MAN INDICTED FOR CLAIMING TO BE A VETERAN IN ORDER TO RECEIVE
MEDICAL CARE FROM VA
Richard J. Griffin, Inspector General, Department of Veterans
Affairs (VA), announced today that in U.S. District Court, St. Louis, MO, James C. Brown
was indicted by a Federal grand jury for theft of Government services.
Griffin stated that the indictment resulted from an investigation
conducted by his Central Field Office. The indictment alleges that in June 1993,
Brown, who is not a veteran, presented an altered military
discharge form to the VA Medical Center, St. Louis, in order to receive medical care to
which he was not entitled. From June 1993, until December 1998, he continued to
receive fraudulently over $285,000 worth of medical care. If convicted, Brown faces
up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Reap, Eastern District of Missouri,
is prosecuting this case.
