shelley Meadows
Vanderbilt University
Michael,

Let me begin by a brief introduction. I am a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. I served proudly as a Non-Commissioned Officer, and received an Honorable Discharge. Additionally, I never served in combat, I was not in any form of "covert, classified, or black operations."

I wish I could explain the profound emotions I am feeling due to your deception. I happen to count some of the people you misrepresented yourself to as my friends. These people are combat veterans, and some are very highly decorated for valor. What constantly amazes me is the fact that they consider me a brother, by virtue of my service. It is a very humbling experience for me, and I am proud to have them include me as "one of the family."

I wish I knew why you chose to perpetrate this lie. No matter how long one serves in the military, that service makes them a part of an elite fraternity. This fraternity is often envied by people who did not serve, due to the camaraderie we display to each other. We share some common experiences no matter which branch of service we called home. Unfortunately, some try to enter the fraternity falsely, and even more distressing are those who try to inflate their standing by falsifying their service.

I wish I could somehow explain the crime (yes, crime!) you have committed. I do not mean the violation of Federal law by wearing medals and ribbons to which you were note entitled, but the crime of betrayal. In the Bible, Christ was betrayed for thirty pieces of silver. You betrayed ALL veterans of ALL times by sacrificing a hallowed concept among veterans...HONOR!

I do not know how to communicate to you the severity of this offense. What hurts me the most is that I have had the opportunity to meet men who had received the Medal of Honor, the Air Force Cross, and other valorous medals. They are the finest and most unassuming people you would ever meet, and you would never know they held these honors. They are the best our Country ever produced.

I am not questioning your love of our Country. But, there comes a time when one must answer for the things they have done. For you, that time has come.

I fully encourage you to confess what you have done, and to TRUTHFULLY AND HUMBLY apologize for your mistakes. One cannot take back the past, but one can atone for their misdeeds. This would demonstrate that you have at least SOME courage and integrity left.

I would sincerely hope that the people you have lied to would simply ignore you if you apologized. However, you will find that you have wounded these people very deeply, as you have also wounded me and all veterans. You have, pure and simply, betrayed all of us, and your actions and words have committed blasphemy against all the TRUE heroes who have died in the service to our Country since its inception! From their graves they call for you to cease and desist in your falsehoods!

I would pray that the spirits of these brave men and women would visit you in your dreams, and that they would show you some compassion. The same compassion you have denied them. I would hope they would show you the true meaning of sacrifice. The sacrifice they made, and which you belittled.

The choice is now yours. I only hope you make use of this opportunity. But please remember, no one did this to you. You did this by your OWN actions.
