MAN INDICTED FOR CLAIMING TO BE A VETERAN IN ORDER TO RECEIVE MEDICAL CARE FROM VA

Richard J. Griffin, Inspector General, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), announced today that in U.S. District Court, St. Louis, MO, James C. Brown was indicted by a Federal grand jury for theft of Government services.

Griffin stated that the indictment resulted from an investigation conducted by his Central Field Office.  The indictment alleges that in June 1993, Brown, who is not a veteran, presented an altered military discharge form to the VA Medical Center, St. Louis, in order to receive medical care to which he was not entitled.  From June 1993, until December 1998, he continued to receive fraudulently over $285,000 worth of medical care.  If convicted, Brown faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Reap, Eastern District of Missouri, is prosecuting this case.
