Army alerts feds of possible Stolen Valor case
By Brendan McGarry - Staff

Discrepancies in the service record of a Vietnam veteran seeking a
Medal of Honor have prompted the Army to alert the FBI of a potential
violation of the Stolen Valor Act, sources close to the investigation
said.
The case involves Terry Richard Calandra, 59, of Forks Township, Pa.,
who is commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 700
in Glen Gardner, N.J.
“After review of Mr. Calandra’s records, a number of potential
discrepancies were noted and the matter was referred to civilian law
enforcement for investigation of the potential violation of the Stolen
Valor Act,” said Lt. Col. Richard McNorton, a spokesman for Human
Resources Command.
The legislation, signed into law in 2006, makes falsely claiming a
military decoration or medal a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in
jail and/or a fine.
An investigator for the FBI declined to comment on the case.
Calandra said he was “baffled” by the Army’s action.
“All I know is I had eyewitness accounts on this,” he said.
“I’m going to stand on my military record. … If the Army wants to
change their mind, that’s their business. I’ll send my medals back.
I don’t need them.”
Calandra’s discharge paperwork states he received the Distinguished
Service Cross, the military’s second-highest award given for
“extraordinary heroism in action against an enemy,” as well as the
Silver Star, Bronze Star with “V” device for valor (second oak leaf
cluster), Purple Heart (fourth oak leaf cluster), the Army Commendation
Medal with “V” Device for valor (first oak leaf cluster) and other
decorations from a six-month tour in Vietnam in 1969, according to
portions of his service record provided by the National Personnel
Records Center in response to a Freedom of Information request from Army
Times.
The general orders and citations in
Calandra’s official service record for the two highest awards — the
Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star — conflict with
records at the National Archives and Records Administration, according
to copies of the documents obtained by Army Times.
General orders are issued by various
commands to announce awards, among other news, and are published in
chronological order in a given year.
In Calandra’s file, the U.S. Army Vietnam
general order announcing his Distinguished Service Cross is numbered
9,580.
According to the National Archives, U.S.
Army Vietnam only issued 4,519 general orders in 1969. The most general
orders USARV ever issued in any year during the conflict was 7,149 in
1966.
In Calandra’s file, the 9th Infantry
Division general order announcing his Silver Star is numbered 5,293.
That general order number corresponds to one
at the National Archives announcing a posthumous award of the Army
Commendation Medal for a different soldier, Spc. Larry Brown.
The documents contain other inconsistencies.
The Army most recently began reviewing Calandra’s file in August
after U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., forwarded an inquiry from Calandra
about his Medal of Honor nomination.
“Mr. Terry Calandra has contacted my Allentown office inquiring on
the status of his nomination for the Congressional Medal of Honor,”
Specter wrote in a July 18 letter to the Military Awards Branch.
“Since the request falls under your jurisdiction, I have forwarded you
a copy of his request.”
Specter later told a local newspaper editorial board that Calandra
should be considered for the military’s top award.
In an e-mail to Army Times, spokesperson Kate Kelly said, “Sen.
Specter’s office has been briefed by the Army concerning the questions
surrounding Mr. Calandra’s service.” She declined further comment.
In October, Pennsylvania state Rep. Richard T. Grucela introduced a resolution
“memorializing the Congress of the United States to award Terry
Calandra the Medal of Honor for valorous service during the Vietnam
Conflict.” The bill, which was co-signed by dozens of representatives,
died in committee.
Grucela’s office didn’t return a call seeking comment.

Claims Retired
Army Colonel, "Doctorate Degree", pilot in Vietnam, private
pilot. Claims he served in "clean-up in Nam and turned down a
promotion to General. Claims
he owns a plane, restaurant, shooting range, 2 gun stores, 3 cars, boat,
motorcycle, Humvee. Teaches Karate and broke his back. Left hospital
after 1 week with no PT.
2006 claims former U.S. Air Force pilot Vietnam. Claims ownership of
shooting range, large restaurant in Fremont, private plane, ownership of
Humvee, claims being widowed and deceased wife a doctor, and much
more.
10/2006 - He always bragged about his retirement pay, his Colonel's
retirement pay. Bragged that he gave a kidney to his identical twin
brother because his sister in-law begged him to do that. Claimed he was
widowed and his wife was a doctor, and every year he would fly into the
clouds and drop rose petals out the window of his plane on their
anniversary. He claimed once that he had to fly his brother's wife
through a storm to a hopital and in a life and death situation with a
doctor and 2 nurses aboard and according to him "get medical help
from a bigger hospital for an appendectomy." I cannot comprehend
that any hospital would turn away an appendectomy claiming they
"were not equipped to handle it".
08/2009 - His online name was "AMMO". He
bragged and bragged about being an Air Force Colonel and pilot in Viet
Nam.....owning 2 gun stores...a restaurant....his own plane in Nebraska
and so on.
His stories got more bizarre each week...and to the point where his
stories were laughable. He also claimed to have a PHD in
"Metallurgy"....soon to take on a job at some laboratory
because he was going to "sell the gun stores".
Claims broke his back teaching his Karate class
and was in the "hospital for a week but did not need
Physical Therapy.
He also claimed at that time and around 2000...that he
"invented the Linux software program". [If he did...then why
is he now in the heating and air-conditioning business?]
Claim he owned a 9,000 square foot house and his
driveway had a built in heater to melt ice in the winter.
He sure has a big ego.
He also related the "flight" to save
his sister in law's life. She was supposed to have had Appendicitis.
Well he flew her...2 nurses and one doctor in a snow storm to a hospital
that could handle an "appendectomy".
One more claim - was always his rank as Colonel....and
retired even after they "offered him a promotion to General"
but he "turned it down".

To Whom it may Concern,
....... Howard Campbell was
my history teacher. ..... Throughout _____ , my
commissioned service, and my preparation for deployment to Iraq in
the coming months, I have been guided by his stories of the army,
Vietnam, the Ranger Creed, and other tenets of honor. He has been a
close, intimate friend of mine, and every time I am home on leave I
try to take time to see him, often talking into the early hours of
the morning about the Army. I am still in shock today from reading
on your website that he, and all that he has represented to me, is a
complete fiction. I am also complicit in his world of lies, having
provided berets to him for a Christmas present. I knew there was
something lingering in my mind about his great exploits, and I can
only blame myself for going this long without acting on my
instincts. He has dishonored me, and every soldier who has truly
served his or her country in the time of war. I apologize to
legitimate members of the Special Operations and Ranger communities
for allowing their honor to be tarnished by my unknowing gifts.
Thank you for the bottom of
my heart for what you do, and I will do anything in my power to help
your efforts. Your careful study of frauds has allowed me to see
through my own idealism, and realize that heroes are the ones I
serve with every day, not ones that make up stories. I am indebted
to you.

Subject: I Want to Get Straight
Date: Thu, 1 Aug 2002 09:14:19 -0400
To Whom It May Concern:
A friend of mine alerted me to this website some time ago. At first, I
didn't know what to think. However, after intense thought, speaking with those who care for me, and vice-versa, I've decided to
contact you about matters listed here, and hopefully make amends.
How or why this came about in not the driving issue here. I just want to
get this all straightened out, if I can.
First, my DOB and license plate number are wrong, and my car does not have
Ranger and/or Special Forces logos, etc, on it. I also don't showcase awards, since I have few to showcase.
Second, I have never been awarded the Distinguished Service cross. I'm not
that courageous or brave. My highest award is
substantially less than that.
Third, I have never been awarded the Silver Star, for I'm not that
courageous of brave. I have never been awarded the Soldier's Medal, although I was nominated for one. It was subsequently downgraded to
an impact ARCOM. Thats as close as I ever got to it.
Fourth, I have never been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds, or for any
other reason set forth in Army regulations.
I know virtually nothing about Operation Phoenix and I have never killed
anybody.
I am not a Vietnam veteran; I am a Vietnam-era veteran. I was in the USAF,
but was discharged with a General under Honorable Conditions because I couldn't control myself with alcohol, racking up
numerous debts and article 15s along the way. I did receive a Special
Court Martial along the way, which preceeded my being discharged for
incompatibility.
I did serve in the Army from 1980 to 1991. I felt I had unfinished
business and my previous service needed to be atoned for.
However, my problems with alcohol followed me. When my unit deployed to
the Gulf, I was found convulsing on the floor one night from DTs. I won't
go into the specifics, but with hospitalization and counseling, I have
remained sober from that day. I'm going on 12 years of sobriety, one day
at a time.
I know nothing about Hamburger Hill, other than seeing the movie. I
am a doctoral candidate at Clemson University. I do have tattoos. I am a practitioner of martial arts. The closest I ever came to
the Rangers was completing the RIP phase of it. Thats all. I came
down on levy for overseas shortly thereafter. The closest I ever came to
Special Forces and the Q Course was taking the SF PT test-and failing it.
I have great respect and admiration for those who wear both berets, and
its clear to me why they are elite.
Because of my problems while I was in the Army, I underwent an AR15
investigation at the request of my commander. I was given the choice of
staying or going afterwards. I made the choice to leave. I was going to
leave ETS, at the end of my enlistment, anyway. I was honorably discharged
in 1991, with a three year ban on returning to the service. I did not
receive a court martial, and was not discharged because of a personality
disorder. I have no idea where that came from, but it is not true. I have
submitted a Form DD295 to MPRJ for update of my service records, since I
am entitled to certain awards and decorations. At the time of my
outprocessing, it was important to me and the Army that I leave as quickly as possible. It
wasn't important to me then; it is now.
I hope this clarifies things. I don't know where this all started, and I
don't want to know. This is a very painful portion of my
life-self-inflicted by me and an addiction, that I've been trying to put
behind me.
As stated before, I have great respect for the Rangers and Special Forces,
based on my brief contact with them. I want to apologize for anything that
has occurred concerning me& that reflects adversely on them and the
ones they have lost. I think anybody who served in the Army would feel
that way.
Lastly, I could be bitter about how my Army career ended, but I'm not. Not
then, not now. I support veteran's issues, and tried very hard to get my son to accept a service academy appointment, or
failing that, to take ROTC in college, but he declined. I don't miss the
institution, but I do miss the people I served with. Just because a couple
of officers were upset with me a decade ago and in a position to act on it
is no reason to hate the whole Army. I don't think they would've reacted
the way they did had I not been on orders to PCS to Ft. Leavenworth as
cadre there. My battery commander at the time told me that, and I believed
him. If I could, I would go back right now.
To any who have been offended, are angry with me, and to those I served
with and those who serve today, all I can do is give you my support and apologize. I'm very sorry for this turn of events. It has
caused me to re-examine some of the most painful moments of my life; so
much so that I told my son the whole story about the end of my Army
career, and that I was an alcoholic, would always be an alcoholic, and
that he needed to know, since it is hereditary. He was too young to
remember when all of this was going on.
Thank you for this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Howard F. Campbell

=======================================================================================
Dear POW
Network,
This
guestbook entry was very obviously written by a total phony! I checked
the 21 men with the last name
CAMPBELL
listed in the SEAL database. There is only one man whose first name
begins with the letter “W”… and he joined the Teams just before
the end of WWII and served with a UDT. There are two men listed with
middle names beginning with the letter “W”, but neither one is
listed as serving with a SEAL Team… both were UDT, and both joined the
Teams approximately TEN (10) years before the date claimed by the author
of this guestbook posting. There are only three men named CAMPBELL for
whom we have no middle name listed… all three of them joined the Teams
almost a decade AFTER the claimed service dates made by the guestbook
author. NONE of the 21 SEALs with the last name
CAMPBELL
either entered SEAL training or received an assignment to the SEAL Teams
in 1975.
The author of
this guestbook entry opens his commentary by referring to a “team
tattoo on our arms”. There was not then nor is there now any such
thing as a “Team tattoo”. Many SEAL imposters offer tattoos as
evidence that they are actually members of the US Navy’s SEAL Teams.
They take advantage of the fact that most people would not begin to give
serious consideration to obtaining such a tattoo without having
legitimately earned the right to display or wear the symbol. Upon
displaying their tattoos, SEAL imposters often claim to their listeners
that “all of the men in my class got this same tattoo when we
graduated from training”. Others have claimed that a particular tattoo
was one that all the members of their individual SEAL platoon got after
completing a particular deployment, operation, or “mission”.
Time and
again investigators looking into the claims made by SEAL imposters have
answered inquiries that report a man offering or displaying his SEAL
Trident tattoo as “proof” that he was a member of the Navy’s SEAL
Teams. The response has been the same in every case; a tattoo is nothing
more than an indelible picture set into the wearer’s skin. The
government does not issue and does not espouse tattoos of any sort or
kind. Anyone can purchase a tattoo. Anyone can obtain ANY tattoo image
(including any military insignia) if they are willing to spend the
money, and to endure the discomfort of having it pierced into their
skin.
It is perhaps
appropriate to point out that the requirements of Operational Security (OPSEC)
and Personal Security (PERSEC) are not well served if members of an
elite military force like the SEALs are wearing the identifying emblem
of their unit tattooed on their bodies. These are not the freewheeling
days of wooden ships, canvas sails, and sailors wearing exotic tattoos
from unheard-of ports in the primitive
South Sea Islands
. This is the 21st Century, and the modern Navy is a completely
different entity.
When Navy
SEALs go into combat they do not carry identifying documents of any
kind; they don’t carry wallets, I.D. cards, drivers’ licenses,
photographs of wives or girlfriends, notes from friends, letters from
home, paycheck stubs… nothing! With such strict observance being given
to OPSEC and PERSEC by these quiet professionals, the idea of wearing a
SEAL Trident tattoo is completely ridiculous. Yet still the claims of
tattoos as proof of being a SEAL are offered by countless imposters.
OPSEC and
PERSEC are very real concerns, and tattoos – officially classed as
“identifying marks and scars” – pose a real threat to both OPSEC
and PERSEC. For that reason most real SEALs do not wear any tattoos, and
particularly avoid having the SEAL Trident permanently engraved anywhere
on their persons. There is no official ban on tattoos (Trident emblems
of otherwise) in the SEAL Teams. To be sure, some former SEALs do obtain
such a tattoo, small and discretely located, after leaving active
military service, but this is far from “standard procedure”. It is
never something which is offered by a real SEAL as proof of his Team
membership.
I
must also make comment on the obvious illiteracy of the author of this
guestbook entry. More than half of what separates SEALs
from other military men is what is between their ears. SEALs are highly
intelligent. SEAL candidates must meet/exceed a higher threshold
intelligence rating on their military classification exams than any
other job in the Navy before they are even allowed to enter SEAL
training. SEAL training
emphasizes a reliance on their intelligence and initiative to do their
jobs, and that means a better than average ability to communicate
thoughts and ideas with others. The errors evident in the guest book
entry are not solely limited to typographical errors which might result
from a lack of typing skills. The horrendous grammatical errors,
misspellings, and jumbled thoughts/concepts that are expressed in the
entry are not the result of a mind that successfully completed SEAL
training and served with the SEAL Teams. Additionally, the errors made
by that author are not limited to spelling, grammar, and punctuation. He
has also made some significant errors in the way he refers to himself
and to other SEALs; errors that are immediately obvious to any true
member of the Naval Special Warfare community.
The last
SEALs to serve in
Vietnam
left that country in November 1972. Following the signing of the Paris
Peace Accords in January 1973, all
US
armed forces left
Vietnam
on or before 29 March 1973. The only
US
military personnel of any type that remained on Vietnamese soil were the
very few USMC Security Force personnel who were attached to the US
Embassy in
Saigon
. Those US Marines left that facility in April 1975 when the North
Vietnamese took over
Saigon
(in direct violation of the agreements stated in the Paris Peace
Accords). When the SEALs left
Vietnam
in November 1972, no man was left behind…
no SEAL has EVER been left behind… EVER! There were a grand total of
only 49 UDT/SEAL personnel KIA during the entire Vietnam War… we know
them all by name and the details of when/where those deaths occurred. As
I noted, the last SEALs to serve in Vietnam departed that country in
November 1972; anyone claiming to be a SEAL with Vietnam combat
experience who claims he served there in 1975 is not only la blatant
liar, but he is also grossly unaware of the actual history of the US
involvement in Vietnam.
I have
queried numerous SEAL Teammates who served with me during the
Vietnam
years (as well as men who were in the Teams during the 15 years
following that war) regarding the nickname “Flash”. To the best of
their recollection there was NO SEAL who was ever known by that
nickname. The Naval Special Warfare community is a very (VERY) small
one, and everyone knows everyone. The total number of SEALs who served
in
Vietnam
does not exceed 250! The person who penned this guestbook entry was
NEVER a SEAL… NEVER! His claim of being a SEAL is ludicrous, and would
be laughable were it not such a horrendous insult to those of us who ARE
SEALs, and to the memories of our fallen comrades.
I have sent a
copy of this letter to the email address left by the author. I can only
hope that he dares to reply to me personally, and to repeat his false
SEAL claims. I now have TWO (2) contacts with US government officials
who are eager and anxious to assist in rooting out imposters of this
sort; one Special Agent with the FBI and one Special Agent with the
Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS). The Special Agent with
DCIS contacted me by telephone yesterday to inform me that he’d
obtained a confession from the former Sheriff (Williams) who was falsely
claiming to be a SEAL. Charges are pending. I will keep you posted on
any additional information I might learn about W. “FLASH”

If the name you provided was spelled accurately,
we do NOT have a listing in our database for anyone named ANDREW JOSEPH
CAPRELLA. In fact we do not have ANYONE with that last name, or anything
even close in spelling or pronunciation, in our entire database of
nearly 10,000 names!...Not only that, but the number of men with the
Teams who made anywhere near 7 tours in the Republic of Vietnam could be
counted on one hand. Caprella's claims of being a SEAL are absolutely
and completely bogus! Invite the man to contact me directly - a REAL
SEAL. I'd be extremely interested to hear the details of his claimed
time as a SEAL instructor and his incredible record of seven (!) tours
to Vietnam as a SEAL...
I would make the following personal comment
regarding Caprella's claims... Jesse Ventura (whose legal name
when he was in the Teams was Jim Janos) went through training only
three months ahead of me. His class and mine overlapped for that
period of time, and we lived in the same small barracks building
together. We had the same instructors through all of BUD/S
training, and though we served on different Teams, we had many of the
same close associates. In all of that time there was NEVER any
instructor, or any SEAL serving in ANY CAPACITY by the name of
Andrew Joseph Caprella... NEVER!

Senior Cheif Petty Officer Arthur Carrier, shown in 1988, left Bogalusa
and became a Navy SEAL.
Bogalusan may be only veteran to serve whole career deployed
By Jacob Brooks
The Daily News
BOGALUSA - On a gold chain around Arthur Gene Carrier's neck lies a
pointed tooth about half the size of a cell phone. A combat buddy gave
him the tooth nearly 40 years ago in Vietnam.
"It's a whale tooth," said Carrier, who recently turned 60.
"It's my good luck charm."
In the center of the tooth is embedded a black pearl. "A dentist
from Thailand put it in," said Carrier.
It's a unique artifact, but then again, so is Carrier, who joined the
U.S. Navy in 1966. Forty years and 68 countries later, this Bogalusa man
has returned home.
"Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer and Mark Twain would be envious because they
just saw the Mississippi River," said Carrier, a grizzled war
veteran who has sworn an oath to not talk about most of the military
experiences he's had.
"My history was mostly covert," he said.
He was a Navy SEAL sniper, served four years in Vietnam, has been
deployed to Africa, Asia, Central America and worked with virtually
every hard-core special forces unit on the planet: Army Green Beret,
Marine Force Recon, French Foreign Legion, the White Horse and White
Tiger Divisions out of South Korea and the Queen's Gurkhas, who,
pound-for-pound, are the best soldiers in the world, Carrier said.
He hesitates to call working with the elite groups a treat because
"ain't nothing a treat about a conflict."
Rather, it was an honor to serve on missions with the world's best, he
said.
But now, Carrier has a new mission in life - taking care of his aging
mother.
"Now my mission is to help my old treasure," he said as he
strolled into The Daily News for an interview last week with his
76-year-old mother, Vera Carrier, who suffers from severe diabetes. She
was in a coma when Carrier returned home in 2005 after a career in the
Navy and Military Sealift Command (MSC), the ocean transportation
provider for the Department of Defense.
Carrier's journey started a few months after graduation from Bogalusa
High in 1965. As he saw it at the time, "I had two choices in life:
the military or the paper mill."
He chose the military, and by February of 1966, he was in Navy boot camp
in San Diego. He proceeded to survival school, jump school, special
sniper training and, of course, Navy SEAL school.
"That's where they separate the boys from the girls," Carrier
said, adding he remembers "hell week" most of all. "I fit
in the military like a duck to water," he said.
After training, he was sent to Vietnam, where he served four, one-year
terms from 1966 to 1970.
After Vietnam, Carrier was stationed in the Philippines and later Japan,
where he has lived for most of the last 40 years. In that time, he's
been to 68 countries Â- many he was deployed to for secret missions,
others he traveled to on his own dime. In addition to Vietnam, he
received decorations for Somalia, Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He
retired from the Navy in 1988 as a senior chief petty officer, and went
to work for MSC, remaining overseas.
Carrier has visited Bogalusa off and on during his 40 years abroad, but
as far as he knows he is the only veteran to spend his entire career -
with the exception of the his first-year training - deployed. A
lieutenant in the Navy's public affairs division said he could not
verify if Carrier was the only person to achieve that.
In a written statement about his career, Carrier said his reason for
staying 40 years abroad could best be summed up in an old military
saying: "Out on the sharp, cutting edge for peace."
When asked what his best and worse moments were in the military, Carrier
had to think a long time about the answer.
"There are so many good ones and so many bad ones," he said,
seemingly on the verge of wanting to recount them all.
His worst day, however, was about five years ago when he had to leave
Bogalusa while his brother remained here with terminal cancer. Carrier
said he knew he would never see his brother alive again. Still, he took
off his whale tooth, and put it around his brother's neck.
"I took it off one time in 40 years," he said. "After he
died, his wife gave it back to me."
While Carrier has enough war stories to fill a book, he doesn't boast.
He didn't want his awards named in this article, and there are plenty.
"I'm no better than anyone else who has served their country,"
he said. "I have 36 friends up there on the wall in
Washington."
The kid who grew up on Spring Valley Road (now called Knapp Thomas Road)
and joined the military at 18 has come a long way.
For now, though, Carrier stays at home and help takes care of mom, who
said she is doing a lot better since her son came back about two years
ago.
A normal day nowadays, Carrier said, is staying close to mom, who has to
take a blood thinner and has a risk of bleeding to death if she falls
and has a bad cut.
"We've gradually worked on her strength," said Carrier.
"She's had a tough two years."
The two go out to eat often, since Carrier really doesn't cook much, he
said.
"I'm more of a butler," he said.
In the statement Carrier wrote, he posed the question: If you had the
chance to serve your country again for 40 years, what would you do?
"Give me 20 minutes to pack my clothes," he said.

Teen accused of faking Air Force service
The Associated Press
Posted : Friday Sep 5, 2008 8:37:10 EDT
CROSSVILLE, Tenn. A California teen has been arrested and charged
with criminal impersonation in eastern Tennessee for allegedly fooling
businesses into thinking he was an airman to get discounts and other
perks.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department arrested 19-year-old Damian
Paul Castillo of Anderson, Calif., last week on 25 counts of fraudulent
use of a credit card, six counts of violation of the bad check law and
one count of criminal impersonation.
Sheriff’s Investigator Ben Waller said Castillo is accused of passing
himself off as a member of the Air Force by wearing a military uniform.
He’s also accused of bilking nine businesses out of more than $14,102.
Investigators say the Air Force confirmed he had never enlisted.
Some of the alleged scams included getting plane tickets upgraded,
shopping tax-free or getting a military discount. Investigators said he
is also accused of using a credit card that was not valid and writing
bad checks from another fraudulent account. |
Phony Vet Pleads Guilty to Fraud
November 11, 2008
McClatchy-Tribune
Information Services
The man who ran a credit card scam on local
merchants and who drew tax exemptions and active military discounts
for goods by posing as a Soldier, even though he has never served in
the military, pleaded guilty Oct. 21 in a Tennessee courtroom.
Investigators said Damian Paul Castillo, 19, who
listed a Haston Rd., Pikeville, Tenn., address when arrested, bilked
local merchants out of thousands of dollars in goods, tax exemptions
and discounts normally reserved for active duty military personnel.
He was arrested in August and charged with 25
counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, six counts of violation of
the bad check law and criminal impersonation.
Castillo, represented by Assistant Public Defender
Cynthia Lyons at Cumberland County Criminal Court, entered guilty
pleas to Judge David Patterson.
Castillo pleaded guilty to fraudulent use of a
debit card more than $1,000, and received a three-year prison
sentence. He pleaded guilty to one count of fraudulent use of a credit
card more than $500 and received a two-year sentence to be served
concurrently, or at the same time.
He pleaded guilty to six counts of fraudulent use
of a debit card less than $500 and received an 11-month and 29-day
sentence, all to be served concurrently.
He also pleaded guilty to a new charge of statutory
rape and received a two-year prison sentence which will be served with
the other sentences.
"He was passing himself off as a member of the
U.S. Air Force," Cumberland County Sheriff's Investigator Ben
Waller said in August after Castillo was arrested. It is uncertain as
to whether Castillo actually told anyone he was a member of the
military, but his presence wearing a uniform led business owners of
mom and pop stores in the community and some larger retail outlets to
believe so.
Between Aug. 23 and his arrest on Aug. 30, Castillo
is credited with bilking nine local businesses out of $14,102. He
formerly worked at a fast food place, according to Waller, and because
he operated a cash register, he learned how to bypass security
measures for credit or debit cards.
Waller said that Castillo would present a credit
card to make a purchase, claim the card was defective, take a keypad
from the clerk and punch in a series of numbers that only provided him
a balance on the card.
Clerks would think that he had completed the
transaction, would close out the sale and hand over the goods, not
knowing that the sale had not been debited against the card.
A suspicious clerk at Caruther's Grocery caught on
to what Castillo was doing and called the sheriff's department. He was
arrested a short time later at Fairyland Tobacco and Beverage where he
had conducted a similar transaction.
A native of California, Castillo reportedly
followed a teenage girl to Bledsoe County. The girl had spent some
time in California with relatives and during that time, the teen met
Castillo. When the teen returned home to Tennessee, Castillo
reportedly followed her to the community. At the time of his arrest,
Bledsoe County authorities were also looking into his activities in
that county.

A Loma Linda man walking to Sacramento
in an effort to get the POW/MIA flag flown year-round on state buildings
will meet with state veterans officials despite acknowledging that he
lied about having served in the Marine Corps.
Gary Cherms, 58, said Wednesday in a
telephone interview that he lied to the American Legion and to The

| CHESSER,
BILLY HUGH JR |
02/2009 |
El Lago, TX |
Claims Navy Seal in Vietnam and received a
scar on his face from a grenade.
In 2007 I contacted Robert Russell with the U.S.
Naval Special Warfare Archives on June 29th and received a reply by
e-mail that there has never been a Navy Seal with the name of Billy
Hugh Chesser Jr. As of 02/20/2009, he is still
claiming that he was a Navy Seal.
|
As
you have already been informed by Mr. R.D. Russell of the Naval
Special Warfare Archives, the claims of being a Navy SEAL which were
offered to you and your fellow officers by Mr. BILLY
HUGH CHESSER JR. are absolutely without merit. Mr. CHESSER
is not now and never was a member of the Naval Special Warfare (NSW)
Teams (UDT or SEAL). The SEAL Database now being used and expanded
by the US Navy was originally created by Mr. R.D. Russell (a former
Navy SEAL), and there is no one who is a greater or more informed
expert on the matter.
As
neither the POW Network nor I, myself, are trained in any law
enforcement activities or hold any legal or law enforcement
credentials, there is nothing more that can be done by us at this
time. If the man has transgressed the laws of the land or specific
rules/restrictions where he resides, then it is up to the local law
enforcement officials there to ensure that he is taken to task for
those transgressions. Frustrating as this situation is for you, it
is also highly frustrating for us to hear of this situation and
still admit that there is nothing we can do beyond informing you of
the truth regarding Mr. CHESSER’s
claimed military credentials.
....
I
wish you the very best in handling this situation, and suspect that
it will soon fall within the purview of your local courts to
administer corrective actions with regard to Mr. CHESSER’s
actions.
Very
Respectfully,
Steve

Navy vets say
officer isn't SEAL as claimed
Police lieutenant
says he's not listed because he was in classified unit
BY STEPHEN DYER
Beacon Journal staff writer
LAWRENCE TWP.: Become a U.S. Navy SEAL and you join one of the
military's tightest fraternities.
Some classes of SEAL
trainees have had a dropout rate as high as 90 percent during the 17
weeks of rigorous training. Since 1962, fewer than 10,000 men have
completed the course that even has claimed some lives.
For the graduates, being a member of one of the world's elite
fighting forces becomes their essence.
That's why when
people falsely claim to be SEALs -- as some allege a Lawrence Township
police officer is doing -- former SEALs like Ron Relf take it
personally.
``A lot of our
teammates have given their lives to serve with honor and integrity,''
said Relf, 49, a retired Denver police officer now living near
Philadelphia. ``These (fakes) are trading in on the good reputation of
the guys we knew.''
False claims have
become an epidemic of sorts, according to SEALs and their devoted
followers. So much so that a group has formed a ``SEAL fraud squad'' at http://www.cyberseals.org
on the Internet.
The organization
meticulously maintains a database of SEALs dating back to the group's
earliest days. The mission -- catching fakes -- lacks the danger of a
classified incursion, but members attack with the same signature SEAL
ferocity.
``Ever since the
Roman Empire, we've had fake veterans,'' said Steven Waterman, a former
Navy photographer who administers the Web site. ``But with the Internet,
it's easier to catch them.''
Navy spokesman Lt.
Douglas Spencer said ``something pops up every day'' about falsified
military records.
The SEAL group has
caught university professors, school superintendents, police officers,
customs agents and medical doctors lying about their past.
Officer targeted
Their latest target is one of northern Stark County's most
respected police officers: retired Lawrence Township Lt. William
Chevrier, who since 1982 has told people he was a SEAL. He has worn the
SEAL trident insignia pin on his police uniform. His SEAL claim was so
well known, it was one of those things people around town just knew
about him.
``It's
just understood,'' explained Northwest Schools Superintendent Dennis
Lambes.
Chevrier,
58, is a resource officer in the district and is working to obtain a
grant so that an officer can be stationed permanently at the buildings.
But
Waterman says he has no record of Chevrier ever being a SEAL. Neither do
naval special forces officials.
``He's
not in our database,'' said Chief Petty Officer Todd Willebrand. ``We've
got a list of everyone who's ever gone through SEAL training. We've
never had the database be wrong.''
Chevrier
counters that when he was in SEAL Team 1 between 1962 and 1966, it was a
deeply classified outfit.
``I
didn't exist,'' he said.
He said that's why
he left the Navy in 1966 -- he couldn't be promoted because of his
classified status.
Willebrand
said whether a person is a SEAL is not classified.
Chevrier
said he has heard questions about his military record for about six
months.
``So
I didn't turn up in a database,'' he said. ``I know what I know. That's
all I can say.''
As
for the ``fraud squad,'' it's not always right, Chevrier said.
``They're
out to get people running around saying things,'' he said. ``I've run
into two or three (legitimate SEALs) who said it happened to them.''
Chevrier
declined to produce a copy of his military discharge papers to the Akron
Beacon Journal. He said it won't say on the records that he was a SEAL
because of his classified status.
Spencer
said it could take as long as two weeks to confirm Chevrier's military
service.
Willebrand
said most fake SEALs claim they were part of a secret, classified
class that doesn't appear on any records.
``This `secret
class' had about 20,000 graduates,'' he said. ``That's a pretty big
class.''
Reason for claims
Willebrand said people who falsely claim to be SEALs use it to
advance themselves. Some even use it to threaten people.
For example, they
warn, ``I'm a SEAL and can kill you with one finger,'' he said.
``It's an
epidemic,'' Willebrand said. ``A lot of them use it to pick up girls or
get promoted in jobs.''
One admitted fake
SEAL -- William T. McCabe, 45, of Mount Vernon -- said he started
bragging over a couple of beers with friends, though he said he hasn't
made the claim for more than a year. He said he had worked with some
SEALs while he was stationed near their training base at Coronado,
Calif.
``I felt awful
about'' telling the story, he said yesterday. ``I want to correct
everything I did. I felt horrible about it. I just admired what they did
so much. I hang my head in shame.''
Waterman said
McCabe's apology was admirable.
``Now he can get on
with his life,'' he said.
Those
who work with Chevrier in Stark County said whether he is a SEAL doesn't
really affect his job performance.
``He's
a great cop. If your child is missing, he's the first guy I'd go to,''
said Massillon Municipal Judge Edward J. Elum, himself a Navy veteran.
``We'd share war stories together. He never told me he was a SEAL.''
Elum
said Chevrier also never claimed it on the witness stand.
Lawrence
Township recently rehired Chevrier to conduct part-time investigative
work. Trustee Marvin Hardgrove expressed concern when he learned about
the discrepancy between Chevrier's claim and the Navy's records.
``I'll
take a look at it,'' he said.
Chevrier's
supervisor, Police Chief Charles ``Chip'' McCullough, however, said the
SEAL claim doesn't matter.
``Whether he was or
wasn't a SEAL is immaterial,'' he said. ``It's not a job requirement.''
Former SEAL Steve
Nash, 61, of California, said there's another problem with fakers: They
can cost taxpayers money.
``There are a lot of
phonies taking advantage of the (Veterans Administration) system,'' he
said. ``A lot of taxpayer money is being spent on people who don't
deserve it. If the rest of the military had the system we do, we could
save taxpayers a bunch of money and get treatment for guys who deserve
it.''
Relf said some
fakers go to the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C., and pass
themselves off as SEALs. Some even adopt the names of dead SEAL team
members.
He has a simple
response.
``At some point,
we'll have contact with those guys,'' Relf said calmly. ``And it won't
be a good day for them.''

I
have personally been involved in answering queries about Mr. CHEVRIER’s
false SEAL claims since 2001. At that time he was a law enforcement
officer and had reportedly begun wearing a Navy SEAL Trident insignia on
his uniform. These reports were substantiated by photographs showing the
military SEAL insignia above Mr. CHEVRIER’s shirt pocket, and
if I recall correctly there was also at least one newspaper article
which included both photographs and textual references to his SEAL
claims.
I can state conclusively that WILLIAM S. CHEVRIER has
NEVER COMPLETED SEAL training, and he is not now, nor was he ever a Navy
SEAL or a Navy UDT “Frogman”.
The important point to consider in this matter is that Mr. CHEVRIER has
presented .... false information. My own personal experiences in dealing
with inquiries/reports of his false SEAL claims have been on-going for
nearly a decade, and it is clear that he has no intentions of willingly
ending his masquerade. Whether his original motivation was for
employment purposes, monetary gain, increased social status,
“dating” opportunities, or personal/public notoriety, it is clear
that his personal ethics have not prevented him making these false
statements about his background and training/skill credentials. If the
man’s personal ethics do not prevent him from offering such blatantly
false information about his background, then your employer must ask
himself what other false statements Mr. CHEVRIER might have made,
or might be willing to make. A willingness to give false testimony or
offer false information is one of the worst personality traits that a
law enforcement official or a security force employee could possibly
present. The potential for negative legal ramifications are huge!
Thank you again for your concern in this matter, and for your assistance
in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams. If I can be of any
further assistance to you in this matter, please contact me at your
convenience.
Respectfully,

The Seven Faces of “Dr.” Churchill
Academia’s everyman.
Does Ward Churchill even exist?
..... Churchill has spoken of the firsthand trauma of battle
service as a combat veteran, both as a paratrooper and as a sniper —
among the most hazardous of corps in the United States military. Once
again, there is no such evidence that he served in any capacity other
than what his official duties in a motor pool and as a projectionist
entailed.
Embarrassed officials claim Churchill was sought after by other
universities — so they had to reel in this trophy catch before he got
away — but no one can find any proof other than Churchill’s own
mendacious claims.
No one knows what to make of his various arrests, boasts of bomb-making,
trip to Libya, angry and traumatized ex-wives, braggadocio about petty
vandalism, tales of phone threats, and the variety of other sordid
stories that surround this fabricated man. Churchill’s presence on
campus is like the weaving driver who is pulled over by the state
police, who quickly find no license, registration, or insurance, but
plenty of warrants — and thus wonder how many other paroled miscreants
they’ve missed out there, one accident away from being a
public-relations nightmare.
So, again, does this Ward Churchill even exist?
Of course not: His faces are made up of whole cloth..... |

New Churchill Fraud Uncovered
Recently Found Evidence Suggests Ward Churchill Appropriated Another
Veteran's Vietnam Experience
PirateBallerina is in possession of evidence that shows Ward Churchill
appropriated the military experience of someone else and claimed it as
his own. During a 1993 interview, Churchill gave supposed recollections
of his actions and thoughts from his time in Vietnam that our evidence
shows were in fact stolen from a quote by an anonymous soldier in an
essay published a year earlier by a different author......
