It seems strange that you will accept the word of ANYONE that someone has been making false statements. I recently made a idolator mad in the SCA and he vowed that he would get even. He is apparantly doing to by posting facts about me which are totally false. I have made NO claims to POW status since 2003. I have displayed no medals and have made no claims of any sort. This person is doing all they can to discredit me and you take anyone's word with no checking and without giving the accued a chance to answer. I learned my lesson. I keep quiet about that entire subject now and the claim that I told ANYONE that i learned self-defense in the Rangers is TOTALLY false. I am not the smartest person there is, but i am not totally stupid either and to make such a claim in recent tines would only cause me more problems so I do not do that. Pleae check on why the person would post an entire page about me and lie in it to boot. They have a personal grudge and since they do not believe in God, theink they have nothing to lose by lying or any other possible means to discredit someone. I apologized and I meant it. I have sone nothing since to make that apology unacceptable and yet i cannot post it on your site. This is TRUTH? This is fairness>
To convict a person without even being able to face their accusers is NOT the American way. The person is convicted before even a hearing on oure heresay and gossiup and LIES.

I made a member of the SCA very mad at me for something totally unrelated to this page or the content. He vowed he wouldget even and apparantly has been doing just that. In over 4 years I have not claimed POW status and never claimed any medals or honors. This person will do all they can to get back at me as they worship a Goddess and not the true God, it means nothing to them to lie. I have dropped all affilations with any Veterans groups as of the past 4 years and hoped to have a clean start in Shawnee until this person vowed to get back at me because i dared to disagree with them and their pagan religion. If lies are going to be told to tery to make me sound even worse, then I should have the right to answer with the truth. There was no verbage on my part in 2005,2006 or 2007 and no claims of POW status. I am not the smartest person in the world, but i do know enough to shut up and not get myself in any more trouble. I was demonstrating self defense and hor to take a kn!
ife from someone, but NO ONE questioned where I learned it. The person on the smear campaign is ruthgless and wilol stop at nothing to try to get me in more touble which i have no intention of allowing or doing. The ONLY organizations i belong to now are the SCA, and the Kiwanis Club, neither of which are military related. I may be dumb, but not totally stupid and will not do anything else to get myself in hot water. I am surprised the you will take anyone's word for something without checking or giving the person accused the chance to repond when you say you only seek the truth.

07/2005 UPDATE:

Corley never signed an F180.

FOIA filed - St. Louis found NO records when provided with full name, date of birth and social security number.

Now if Mr. Corley wants to sign that F180, or provide the DD214 with a service number, we'd be glad to do it again.

Recently I was at a SCA event where he was "demonstrating" self defense as taught to him when he was in Special Forces.  When I asked him where he was in SF, he told me that it was still classified and he could not tell me....
Corley is presently living in Shawnee Oklahoma and has been apparently spreading his lies for some time with various groups.  He is also claiming PTSD and says that the VA has refused to treat him for it.

I write to you to share that Mr. Corely is still up to his old tricks just   in a new town. Shortly after he ran away from Okemah, he turned up back here in  Shawnee....

In recent years ( Last 3) Mr. Corley has represented himself still as  a Vietnam Veteran. He has marched in the Local Shawnee Oklahoma Veterans Day  Parade wearing a American Legion Uniform.

He was in fact bragging about being a POW as near as a mere 3 weeks ago. He  was also claming to be an Airborne Ranger.

I may have lied about being a POW, even though I was in enemy hands for a short time, but at least I served. Did you serve two tours of duty in ANY armed conflict? I did. Did you ever kill an enemy of the US...I had over 80 confirmed kills. Those of us who were there had a saying..."Vietnam - If you haven't been there - SHUT THE HELL UP"

Claims POW in Tiger Cage for 18 months and escapee. Claims Airborne, Ranger. St. Louis "lost" records.

American Legion exposed years ago for false claims. "Consummate liar" according to former employer.

Spoke at opening WALL ceremonies. Now claiming you can "see my DD214 in court."

POW phony

The Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall is so renowned that it draws tens of thousands each place it visits to honor those on the wall – those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Unfortunately, the wall is also so renowned that it draws another type of visitor – phonies that prey on the emotions of others.

Among those who visited Sunday’s opening ceremony for the wall in Idabel was a man who wasn’t listed on the program, because organizers didn’t know in advance that he was going to attend.

That man, Dan Corley, told organizers he was a prisoner-of-war during Vietnam – in fact, that he was one of only a handful of Americans who escaped from his captors.

He also told of the horrors of his captors torturing him, of keeping him in a 4-foot by 4-foot tiger cage, of stabbing split bamboo pieces into his skin, then dousing them with diesel and setting them afire.

But is his story true?

“Please do not run a story denoting him as a POW. He is a liar, a fraud, a phony,” say the keepers of a web site that lists biographies of POWS in Vietnam.

The site also has a list of those said to be POW phonies. On that list is the name Dan Corley, but not on the list of real POWs.

Chuck and Mary Schantag, who maintain the site, minced no words when this newspaper, trying to find Corley’s biography, told them of his appearance at the opening ceremony of the moving wall here.

“According to all available records from the U.S. government, posted publicly on the Internet (www.pownetwork.org) and on numerous sites, Mr. Corley was never captured, detained, missing in action for two hours nor any amount of time during the Vietnam War,” they write.

“He wasn’t rescued and did not escape. He was never on covert ops, secret missions, his papers were not burned in St. Louis, his mission wasn’t classified nor did he beg to be kept off the lists for privacy sake. He is not a ‘lost sheep’ nor a member of the group of legitimate returnees. His statements to this effect, since 2000, have disgraced the honor of the many that served, the families that still wait, and those that have returned,” the Schantags write.

But could the couple be mistaken? After getting their e-mailed response, this newspaper then checked U.S. Department of Defense websites, which list all Southeast Asia POWs and MIAs, along with specific details on each.

The Department of Defense even breaks down POWs by state. Corley’s name is not to be found, appearing to bolster the Schantags’ claim.

Further, a crosscheck of the information on the Schantags’ site against information on government websites verifies at least the accuracy of their POW listings.

Later, a spokesman from the Pentagon returned a call, saying the information on the Department of Defense website was accurate.

Corley was at the wall Tuesday morning, talking with those who visited.

Asked about the claims of his being a phony, Corley became livid and threatened litigation.

Corley indicated he was aware of the website listing of POW biographies, but was unaware he was listed on their list of phonies.

He left Tuesday morning after this newspaper asked him about the Schantags’ web site, the Department of Defense information and about the comments made by the newspaper publisher at Okemah.

Corley said his records had been lost in St. Louis, and that it took him over a year to get his DD 214 (military discharge papers). He offered to fax them to this newspaper, but later e-mailed, saying after talking with an attorney, he had changed his mind.

The paper also contacted Corley’s hometown paper at Okemah. Ironically, Corley had actually worked at the paper as a reporter.

Publisher Guy Mason said he was not surprised at this newspaper’s discovery when trying to find a biography on him.

“He was real active in the American Legion here and some of the members got suspicious and ran a check on him,” Mason said.

That’s when Mason said he thought Corley was first exposed as a fraud.

“I guess the guy can’t help it,” he said. “He lies about everything.”

Corley said he did indeed work as a reporter at the Okemah paper. Asked to explain why the publisher there would say such things (he was shown the direct quotes), Corley responded, “He’s a liar.”

Mary Schantag wasn’t bothered by Corley’s litigation threats against either her web site or this newspaper. She said phonies typically respond in this way when confronted with the truth.

Schantag said a suit would allow the opportunity to discover if Corley has received any government money improperly, as they have found to be the case several times with others making false claims about military service.

She said false claims about military records have become a “national epidemic” but she appreciated this newspaper reporting about Corley, because few have the courage to do so, from what she’s seen.

The Baltimore Sun last year reported about the Schantags, Steve Waterman and others on a nationwide mission to expose those who exaggerate or falsely claim military service.

“Every time we expose a new one, it seems like we get reports of two or three more,” says Mary Schantag in the Sun article. The couple have turned up 668 fake POWs since they checked out their first claim in 1998.

For Steve Waterman, a Navy veteran, the exposure of phonies takes on a very personal, emotional tone.

“You read about a guy who dies, someone who was either poisoned by Agent Orange or was an alcoholic,” he says, genuine veterans who never got over their wounds or their nightmares of combat.

“And then this other guy’s out there in a fake uniform parading in front of the (Vietnam Memorial) Wall, and you just want to rip his lungs out.”

Mary Schantag puts it another way.

“They’ll steal the stories (of heroism), but they’re not stealing the nightmares, or stealing the pain.”

The Schantags are reporting Corley’s appearance in Idabel to the president of an organization of returnees, former POW Capt. John Michael McGrath.

This newspaper is e-mailing them photos of Corley’s appearance here.

The Schantags (606-928-3304) wanted to know if Corley had POW plates on his vehicle while in Idabel. They note that such display by non-POWs is a violation of U.S. Title Code 18.

Corley said, however, that he does not display POW plates on his vehicle.

Corley indicated through litigation he would end up owning both this newspaper and the one at Okemah.

“I know my conscious is clear and that I did nothing wrong. It will be interesting to see what changes I make when I own your local newspaper. As for the supposed ‘phonies’ site, I can show you or anyone else my membership in the American Legion that is paid up and in good standing,” he wrote.

Letter to Editor/bruce/misc

To the Editor:

Upon the advice of my attorney I can make the following statement only. I was totally shocked to find that my name did not appear on the POW database. I knew the site existed and had full knowledge that it could easily be checked. I never worried about it because I assumed my name would be there.

As for the mention that Mr. Guy Mason made about my membership in the American Legion, if anyone cares to check with Nicky Lambeth, the adjutant for Post 123 in Okemah, they will find that I resigned from the Legion due to a disagreement with the post commander after an ouster attempt.

As to the other accusations made by Mr. Mason, I have no idea why he said those things and I have addressed a certified letter to him concerning those allegations.

I have turned all my information over to my attorney and he will attempt to get the database cleared up and to stop that spurious web site that supposedly lists me as a phony. My records will be made public, but it will be in a court of law.

Dan Corley

(Editor’s note: Mr. Corley, you might want to check that previous e-mail, the one that said you are a paid-up member in good standing in your American Legion post. We took your suggestion and called Mr. Lambeth. He indicates you haven’t been a member of the post in about two years. See you in court.)

Subject: one last time

Since you refuse to remove my apology after this long posted, do you at least have the guts to print the fact that i have complied with everything i have been asked by you to do and that i and my family have suffered for 2 years over this, If I can avoid legal action I would prefer to since i do not like the ACLU's activities, but you are leaving me no choice. A 2 year apology should be enough, or do you ever take it off your site? I am betting that you will not print this on your site because to do so would be an admission of pure vengance and not exposing someone. Every veteran in the U.S. has seen the site, so now there is no danger of me ever even attempting something like this again. I was wrong, but I am asking you to please allow me to get on with my life, or what is left of it after this. You are no longer punishing me, you are punishing my family. I have been punished to the full extent, but possibly you just do not care. I don't know.

If you do not print this. at least permot me the courtesy of answering my e-mail and telling me that you will remove it, ot telling me that it will be there permanently and to go to hell because nothing anyone does is good enough to atone for what they did.

 Subject: Enough !

My apology has been on your site for over a year. My expose was there for over 3 years. I have done all that you asked of me and have not represented myself as a POW in all this time. The newspaper article and your website was distributed all over my community and to all family members. I would never dare use any pretense after so many have seen the article. I showed the original posting, the apology and copies of letter that i have sent to you to my attormey and he says they now constitute harrassment. He also says that any such suit would shut your site down until the case was settled. I have nothing to lose and cannot possibly be embarassed any more than i have been, It was my fault and I take the blame for it, but i would say that I have "served my time" and my attorney agrees. He also mentioned that a website showing convicted sex offenders was forced offline due to it violating their civil rights. I now believe that you will neve! r take my name and apology off your site, so I have no other recourse than to use the ACLU to defend my civil rights. If you wish to reply to this e-mail, please do so within 7 days and i will call off the ACLU. They said it would be about a month before they could get to my case, but i had to sign the papers in a week. I hope this does not happen. I am sorry for what i did and have done all i can to make amends, but I feel that the punishment does not fit the crime in this case.

Dan C. Corley

Whatever you say is what i will do. I wont take your time to try to explain why i felt that way and perhaps it does not matter. I LIED. I was not a POW and cannot ever make that claim. I do not possess and altered 214 and the ribbons will be either donated to a museum or they will be destroyed as you wish. I do not own a uniform so there is nothing to destroy there. I am moving from this city and it is no more than I deserve. My family has suffered enough shame because of me and I will cause neither them nor your organization more problems. I deserved to be shown up and I have been. For a few moments of attention, I have lost everything and it is no more than I deserve. I am leaving my business and my home and all that know me and that is hard, but I brought it upon myself and no one else is to blame. Sir, you are doing the right thing. Those of us who do this are little better than dirt and not worthy to even associate with those of you who were the real heros. You will never see or hear of me again in this manner and hopefully you will never see or hear of me in any way. I do not know why I did it and can make NO excuses. All i can do is apologize to the families of the REAL POWS and MIAs and to you and your group. Believe it or not I am a very partriotic person who does love this country, This one weekend has cost me my business and my friends and so much misery that I can hardly bear it, but that is entirely my fault. Once again....you are doing the right thing.
Goodbye sir.
