It is the only military medal that CANNOT be bought, sold, bartered, traded, collected, auctioned, exchanged.... EVERY Medal of Honor is awarded by act of Congress. DeGroat, Don W 11/2007 Ontario, Canada

Huntington Beach, CA
Has posted his resume as follows:

"Don began working in photography in high school and after  graduating he was accepted at Disney's school for fine arts, the California Institute of
Art. He worked for 3 years at the University of Southern California Medical Center doing medical photography, then taught high school
photography. He then ventured out on his own and started a black and white commercial lab and Photo Gallery, which he ran for 6 years. The next 9
years he owned and operated a commercial studio specializing in photographing food and high tech. For a number of years his career took a different path but photography remained his passion. In 1998 he once again focused on photography."

...nowhere in his resume doe she talk about being in the Navy nor is there a gap that would allow time for a Navy career.

Don currently lives in Ontario Canada and runs a small curio shop. If you  visit his shop you will see Don has a display of pictures and medals that he claims he won in Vietnam - with a Purple Heart among his medals.

.... truly, you have really overstepped the line of being full of ####.  hell no i don't know what i am talking about, i only flew f-15's for the navy for years, and you worked on "wink wink" secret projects. why don't you take your secretary and keep on writing emails to opmr telling them how to run their company. or better yet, maybe you should call Mr. Bush and become our national security advisor. hell you might even be a match in stupidity with sandy berger. don

stockwather, may I ask why you even waste your time with the #####? I  find it very interesting that she seems to be as defiant as the taliban. Having flown F-18s for the U.S. Navy, let me assure you, the power is awesome. The taliban is mocking the country while they are in hiding. They are surging their citizens to be brave, while they themselves are hanging out in caves, or fleeing the country. If you ever see first hand what a missle can do, you might not be so flippant. The ##### is merely baiting us, knowing that the U.S. will come roaring back marketwise. don

Tofu moose? My friend I have flown many missions for the navy in a search and rescue capacity, and I must say that I don't think that was nearly as
scary as the thoughts of staring down a plateful of tofu moose!!! Had a soy burger once, called the emergency room, called the lifeline helicopters, called the CDC, called priests, rabbis, and other assorted charlatons, but I don't know about this. Can I tame it with a bottle of tobasco and smother the evil thing in garlic? don

you are so concerned about your "rights" as a disabled person. as i  recall  from my civics classes as citizens of the United States, we are guaranteed only 3 rights. those being: 1. the right of life, 2. the right of  liberty, 3. the right of the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. you seem to have given up  number 3 in the pursuit of misery and "the world owes me because i am disabled".  doesn't work that way my friend. rights are only their because someone fought for them and you are protecting them. amongst other injuries i gave my left ball in the defense of my country and my beliefs. do i piss and moan about it? hell no, i just chase pat around the room faster due to the decreased weight!!! get a grip yewscan, life is what you make of it. noone, and i repeat NO ONE owes you, me, or any one else jack shit. • Task Force "Garry Owen" Provincial 1st Cav Div (Airmobile)
  • Rangers Lead The Way
  • 1st Infantry Training Brigade, Ft. Benning, (Last Assignment)

I arrived in South Vietnam in December, 1971. I was assigned to the infamous H Company, 1st Cavalry Division Reconnaissance unit, as a member of Ranger Team 78. We replaced the departing elements of the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
I was honored to attend an unofficial Recondo school because Project Delta had (supposedly?) ceased its operations and departed RVN on the 30th of June 1970, with the Recondo school officially closing on the 31st of December 1970. During its operational time the MACV-RECONDO school graduated 3,357 troops from a total of 5,395 who attended its courses. Due to this fact I never received an official recondo patch but I was given an in-country one.
After recondo training I was assigned to Fire Support Base Spudis which was more well know when it was named Fiddlers Green with coordinates YT943268. The Fire Support Base as Fiddlers Green opened on 12/30/71 and as Spudis it opened on 03/07/72.

The ORIGINAL tale.  Note the awards listed.

Currently Mr. Deppe has posted what I believe is a totally fictitious "war story" concerning his service as a member of H Company 75th Rangers with the 1st Cav Division in Vietnam. This tale is posted on several web sites:

and

Interestingly, the story on these sites appears to be an extended version or enhancement of the story listed on your "heroes or villains" site  incorporated into this new version of the story Mr. Deppe has lifted portions of stories posted on the web site of the LRRP/RANGERS OF THE FIRST CAVALRY DIVISION DURING THE VIETNAM WAR.

In these postings Mr. Deppe claims to have been awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart for his "courageous" actions with the Rangers.

We know that these postings are new and not related to the issue in 2005, because at least two of the three stories he plagiarized to enhance his story, were not written and posted until 2007.

Astoundingly, it appears that he has copied correspondence from and to Mr. Larry Curtis (president of the 1st Cav. Lrrp/Ranger Association) and Mr. Bill Anton (75th RRA Representative to the 1st Cav. Lrrp/Ranger Association). This correspondence appears in the notation on the "heroes or villains" site in which Mr. Curtis, and Mr. Anton refute all of Mr. Deppe's claims. This correspondence has been "reworded"  so that it appears to be an endorsement from both men of Mr. Deppe's story, his credentials as a LRRP/Ranger, and even calling him a "hero". The exact opposite of what they wrote and what is posted...

He has posted these false endorsements with his story on: www.geocities.com/coh75thrangers/index.html
Along with purported copies of citations to accompany his medals, and alleged statement of Mr. Anton verifying the authenticity of the medals and citations, again just the opposite of Mr. Anton's actual statements.

A ood bit of his tale is plagiarized directly from a letter posted by Scott Hancock in the Unit Guest book October 7th 2007.

==============================================

If you read down go to the sidebars indicating the medals he was awarded, click on the "Bronze Star" and it takes you to a copy of the Heroes or Villains list maintained by the POW Network, at:  http://users.cwnet.com/aljoy/phonies/phonies1057.htm.   This appears to be a bogus copy of the Heroes or Villains list containing the altered correspondence from Curtis and Anton, making it appear that he was checked out and that it was determined that he was legit.

The actual list maintained by the POW Network and the actual correspondence from Bill and Larry can be seen at:

Larry:

Please confirm that this individual was NOT a member of H/75. I went through the roster you sent me in Jan and could not find this guy. This guy Deppe also said he came to H/75 in Dec 71 - I was there during this time and through the end of April 72 and I don't remember this guy. I don't ever remember H/75 fighting in the battle of Khontoum - that was in II Corps. Yes, we did work III Corps and the Easter Offensive of 72 in An Loc and Loc Ninh. Seems this guy went to some books and did some creative writing.

Additionally - the photos are NOTHING of what I remember of what our unit AO looked like in Bien Hoa.

See the bottom of this message for some bogus Silver Star and Bronze Star Orders. This guy needs to be exposed!

Bill Anton
========

You will find the comments of Larry Curtis, our H/75 Assn President as well as my comments.

I would like to add that the "bogus" set of orders for a Silver Star and Bronze Star are inaccurate. The correct designation for our unit was:
Co. H (Ranger), 75th Inf (Abn)

- since all paratroopers were on hazardous duty orders and drew additional pay for this. If you see what he has it is incorrect.

Additionally, there would be NO reason for MACV to cut orders for these Valor awards, since our unit and the 1st CAV were part of USARV - NOT MACV, and the orders would have been cut from the 1st Cavalry Division.

The photos are a "dream of his. They do NOT reflect anything close to what our compound looked like in 1971-1972. I was there at the time that this "wannabe" said he was in our unit and I have NO recollection of him at all.

RLTW,

Bill Anton

Man in teen's death denied bail reduction / He admitted he had lied about being a Navy SEAL. He is accused of giving the girl a fatal dose of cocaine.
By Keith Herbert
Inquirer Staff Writer

David F. Downey, the boastful businessman prosecutors say provided the cocaine that killed a 17-year-old escort at his Limerick home, admitted in court yesterday that he was never a U.S. Navy SEAL.

Downey, however, is a bully, contended Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. He was trying to keep a judge from lowering Downey's $250,000 bail in connection with death of teenager Ashley Burg.

"I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen a criminal defendant who was more personally disliked," Castor said before yesterday's court hearing. "This guy has people who actually know him coming forward just to tell us things that he has done to them that indicate bad character."

Whether Downey, 52, was a SEAL became an issue last week when Montgomery County prosecutors petitioned the court to reject an effort by Downey to get his bail reduced. Prosecutors cited Downey's claims as evidence that the computer consultant might intimidate witnesses.

But at a hearing before Judge Richard Hodgson, Downey testified that he wasn't a SEAL, said Thomas C. Egan III, Downey's attorney.

Hodgson denied Downey's request for lower bail. Downey was taken from the courtroom in handcuffs and returned to Montgomery County Correctional Facility. A preliminary hearing date has not been scheduled.

In a court filing, Egan admitted that Downey wasn't a SEAL or, as he also had claimed, an undercover CIA operative.

Castor said it wasn't hard to find people who heard Downey brag about a nonexistent military record.

Or who said he had threatened them.

A school administrator had told prosecutors that Downey called the school and threatened to "rip the lungs" out of a third grader and the child's parents, Castor said on Thursday. The child was "not playing well" with one of Downey's children, he said.

In another incident, Downey said that he was "going to kill a waiter at a restaurant in Skippack" because Downey believed he'd received bad service, Castor said.

"He said he was going to have his Marine buddies laying for him out in the parking lot," Castor said. "We think this demonstrates that Downey is a bully."

Montgomery County detectives arrested Downey on Dec. 23 in Maryland, where he had purchased a home in Anne Arundel County. Downey was charged with drug delivery resulting in death, equivalent to third-degree murder, possession of cocaine, and patronizing a prostitute.

Through contacts made at a Philadelphia strip club called Tattle Tales South, Downey called for an escort to travel to his Limerick home on the night of July 30, police said.

A dancer at the bar, Kim Victorine, and her boyfriend, Derrick Schrandt, both of Philadelphia, drove Burg to Downey's home, arriving in the early hours of July 31. Schrandt sold Downey an "eight-ball," a street term for 3.5 grams of cocaine, police said.

A grand jury found that Downey furnished cocaine to Burg, and that she overdosed while lying on Downey's sofa. Downey failed to call for help, and later paid two people, Christine Shute and Mike Tees, both of Philadelphia, to take Burg's body from his home, court records state.

Burg's body was found along a road in Northeast Philadelphia on Aug. 1. Through his attorney, Downey had denied ever giving Burg cocaine and told police Burg was alive when she left his home.

Fake vet in Army uniform arrested for collecting funds
The Associated Press

TEMECULA, Calif. -- A man in uniform collecting "Fallen Soldiers Fund" cash outside a Temecula Wal-Mart has been arrested for impersonating a veteran and soliciting money for personal gain.
A Riverside County sheriff's sergeant says John Clifford Downs, who also goes by the name Johnny Frischknecht, was spotted outside the store asking for money while holding a homemade sign reading "Fallen Soldiers Fund."
The 44-year-old Downs told a police officer he was an Army major, but he couldn't produce a military identification. Sgt. Keith Knotek says it was determined Downs was not serving in the military and he was booked into jail.

Bigamy, fraud charges dog ex-Louisville man
For 20 years, Dumstorf reportedly juggled lives

By Andrew Wolfson
awolfson@courier-journal.com
The Courier-Journal

He stands accused in Florida of bigamy, for allegedly carrying on marriages to two women at once, during which time he proposed to a third.

Over 20 years, former Louisville businessman and educator George W. Dumstorf Jr. juggled three wives and a girlfriend, the women say, in what prosecutors call "a scheme to court single ladies ... and make money off of them."

To explain his frequent absences, he told the women, who didn't know each other, that he had a secret job at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, that he was an Air Force general, that he worked for the CIA.

None of it was true, according to spokesmen for those agencies.......

Thinking Stephanie was dead, the bishop gave his blessing, Weed said, and she married Dumstorf on March 27, 2004, in Panama City, Fla.

"Gen." Dumstorf wore his Air Force dress uniform.....

... In other cases the cultist escaped and went straight back to the cult ... He said his Seal team had pulled off six successful POW rescues in Vietnam. ...

=======================================

Years after my book was published, I learned that Duncan had never been a Seal.  I added the following to later editions of the book:

Much later I learned by visiting navyseals.com that Del Duncan¹s name appears on the ³Wall of Shame² for falsely claiming to be a Seal. The following appears at www.authentiseal.org/reportsd.htm:

NAME: Duncan, Del
FALSE CLAIM: SEAL
CITY: New Knoxville
STATE: OH
DATE POSTED: 05 MAY 2001
RATING: * * * * *
COMMENTS: Part of First Way Corps

The five-star rating, the worst possible, indicates that ³Claimant is Œincorrigible¹ and continues to make claims despite proof that his claims are not supported by government records.²
I never had a chance to ask Del about this because he died two years before it came to my attention, one year after I last spoke with him on the phone.

I'm sorry for perpetuating a falsehood.  But I still believe that most of what Duncan told me about The Way International was real.  Of course, now that he's dead, it's a little hard to pin him down on any of it.

Cheers,
Karl

You are correct there was NO successful POW Rescues by SEALs in VN. And NO D Duncan on our database.

Claims Master Chief in the US Navy Seals, and  POW during Desert Storm. Supposedly he was shot twice.
=================
Claims he was part of DS/DS. He told me that he was part of the SEAL Team that hit the beaches before the War started.. He claimed to be a Sniper for the SEALs and that he on several occasions had Saddam Hussein in his scope so clear, that he could count his (Saddams) nose hairs..  He was stationed with the SEAL Teams out of Virginia. Said that when he and his Team went ashore for a Mission in Kuwait, his Team came under heavy fire and he fell into a "Stick Pit" and was captured. He claimed that one other Member of his Team was KIA and his body burned so badly that they could not identify the remains and that he (Jimmy) had been mistaken for the dead SEAL, so his family had to bury an empty coffin. Later it was learned that he was in fact he was a P.O.W. in Baghdad and that he would be home soon..

He always said that his BUDs Class number was Classified and that due to the work he did with the CIA, that all of his SEAL information was Top Secret and he could not talk about specifics.. He claimed that during S.E.R.E. Training that he and his team "Captured" the SEAL Instructors..

He claimed he had a P.O.W. Medal, a Purple Heart and A NAVY Cross, for all that happened during the war.. He could not show them to me, cause they were given in a Secret Ceremony.

He supposedly works in the Oil Field somewhere down in Texas or in Arkansas.

If the name you provided was spelled accurately, we do NOT have a listing for anyone named James/Jimmy Lee Dyson Jr in our entire database of nearly 10,000 names. In fact we don’t have a single person listed with the last name DYSON. Please be aware that I also checked for possible spelling variations and alternate pronunciations but found none that matched.

Unless he has undertaken the unlikely action of a full legal name change since his claimed service with the SEAL Teams, I can state conclusively that James/Jimmy Lee Dyson Jr has NEVER completed SEAL training, and he is not now, nor was he ever a Navy SEAL. While there are other steps that must be completed before becoming a SEAL, BUD/S training is the first and most vital. Without having completed BUD/S training, a man cannot go on to become a SEAL.

It is quite common for those making fraudulent SEAL claims – especially claims involving extraordinary combat heroics – to cite a “secret” training class or “secret mission” as an explanation for the lack of military documentation to back up their stories. Not being satisfied with SEAL claims alone, these imposters often make additional claims of special skills (sniper, courier, etc), or of participation in covert operations for the CIA or other “shadowy” agencies, in order to re-emphasize the “ultra-secret” nature of the work they claim to have done and the “extremely classified” and “inaccessible” nature of their military records.

The overall intention is to convey to the listener that the person making the statements is not only an “extraordinary and deadly warrior”, but also one of the very rare persons the government has decided to trust with the most sensitive, top secret information… all in an effort to make the story teller appear “better” than those who hear his stories. I would caution you that while there are secret missions, there are NO secret SEALs… we know them all, and James/Jimmy Lee Dyson Jr isn’t one of us.

There is one other extremely important point to make regarding the man’s claims - there have NEVER been any UDT Frogmen or SEALs captured, detained, or held as prisoners of war... not in ANY war, not EVER! This important point of information may be verified by the POW Network (www.pownetwork.org).

I checked another online database held by the Department of Defense and accessed through www.military.com under the Freedom Of Information Act by using their Buddy Finder. That database contains over 10 million records, is one of the most complete available to the general public, and is fairly accurate from about 1974 to the present day. That database originally began as a listing of all military service personnel who might have been exposed to Agent Orange while on duty in Vietnam, and was a means of keeping records for later possible monetary compensation. It was subsequently expanded to include virtually ALL members of the military in later years. The closer to the present time, the more detailed and complete the records in the database. While I found listings for several men named James Dyson, none of them had the middle name “Lee”, and none of them were indicated as serving as a “Master Chief Petty Officer” (E9). Government documentation (at least that portion available through this particular DoD database) does not appear to substantiate his claims of military service, and he was most definitely NEVER A US NAVY SEAL! ...
