Industries (at the time, the OFFICIAL USG contractor for the Medal of
Honor) admitted selling THREE HUNDRED unauthorized medals for $75.00
each from 1991-1994. They were fined $80,000. NOT ALL of those medals
have been recovered. Offenders in possession of an
unauthorized medal can be arrested, fined (up to $10,000) and jailed
(up to a year). It is the only military medal that CANNOT be bought,
sold, bartered, traded, collected, auctioned, exchanged.... EVERY
Medal of Honor is awarded by act of Congress. Less than 150 REAL Medal
of Honor recipients are alive today.

I would have a hard time putting my work into one catagory. My writing
depends a lot on my moods or whatever strange thoughts may pop into my
head. I am a former Green Beret who has mellowed a lot through the
years. I have lived through the turmoil of the sixties, the degradation
of the seventies and eighties and the greed of the nineties. I draw on
all of these experiences in my writings. I have seen death up close and
personal have loved, lost loves and have at times just given up. I
have come to realize that I cannot control other peoples actions but can
control my reaction to them. Life is so much simpler since I discovered
this truth. I find joy in the simple things in life, a fresh morning
breese, gentle sunset and just holding that someone special. My poetry
is far reaching from the tradgedy of war to the gentle flight of a
butterfly. Keep reading my work you never know just what is goin to pop
into this empty space between my ears.

I am a 51 year old single man from Va.
Claims a total of nine years total with the Green Beret/Special
Forces - stationed in Germany. He has claimed TWO tours of
duty in Vietnam, having been shot and having shrapnel wounds, and then
working on a failed rescue attempt of the Iranian hostages and then also
infiltrated with drug lords in the jungles of South America and CIA
involvement where his own wife didn't know his whereabouts.
I have read a few of your works..some about
Vietnam..they do not ring true.to me as a Vietnam vet myself..your words
are hollow and have no feeling..they are the words of a man that is
exspressing something he knows nothing about..the poem Napalm sounds as
if you watch apocalypse now then tried to write a poem that would place
you there..not good.. (reply?)
I just finished reading some of your
comments on others poems..well untill I threw up then I quit
reading...you say your 51 yet you went to Vietnam in 1968 for 2
tours...you do realize that you were only 14 in 1968 right?..the you
must have left around the age of 17 what with 2 tours and all..then you
were a merc.in Rodiesia..you did not say how long..thank God... you were
a green beret and on an A team, and sniper. Going by the time line of
you being born in 1954 the only way you could have seen combat in
Vietnam is in your mind...you have done a dispicable thing being a poser
wanna-be..you have disrespected all those that really served in Vietnam
and as for me a combat wounded Vietnam Marine vet I find your stories
and that is all they are ugly and rude...you have no respect for
yourself and obviously none for anyone else either..you are the lowest
form of life and you should write an appology to everyone who has ever
commented on your stories possitively..Let me close with this bit of
advce...Never let a real combat vet hear you spue youe garbage in person
they tend to get cranky over that

It was a clerical error he explained, that brought on the wrath of the

But according to former Army Ranger and Army Ranger Instructor, Mike
Moore, it’s much more than a clerical error, it’s a matter of honor

Moore, along with a number of other current and

Taylor was listed as a former Army Ranger and distinguished Purple Heart

After checking a military database, Moore, along with retired Army

false, thus sparking an uproar among those who truly carried the title.....

AKRON -- An Akron teacher who masqueraded as a combat veteran once
threatened to bring a shotgun to school and shoot a special education
student who was making too much noise, according to his teaching file.
Benjamin Terril has been suspended from the Akron Public Schools
following his arrest on Sept. 1.
Akron Police found dozens of weapons, some believed to be illegal,
along with hand grenades and drugs inside Terril's home, police said.
Channel 3's Eric Mansfield checked Terril's teaching file, which
included Terril's claims that he served in the Army's elite 82nd
Airborne Division and was wounded during Desert Storm. A formal
request for Terril's military file resulted in the government denying
that Terril ever served a day in uniform. Terril had no comment when
asked about the phony claims of military service.
Also in Terril's file was a reprimand he received in 1999 for
threatening to bring a shotgun to Buchtel High School to shoot a
special education student who was making too much noise.
Several teachers overheard Terril make the statement; they felt it
was serious enough to report to the principal. Terril, a science
teacher, filed a two-page response in which he admitted making the
statement but claimed it was off-the-cuff and not meant to be taken
literally. Terril's 1996 resume is littered with inconsistencies that
should have been caught before he was hired.
Beyond forging a military background ,which Akron Schools never
validated, Terril also claimed he worked as range officer for Broward
County, FL, from 1992-94. Eric Mansfield checked with authorities
there who have no record of Terril ever being employed but they do
have a record of his arrest and conviction for Carrying a Concealed
Weapon.
Terril's hid that felony conviction from his 1996 job application
in Akron claiming instead that he had never been convicted of anything
beyond a minor traffic misdemeanor.
"How did that get past us?" said Akron Superintendent
David James. "And how did that get past the Ohio Dept. of
Education because he was issued a teaching license prior to working
here."
James, who became Superintendent Aug. 1, said staffers who hired
Terril in 1996 didn't do enough "due diligence" in verifying
his work and criminal history. He said Terril's ability to manipulate
the system was a "cause for concern."
New, mandatory FBI background checks, which include fingerprinting,
are providing a much better picture of employees' pasts, James said.
Terril was due to have an updated background check in September of
2009, which is when his teaching license would have been up for
renewal. A school spokeswoman said the district expects that Terril's
prior criminal history would have come out then had he not been
arrested a few weeks ago.
Hear what Akron School leaders have to say about the mistakes made
in hiring Terril for the classroom tonight on Channel 3 News at 6.

Subject: Former teacher who fabricated military service released
Date: Sat, 30 May 2009 00:23:19 -0400
AKRON -- A teacher who fabricated a
military background to include combat service in Iraq was released
early from prison, having served less than three months of an 18-month
sentence for drugs and weapons.
Benjamin Terril, 51, must attend regular meetings with the courts and
must maintain residence at his Akron home.
Terril was fired as a science teacher at Akron's Buchtel High School
after Channel 3's Eric Mansfield exposed that Terril
lied on his teaching application by creating a phony military history
that included war service and combat medals with the 82nd Airborne.
Terril was arrested on Labor Day after he pointed a loaded gun at
another man's head. Akron police searched his home and found drugs and
what they called "an arsenal" of guns and knives.
Police said Terril claimed he had dozens of weapons because he had
been in the Army.
Through a public records request, Eric Mansfield
determined that Terril never served a single day in uniform.

Frank Thayer was the third man in a week to be arrested for allegedly
lying about receiving military honors.
Federal officials arrested a Gulfport man Tuesday for allegedly making
false claims about serving in Vietnam and receiving a Purple Heart.
Frank Thayer, 59, is the third area man in a week to be arrested and
charged with lying about military service and honors.
In an affidavit, Thayer admitted to Veterans Affairs special
investigators that in spite of owning a Purple Heart medal with ribbon,
a Bronze Star with ribbon, an Army ring, commander's pilot wings,
seemingly official documents and clothing bearing Purple Heart patches,
he had never served in the military nor received any medals. He said he
bought the medals at a military surplus store.
Thayer admitted creating a motivational DVD celebrating his service that
he sold to civic organizations. He told a former girlfriend all his
military papers were destroyed by Katrina.
"He was tricking everybody. It's just an insult to true military
veterans. It's an assault on them," said Assistant U.S. Attorney
Ruth Morgan, the Gulfport-based prosecutor of the case.
Thayer was released on $25,000 unsecured bond. He faces multiple
charges, and could receive up to 6 months in prison and fines of $5,000
per violation, said Morgan.
Last Tuesday, Christopher Billeaud, 52, of Gulfport, and John Wayne
Lebo, 57, of Tylertown were arrested on charges of lying about receiving
Purple Hearts and other military medals. Billeaud's wife spoke on his
behalf in an interview last week, denying all charges.
Special Agent John R. Ramsey of the VA and the FBI have been involved in
all three cases. Ramsey said in a telephone interview that he could not
comment on the cases, or whether these arrests were part of a crackdown
on military fraud.
Originally, only those who faked receiving a Medal of Honor, the highest
award given by the military, were culpable by law. But in response to
rising claims of military service fraud and the publication of the book
"Stolen Valor," by B.G. Burkett, the Stolen Valor Act of 2005
made false claims of many military medals punishable by law.
According to Diamondhead's Henry Cook, national commander of the
Military Order of the Purple Heart, "It's in fashion to be a war
hero again." Requirements for earning a purple heart can be found
at purpleheart.org.
He said fraud is frequently uncovered when people apply to join his
organization, and the VA's attention to the matter is "a
turnabout."

GULFPORT, Miss. -- A Gulf Coast man has been sentenced to a year's
probation for making false claims about earning military decorations
and medals.
Federal prosecutors say Frank Thayer made false verbal and written
representations that he had served in the military and been awarded
the Purple Heart.
Prosecutors say the 59-year-old Thayer purchased Purple Heart and
Bronze Star medals without legal authority.
A federal judge sentenced Thayer on Monday to one year of probation,
50 hours of community service, and a $2,000 fine.
Court officials say the proceeds of that fine will go to the Biloxi VA
Hospital for the care of real Purple Heart recipients.

Jerome Ticker, dressed in a captain's Navy whites complete with Navy
Cross, Silver Star and Purple Heart decorations, was quite the striking
figure at his wedding in Slidell.
The problem is, he never served in the Navy, or in any branch of the
military.
Ticker, 42, of the Holden community in Livingston Parish, had
convinced his fiancée that he was a war hero, a Navy Seal festooned
with medals, and so it was only fitting for him to decorate himself to a
T for their April 12 nuptials.
While the bride may have fallen for Ticker's tale, at least one
person at the ceremony didn't buy it, and notified authorities.
On Tuesday, Ticker pleaded guilty in New Orleans to a federal
charge of illegally wearing the medals and was sentenced by U.S.
District Judge Jay Zainey to 12 months of home confinement, followed
by two years of supervised release and a $500 fine.
"He said he was motivated as a desire to impress his
wife," U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said.
Ticker could not be reached for comment.
The Stolen Valor bill, passed into law in 2006, expanded and
increased federal penalties for falsely claiming to have earned any
decoration or medal authorized by Congress for the armed forces.
Ticker bought the uniform online and the awards from a local
military surplus store, according to Special Agent D'Wayne W. Swear,
the New Orleans investigator for the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative
Service.
Ticker, who works for a building maintenance company in Gonzales,
posed as a Navy captain, the rank just below rear admiral. Previously,
with his first wife, he had played the part of a lieutenant commander
in the Navy, Swear said.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Louisiana man is sentenced to a year of home
confinement after pleading guilty to illegally wearing military medals
at his wedding.
U.S. District Judge Jay Zainey also on Tuesday sentenced
42-year-old Andy Jerome Ticker, of Holden, to two years of supervised
release and ordered him to pay a $500 fine.
Prosecutors say Ticker has never served in the armed forces, but he
wore a U.S. Navy captain's dress white uniform at his April 12 wedding
in Slidell.
The uniform was adorned with several medals and decorations,
including a Silver Star, Purple Heart and Navy Cross. The latter is
the second highest medal next to the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Wearing military medals without proper authority is a federal
crime.
Vendors,
truckers, friends sponsor GATS poker run for ‘Old Sarge’
OOIDA Life Member John Timmons of Vancouver, WA, goes by “Old Sarge”
and takes that nickname from his days as a Marine in Vietnam where he
served as a staff sergeant.
He was in Vietnam a long time
– from 1967 to 1970 – voluntarily serving three tours to shield his
brother from having to go the war zone. Timmons came home a decorated
soldier with three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star.
But his wounds came home with
him, too, and now he’s scheduled for surgery on Sept. 25 to see if
some of the VA’s top doctors can undo the damage done by a
land mine years ago.
His many friends, including
Jerry Sims of Gulf Coast Filters Inc., figure Old Sarge
could use a helping hand, so they organized a charity poker run at GATS.
The poker run begins at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, and continues through
4 p.m. Friday.
Participating booths include
Engine Maxx at Booth No. 14087 – where the
run starts – as well as OOIDA at Booth No. 13089 and Gulf Coast
Filters Inc. at Booth No. 8998.
Prizes include an Engine Maxx
fuel-saving device; a PressurePro tire
pressure monitoring system worth $795; and a Turbo 3000, valued at $300.
Old Sarge
told Reed Black on Land Line Now
that he was “at a loss for words” to describe his appreciation for
the thoughtfulness of Sims and the others involved in the poker run.

Trauma leads to endless pain and suffering....
Stationed in Vietnam in an area known as "The Devil's Back
Yard," Arthur Torgesen twice eluded death while nearly everyone
else in his unit perished. People close to him say Torgesen was awarded
two Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. But for all his
great escapes, he could not outrun his demons. ...
Torgesen fled a bunker in Cu Chi before explosives wiped out more
than two dozen other members of the 25th Infantry Division, said Dennis
Olson, a fellow Vietnam veteran. But when Torgesen talked about cheating
death before an ambush that killed 150 others, he told Olson he felt
guilty and wondered if he could have "prevented the whole
thing" by firing a warning shot...
... Twenty-five years ago, Sherry Harnden entered Artie's life. He told
Olson he met her at a party. The man who Olson says won a Silver Star by
jumping into a bunker in the jungle with an M-16 and firing away found
somebody with whom he could exchange love letters. A box of them was kept
'til the end, Michael Torgesen said. ...
... Talk occasionally led to Torgesen's medals. The Star Tribune could
not verify those medals, but Michael Torgesen said he saw them while he was
growing up and Ann Harnden said she, too, knew of them. ...
..."He was a Vietnam war hero. He wasn't the type of person to kick
back and die of old age." ...

Topeka Man Wants Shorter Sentence Due to SEAL Service
11:14 AM Sep 26, 2006
AP
A Topeka man accused of killing a passenger when he lost control of his
truck says he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder from his
time as a US Navy SEAL.
Glenn Triebwasser was convicted of involuntary manslaughter under the
influence of alcohol last month. He also was convicted of driving on a
suspended license, failure to maintain a single lane and a seat belt
infraction.
He was behind the wheel of the truck when it rolled over on
Interstate 70 in Topeka last year, killing 40-year-old Billie Jo Baldwin
of Meriden.
His lawyers are arguing Triebwasser should be given a shorter sentence.
But the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado, California, says
his name doesn't appear in the Navy's records of SEALs. Coronado is the
primary training facility for the SEALs.

attended a PTSD group therapy session at the KC Vet Center, and has also
attended groups at the VA hospital. The day he came to the Vet Center,
he told us he was a Blue Beret who was attached to the Green Berets who
were attached to the Marines.
When he told his story at the Vet Center,
I called him on it. He immediately went to the VA hospital and checked
into the psych ward, which makes me believe he is claiming PTSD. When he
checked out, he immediately left town and moved to Lawrence, Kansas,
....He told me several stories, ranging from beating
prostate and brain cancer with frankincense, myrrh and prayer, to
Russian double agents threatening his life, to attaining doctoral
degrees in music at Oxford....
Former Charlestonian Robert Bornmann sent this lookback item:
"Clarence Darrow 'Duke' Tully, Stonewall Jackson High School class
of 1949, played the bugle in our marvelous Stonewall marching band. In
Arizona, John McCain picked Tully to be godfather of his first child.
Tully, publisher of the Arizona Republic and the Phoenix Gazette,
boasted that he was an Air Force hero of the Korean and Vietnam wars -
but ultimately was exposed as a phony who never served in the military.
He is now retired in Florida."
