Gene Franklin DeFord

Gene DeFord, WWII Veteran, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 6, 2009. ... During his UDT years, his team set several free-diving depth records.
At Normandy on June 8, 1944, Gene was cited for a Silver Star by General Ted Roosevelt. That same day he was cited for another Silver Star by Lord Louie Mountbatten. On June 13, 1944, he was again cited for a Silver Star by General George Patton. Gene believed he was the only 17-year-old to have ever received a triple Silver Star. "The water ran red with American Blood. Our team lost 95%. We were getting killed on the beach. I was not injured, but just a little tired," from Gene's memoirs.
Gene helped liberate prison camps and was proud to have been aboard the USS Franklin "Big Ben", the most decorated people in Naval history. He served on the islands of Tarawa and Iwo Jima during major battles. On October 24, 1944, Gene was engaged in the battle of the Philippine Sea on Palawan Island. He was severely injured and was cited for the Purple Heart.  .....

I know that some of our WWII associates in the OSS Maritime Unit worked in Great Britain, but didn’t think that any of the UDT training took place there. This leads me to be suspicious of all of the claims offered in this obituary.
SR

We have no record of this man being in the Teams, ever. The triple silver star for a 17 year old is way beyond belief.

RD

Had he been a seaman he would have trained at Sampson in NYS - the only source of the seamen for Normandy. I can tell you that he was NOT a member of a demolition unit at Normandy. He would have used correct terminology and never confused OSS and the Navy's demo men. He is not listed among the OSS Swimmers Group affiliated with the London Office
of the OSS.

His obit says he was on the USS Ben Franklin - I presume as either ship's company or as a passenger. If he was part of ship's company, then he was fleet personnel and not likely to have been part of the OSS.

He most likely did "boot camp" at a Naval Training Center in his home state. Perhaps there was one near Bremerton.

Huntington Beach, CA
Has posted his resume as follows:

"Don began working in photography in high school and after  graduating he was accepted at Disney's school for fine arts, the California Institute of Art. He worked for 3 years at the University of Southern California Medical Center doing medical photography, then taught high school photography. He then ventured out on his own and started a black and white commercial lab and Photo Gallery, which he ran for 6 years. The next 9 years he owned and operated a commercial studio specializing in photographing food and high tech. For a number of years his career took a different path but photography remained his passion. In 1998 he once again focused on photography."

...nowhere in his resume doe she talk about being in the Navy nor is there a gap that would allow time for a Navy career.

Don currently lives in Ontario Canada and runs a small curio shop. If you  visit his shop you will see Don has a display of pictures and medals that he claims he won in Vietnam - with a Purple Heart among his medals.

stockwather, may I ask why you even waste your time with the #####? I  find it very interesting that she seems to be as defiant as the taliban. Having flown F-18s for the U.S. Navy, let me assure you, the power is awesome. The taliban is mocking the country while they are in hiding. They are surging their citizens to be brave, while they themselves are hanging out in caves, or fleeing the country. If you ever see first hand what a missle can do, you might not be so flippant. The ##### is merely baiting us, knowing that the U.S. will come roaring back marketwise. don

Tofu moose? My friend I have flown many missions for the navy in a search and rescue capacity, and I must say that I don't think that was nearly as scary as the thoughts of staring down a plateful of tofu moose!!! Had a soy burger once, called the emergency room, called the lifeline helicopters, called the CDC, called priests, rabbis, and other assorted charlatons, but I don't know about this. you are so concerned about your "rights" as a disabled person. as i  recall  from my civics classes as citizens of the United States, we are guaranteed only 3 rights. those being: 1. the right of life, 2. the right of  liberty, 3. the right of the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. you seem to have given up  number 3 in the pursuit of misery and "the world owes me because i am disabled".  doesn't work that way my friend. rights are only their because someone fought for them and you are protecting them. amongst other injuries i gave my left ball in the defense of my country and my beliefs. do i piss and moan about it? hell no, i just chase pat around the room faster due to the decreased weight!!! get a grip yewscan, life is what you make of it. noone, and i repeat NO ONE owes you, me, or any one else jack shit. Hi,

I wanted to send you this link to the latest about Robert Deppe: http://lakeconews.com/content/view/21120/919/

He was sentenced to three years in state prison on a theft case on Monday morning. Apparently, he was a three strikes candidate due to two previous first degree burglary convictions about 20 years ago. He also used counterfeiting to cover his tracks. That seems to be a theme in his story -- stealing from others and then using subterfuge and fake documents to cover himself.

Thanks again for your help in unmasking him....

LAKEPORT -- A former Lakeport Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2015 commander, who resigned in February amid an arrest and allegations that his service record was falsified, was sentenced to three years in state prison on Aug. 22.

Robert L. Deppe, 57, pleaded guilty in June to felony petty theft with three prior similar convictions stemming from an incident in which he stole $800 from his brother-in-law and allegedly replaced the amount with phony bills. ......

Deppe had been post commander at the time of his arrest but soon resigned after post officials asked Deppe about the arrest and reports received by the post that he had falsified his service record.

In March, Deppe declined to comment on the service-record allegations when contacted by the Record-Bee at the time reports surfaced.

The VFW, at the state and national levels, is looking into the validity of Deppe's reported service record, Macdonald said. "It has yet to be determined," he said.......

Palm Desert, CA
Claims to be a former Navy SEAL sniper. Claims his records are sealed and no  one can look at them.

Sir,

I greatly appreciate your interest in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams, and your search for the TRUTH. Before answering your questions I must make clear that I am a private individual, not affiliated with the US Dept. of Defense or any other government organization. My efforts to expose SEAL imposters are performed as a service to the public, and in honor of my fallen SEAL Teammates… men who truly earned the right to the title “US NAVY SEAL” but who are no longer able to stand forward in defense of their honor, their reputations, and their TEAMs.

If the name you provided is spelled correctly, I do NOT find a listing in the SEAL Database (SEAL Teams and predecessor units from 1943 to the Present Day) for anyone named Dudley Detamore. I have also examined possible alternate spellings, and names with similar pronunciations without finding any that appear to be applicable.

Unless he has undertaken the unlikely action of a legal name change (an action for which there would be evidence in the form of court documentation) since his claimed participation in SEAL training, and based upon the information you have provided, I can state conclusively that Dudley Detamore has NEVER COMPLETED SEAL training, and he is not now, nor was he ever a Navy SEAL, a Navy UDT “Frogman”, a member of any Naval Combat Demolition Unit (NCDU), or a member of the Naval Amphibious Scouts & Raiders (S&R).

When members of the Naval Special Warfare community meet others who claim similar service, but whom they do not recognize, there is a conversational exchange of information that establishes the bona fides of each to the other. There is no set formula for this exchange, nor for the information that is exchanged, but it ALWAYS takes place, and the REAL Naval Special Warfare members can ALWAYS spot an imposter as a result of this exchange. If Mr. Dudley Detamore persists in insisting that his SEAL claims are legitimate, I might suggest that you ask him these questions:

-Since there is no listing in the SEAL Database for the name you are currently using, WHAT NAME DID YOU USE during SEAL training?

-What was his Training Class Number? (No SEAL ever forgets his class number, and there are no secret classes)?

-Where did his training take place? (Training has been conducted at several locations over the years; different portions in different places)?

-When did he graduate from SEAL training? (i.e. a specific graduation DAY/DATE)?

-What were his Primary and Secondary Naval Enlisted Classification (NEC) codes, or what was his Naval Officer Billet Code (NOBC)?

-Which SEAL Team(s) did you serve on, and when?

The answers to those questions are totally UNCLASSIFIED, and every real SEAL will gladly provide that substantiating information upon request.

Before any classified operations may be undertaken as a SEAL Operator, a man must first successfully complete the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) Training program and then the follow-on secondary training program. The names of all those who successfully graduate from that training program sequence are compiled in the SEAL database. Later participation in classified operations has no impact on whether or not a person is listed as a graduate of the training program. There are records of every man who has qualified for the title of “SEAL”; there have been and will continue to be secret missions, but there are NO secret SEALs.

Once again I must stress that although I am a US Navy veteran, and a former SEAL, I am a civilian performing in an entirely unofficial role. I strongly recommend that you obtain a formal/official US NAVY statement regarding Mr. Dudley Detamore's claimed SEAL credentials. To do so you may contact the PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE at the NAVAL SPECIAL WARFARE COMMAND in San Diego by calling (619) 522-2823, or you may contact the FOIA COORDINATOR at the NAVAL SPECIAL WARFARE COMMAND in San Diego, California, and submit a formal FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT inquiry in writing addressed to:

Commander

Naval Special Warfare Command

FOIA Coordinator

2000 Trident Way

San Diego, CA 92155

Thank you again for your concern in this matter, and for your assistance in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams. If I can be of any further assistance to you in this matter, please contact me at your convenience.

Respectfully,  Don Shipley BUD/S 131, SEAL Team ONE, SEAL Team TWO.

MULTIPLE FILINGS

Dimuzio, Robert Patrick  08/2008 El Paso, TX

... In an online article for ELPASOTIMES.COM entitled “Officer hurt in crash an ex-SEAL” (http://www.elpasotimes.com/news/ci_10145532) you offer the following statement:

Robert Patrick Dimuzio, the El Paso police officer critically injured late Wednesday in an off-duty motorcycle accident, is a well-liked officer and former U.S. Navy SEAL who enjoys working the graveyard shift, his commander said Friday.”

Further on in the article you state:

Maloney said Dimuzio was in the U.S. Navy for about eight years and was a member of the SEALs, a maritime force involved in direct action and special reconnaissance operations.

While it is unfortunate that officer Dimuzio was injured, either in the line of duty or off duty, and while the community in which he serves certainly deserves to know of his accident, the information contained in your story is not entirely factual. I am one of about a dozen persons in the nation who holds a current/up-to-date copy of the SEAL Database – a comprehensive listing of all men who successfully graduated from the US Navy’s UDT/SEAL training course (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training… referred to as “BUD/S”). While that database does include the names of many men who are factual heroes, and a few who have transgressed the laws of our land, it does not contain the name “Robert Patrick Dimuzio”. In point of fact there are no listings in the entirety of the database (end of WWII to the present day) for anyone with the last name “Dimuzio” or any spelling variant thereof.

Unless he has undertaken the unlikely action of a legal name change (an action for which there would be supporting proof in the form of court documentation) since his supposed service with the SEAL Teams, I can state conclusively that ROBERT PATRICK DIMUZIO has NEVER completed SEAL training, and he is not now, nor was he ever a US Navy SEAL or UDT “Frogman”....

DOOLEY, CHRIS 06/2011 .

Frequents Militia Hill Hawk WatchDooley brags about his days as a Navy Seal.

If the name you provided is spelled correctly, I do NOT find a listing in the SEAL Database (SEAL Teams and predecessor units from1943 to the Present Day) for anyone named CHRIS/CHRISTOPHER DOOLEY. I have also examined possible alternate spellings, and names with similar pronunciations without finding any that appear to be applicable. There are only THREE (3) men with that last name listed in the SEAL Database. None of them has either a first or middle name “CHRIS/CHRISTOPHER”.

Unless he has undertaken the unlikely action of a legal name change (an action for which there would be evidence in the form of court documentation) since his claimed participation in SEAL training, and based upon the information you have provided, I can state conclusively that CHRIS/CHRISTOPHER DOOLEY has NEVER COMPLETED SEAL training, and he is not now, nor was he ever a Navy SEAL, a Navy UDT “Frogman”, a member of any Naval Combat Demolition Unit (NCDU), or a member of the Naval Amphibious Scouts & Raiders (S&R).

If Mr. DOOLEY persists in insisting that his SEAL claims are legitimate, I might suggest that you ask him these questions:

-Since there is no listing in the SEAL Database for the name you are currently using, WHAT NAME DID YOU USE during SEAL training?

-What was his Training Class Number? (No SEAL ever forgets his class number, and there are no secret classes)?

-Where did his training take place? (Training has been conducted at several locations over the years; different portions in different places)?

-When did he graduate from SEAL training? (i.e. a specific graduation DAY/DATE)?

-Which SEAL Team(s) did you serve on, and when?

The answers to those questions are totally UNCLASSIFIED, and every real SEAL will gladly provide that substantiating information upon request. Asking him these questions will make it very clear to him that you are not only informed on the subject of Navy SEALs, but that you are aware of the truth regarding his fraudulent claims.

CHRIS/CHRISTOPHER DOOLEY’s claimed SEAL credentials.

Wow.

My understanding is a journalist is duty-bound to check basic facts for a story.  You need to know in this case that real original WWII Rangers are very few and far between, and I did a very simple google search that in 30 seconds told me this guy was not one.

You failed in your journalistic duties, and may have set up the old fellow for embarrassment when the real ones find out.  I hope you read that again - you may have set up the old fellow for embarrassment when the real ones find out.

I recommend you familiarize yourself with the concept of Stolen Valor and the epidemic of individuals claiming military service and heroism to which they are not authorized.

I am a legitimate veteran Ranger officer from the Desert Storm timeframe.  I take it as a personal insult when someone claims to be one of the original Darby's Rangers, as many of them (and many now deceased) are my heroes, and friends.

DRAGOONE, JEROME 10/2009 . Claims to have been a SEAL. When asked if he was with East or West Coast Teams and he said East. When  asked when he was at Little Creek and he said "I was in Norfolk".

I greatly appreciate your interest in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams, and your search for the TRUTH. Before answering your questions I must make clear that I am a private individual, not affiliated with the US Dept. of Defense or any other government organization. My efforts to expose SEAL imposters are performed as a service to the public, and in honor of my SEAL Teammates who gave their lives in service to our nation… men who truly earned the right to the title “US NAVY SEAL” but who are no longer able to stand forward in defense of their honor, their reputations, and their TEAMs.

If the name you provided is spelled correctly, I do NOT find a listing in the SEAL Database (end of WWII to the Present Day) for anyone named JEROME DRAGOONE. I have also examined possible alternate spellings, and names with similar pronunciations without finding any that appear to be applicable. In point of fact there is no listing for anyone with the last name DRAGOONE or any variation thereof in the entirety of the SEAL Database.

Unless he has undertaken the unlikely action of a legal name change (an action for which there would be evidence in the form of court documentation) since his claimed attendance at BUD/S training, and based upon the information you have provided, I can state conclusively that JEROME DRAGOONE has NEVER COMPLETED SEAL training, and he is not now, nor was he ever a Navy SEAL or a Navy UDT “Frogman”.

When members of the Naval Special Warfare community meet others who claim similar service, but whom they do not recognize, there is a conversational exchange of information that establishes the bona fides of each to the other. There is no set formula for this exchange, nor for the information that is exchanged, but it ALWAYS takes place, and the REAL Naval Special Warfare members can ALWAYS spot a phony as a result of this exchange. If you have an opportunity to speak with the man at some point in the future, I might suggest that you ask Mr. DRAGOONE these questions:

(1) Since there is no listing in the SEAL Database for the name you are currently using, WHAT NAME DID YOU USE during SEAL training?

(2) What was his BUD/S Class Number? (NB: No SEAL ever forgets the class number he shouted all day long, every day, for 6 months)

(3) Where did his training take place? (NB: Training has been conducted at several locations over the years; different portions in different places)

(4) When did he graduate from Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training? (i.e. a specific graduation DATE)

(5) When did he enter the US Navy (a specific month and year)

(6) When did he leave the US Navy (a specific month and year)

(7) What was Naval Enlisted Classification code

There are many other questions which could be asked to further establish the level of veracity or untruth regarding his claims, such as asking for the names of other members of his graduating class, but those basic questions are absolutes. The answers to those questions are totally UNCLASSIFIED, and every real SEAL will gladly provide that substantiating information upon request.

I might suggest that you also ask Mr. DRAGOONE to specifically identify WHICH SEAL Team(s) he served on, and when. I am in direct contact with several hundred of my SEAL Teammates whose collective experience covers virtually all time periods from the Korean War to the present; I can quickly contact those individuals to verify any specific names, events, or other claims offered by Mr. DRAGOONE. If he feels that his name has somehow been mistakenly omitted from the SEAL records, I’d be pleased to speak with him and hear details of his service which would serve to validate his claims. The Director of the Naval Special Warfare Archives – a close personal friend and SEAL Teammate – is only a phone call away and standing by to amend the records if this is ever found to be true. However, I estimate that I’ve made the same offer to more than 5,000 SEAL imposters in the last eight years, and none of them ever turned out to be a valid SEAL.

No one gets to the SEAL Teams without first completing BUD/S Training. There are records of every man who has qualified for the title of “SEAL”; there have been and will continue to be secret missions, but there are NO secret SEALs… we know them all.

Please accept my personal appreciation for your service to the nation in the US Navy, and thank you again for your concern in this matter, and for your assistance in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams.
