THOSE CLAIMING MEDAL OF HONOR
NOTE: In 1996 HLI Lordship Industries (at the time, the OFFICIAL USG contractor for the Medal of Honor) admitted selling THREE HUNDRED unauthorized medals for $75.00 each from 1991-1994. They were fined $80,000. NOT ALL of those medals have been recovered. Offenders in possession of an unauthorized medal can be arrested, fined (up to $10,000) and jailed (up to a year). It is the only military medal that CANNOT be bought, sold, bartered, traded, collected, auctioned, exchanged.... EVERY Medal of Honor is awarded by act of Congress. Less than 150 REAL Medal of Honor recipients are alive today.

Blades, Christabal C. 10/2006
05/2007
Brown Mills, New Jersey Blades is known to have posed as a SFC with Senior wings, Drill Sergeant patch, 101st ABN combat patch, Ranger tab, Scuba badge, CIB, foreign jump wings on his BDU uniform as a member of the 404th Civil Affairs Battalion in 1994. At the last minute he was tasked with running BRM at a range (Due to his apparent qualifications) about five minutes into his class even the Pvt’s were scratching their heads. NCO's and Officers determined that he was a phony who could not answer  questions about his qualifications. The Commander declined to pursue him and allowed him to transfer out of the unit.
He then showed up in the 78th Div at Dix and was reduced from a SFC to a PVT  Feb 2001, after assaulting a CPT and a SSG while attempting to steal his MRPJ (201 file) after being questioned about multiple questionable entries for training, Badges and Medals.
In March of 2002 he showed up at the 404th Civil Affairs Battalion looking AGAIN for a position in the unit.
In June of 2002, the 1079th GSU 1SG’s office interviewed Mr. Blades who was now a MSG with Master wings (with a combat jump now), Ranger TAB, SF tab, Free fall wings, Drill Sergeant patch, Air Assault wings, CIB, Scuba, 2nd Ranger BN combat patch. After a few questions he asked to use the latrine, He climbed out the window and took off running. Before we could catch him, he was in his car and took off.
About 6 months later he apparently re-enlisted into the National Guard 1/114th Mech Inf in NJ (all of his units seemed to be in NJ near Ft Dix, NJ.) He was wearing the rank of an SFC and told the unit his MPRJ 201 file was lost when he mobilized for Iraq earlier. They kept him until his one year enlistment ran out two months later. He failed to show up for his drills after receiving a call to bring in documents showing his awards.

Recently  some Soldiers from Southern PA reported contact. He has been seen with ID cards for MAJ, LTC and was seen in dress blues with the rank of BG.

" If this individual somehow gets deployed with our Soldiers then someone will be killed or hurt badly depending on this phony, its bad enough that he may have already retired with all those phony documents or will retire soon. He seems to have stolen awards and documents from others to back up his claims but after a good look, they fail to support his claims. I hope that someone out there can do what the Army and CID failed to do. Thanks."

In his attempt to take credit for others achievements, he lost track of what countries he was in and what awards he received if any. The FBI as well as the Dept of Homeland security are now interested. He is becoming famous not to mention the folks around Fort Dix are on the look out for him to return.

Mr. Blades has been doing his best to stay out of jail at Fort Dix by postponing his sentencing trial. He is now being evaluated to see if he is competent to be sentenced to 6 months in jail.

Last legal rank held (E-1/PV1).

Investigation documents conclude with

quote
... he provided several false sets of promotion orders abd award certificates. Further investigation revealed the SFC BLADES had committed these acts at previous duty stations; however, as soon as someone would question him, he would transfer units.

...  Nobody seems to have the power to remove him  permanently from the service and his forgeries of 201 documents have been found out in the CID report. He appears to have mental health issues and should be considered an unstable individual who should never be given a weapon or taken to a live firing range.

Blake, David 06/2006 NY By John Hoellwarth
(Marine/Air Force) Times staff writer
There was something odd about the way 1st Sgt. David Blake ditty-bopped through the pedestrian traffic of New York City’s Times Square in his dress blues.

Reserve Gunnery Sgt. Alex Kitsakos, a New York City cop drilling at the Corps’ public affairs office in Manhattan over Memorial Day weekend, said he “noticed someone, not a Marine, but someone in a Marine uniform walking with no character, no bearing.”

Kitsakos called out to the first sergeant, who he saw only from the back through the pedestrian traffic. Blake stopped and turned to face the gunny, who said he knew right then that Blake was a poser.

He was sporting six hash marks on each sleeve and three or four days’ growth on his face, Kitsakos said. On his uniform, he wore gold jump wings, the Navy Cross, Silver Star, three Purple Hearts and a single Combat Action Ribbon atop his 27-award stack.

Things already weren’t adding up. But when Blake addressed the gunny as “sir,” the faker sealed his fate.

Kitsakos said Blake initially tried to say he was assigned to one of the Navy ships in town for Fleet Week. When asked what ship, Blake hesitated.

“I looked him in the eye and said, ‘You’re not a Marine,’” Kitsakos said. “I was livid.”

Kitsakos pulled Blake off the street into an Internet café and gave him a tongue lashing that ended when Blake surrendered his cover, dress blue coat and driver’s license. When Blake tried to explain that he runs a youth organization whose members wear the uniforms, Kitsakos told him he could pick up his ID at the Marine Corps’ office after Fleet Week if he brought all the youths — and their uniforms — with him.

The irate gunny sent Blake back out onto the street wearing dress blue pants and a T-shirt.

“You know how many people have died for this uniform?” Kitsakos asked. “If I find anyone else in this uniform as an impostor, they can expect to be walking around New York in their underwear.”

When contacted by Marine Corps Times, Blake said he didn’t want to talk about the incident.

Kitsakos called the FBI. Then he hung Blake’s coat — the trophy of his fresh kill — in the Marine public affairs office.

Between the public’s increased wartime reverence for valor and the ease of ordering proof of combat heroism over the Internet, FBI Special Agent Tom Cottone, who has been busting phonies since 1995, said fakers now are “coming out of the woodwork.”

The FBI has 20 cases pending against military fakers. This year alone, the bureau has launched a dozen investigations, which, if the pace keeps up, would double last year’s caseload.

And a lot of them seem to be Marines. Since January, at least eight cases of Marines embellishing their rank and awards or civilians impersonating Marines have been busted by newspapers, Marines or other freelance fraud-finders. Those who observe the practice suggest there are likely hundreds more.

AE is the rate skill AVIATION ELECTRICIANS MATE

.... If the name you provided is spelled correctly, I do NOT find a listing in the SEAL Database (end of WWII to the Present Day) for anyone named FARON TAKAO BOREHAM. I have also examined possible alternate spellings, and names with similar pronunciations without finding any that might be applicable.

Unless he has undertaken the unlikely action of a legal name change (an action for which there would be evidence in the form of court documentation) since his claimed attendance at BUD/S training, and based upon the information you have provided, I can state conclusively that FARON TAKAO BOREHAM has NEVER COMPLETED SEAL training, and he is not now, nor was he ever a Navy SEAL or a Navy UDT “Frogman”.

When members of the Naval Special Warfare community meet others who claim similar service, but whom they do not recognize, there is a conversational exchange of information that establishes the bona fides of each to the other. There is no set formula for this exchange, nor for the information that is exchanged, but it ALWAYS takes place, and the REAL Naval Special Warfare members can ALWAYS spot a phony as a result of this exchange. If you have an opportunity to speak with the man at some point in the future, I might suggest that you to ask Mr. BOREHAM these questions:

(1) Since there is no listing in the SEAL Database for the name you are currently using, WHAT NAME DID YOU USE during SEAL training?

(2) What was his BUD/S Class Number? (NB: No SEAL ever forgets the class number he shouted all day long, every day, for 6 months)

(3) Where did his training take place? (NB: Training has been conducted at several locations over the years; different portions in different places)

(4) When did he graduate from Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training? (i.e. a specific graduation DATE)

There are many other questions which could be asked to further establish the level of veracity or untruth regarding his claims, such as asking for the names of other members of his graduating class, but those basic questions are absolutes. The answers to those questions are totally UNCLASSIFIED, and every real SEAL will gladly provide that substantiating information upon request, although you will be very likely be told that the information is either classified or sensitive and cannot be provided.

I might suggest that you also ask Mr. BOREHAM to specifically identify WHICH SEAL Team(s) he served on, and when. I am in direct contact with several hundred of my SEAL Teammates whose collective experience covers virtually all time periods from the Korean War to the present; I can quickly contact those individuals to verify any specific names, events, or other claims offered by Mr. BOREHAM. If he feels that his name has somehow been mistakenly omitted from the SEAL records, I’d be pleased to speak with him and hear details of his service which would serve to validate his claims. The Director of the Naval Special Warfare Archives – a close personal friend and SEAL Teammate – is only a phone call away and standing by to amend the records if this is ever found to be true. However, I estimate that I’ve made the same offer to more than 5,000 SEAL imposters in the last eight years, and none of them ever turned out to be a valid SEAL. If Mr. BOREHAM subsequently suggests to you or others you know that he has contacted me, the Department of the Navy, or “the government” in some way and “straightened things out”, I’d be very interested in hearing from you again.

No one gets to the SEAL Teams without first completing BUD/S Training. There are records of every man who has qualified for the title of “SEAL”; there have been and will continue to be secret missions, but there are NO secret SEALs… we know them all.

Thank you again for your concern in this matter, and for your assistance in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams. If I can be of any further assistance to you in this matter, please contact me at your convenience.

Respectfully,

... During basic training at Fort Lewis, he got his GED and was selected to go to Fort Benning, Ga., for Special Forces training. After successfully completing that course, he shipped out to Vietnam.

During the war, Mr. Bowen took part in more than two dozen battlefield engagements and was injured by shrapnel. He saw close friends die, including one killed by "friendly fire."

"He was pretty young to experience the things he had to see," said his father, a retired vice president of human resources at Boeing's commercial airplane group. "He went through some tough times. He was confused."

Mr. Bowen told Lombardi that in the years after the war he wandered a lot. He hitchhiked around the United States and camped in woods, sometimes for months at a time.

In Florida, he used his parachuting skills to learn advanced skydiving skills. That helped him eventually get his life together. He became a skilled rigger of parachutes and started a parachute-supply store in Eloy, Ariz.

In the early 1990s, he talked his dad into doing a parachute jump, tied in tandem with another instructor. He filmed his father as they dropped to earth together.

But in the mid-'90s, after seven friends died in skydiving accidents within a year, Mr. Bowen sold the business.

He took a job tending a store. But that went badly when he was forced to shoot an armed robber, an incident that triggered anew his post-traumatic stress disorder, ....

Bowen, Ricky 03/2000 .

Rickey is passing himself off as a ranch/farm hand/manager. His resume included the time in the Navy, then using the GI Bill, getting a double ag degree from the Univ. of  Georgia. (They of course have no record of him they can find  either.) After completing his education he states he managed a  ranch/farm in Texas for eleven years only to have the owner die and  the son, who was a Lt. Cmdr. in the Navy sold the place but gave him  a letter of recommendation.  Rickey claims to be quite well off,  mostly from being the only surviving member (how convenient!)  of his family, his Dad having been a Navy Rear Admiral. (Not only  that he claims to be the great grandson of Geronimo.) He is married, and has three kids (the  boys all named after SEAL buddies.)  He had a bit of a punctuality problem. He stated that his team was notorious for tardiness and delighted in keeping the submarines
waiting for days at the pick up points. Another highly questionable statement he made was that when  he was made team leader, his ID card was changed from E-5 to O-3 so the team would have someone with officer rank. His wife once, in the  presence of the emergency room staff that was treating him that he  had been bit multiple times by poisonous snakes while carrying out  work in the jungles of Vietnam. Concerning him being injured, he  was hit from behind in a car accident by a guy coming from nowhere  and was apparently ran over be a bunch of cattle (no one saw the  accident.) Other tales from the boat. He mentioned getting to fly in the  backseat of F-14's numerous times (being he was so close  with some of the pilots.) At the same time he mentioned it was  common practice for the boat captain to hold the team in the brig as  the best means of controlling such a tough group of hombres.

At least seven women whom Bradford has defrauded are known.  And he usually took money from them, too.

LIE DETECTORS Larry Bailey, Chuck and Mary Schantag, Steve Waterman and others are on a nationwide mission to expose those who exaggerate or falsely claim military service.

[FINAL Edition]

The Sun - Baltimore , Md.

Author:

Dan Fesperman

Date:

Jul 5, 2001

....Bailey has been busy lately tracking down details of a Baltimore case, involving 37-year-old construction worker Timothy Warren Bradford, who he says claims to have won several medals and to have been wounded in several wars while fighting as a SEAL. He has also said he is a Naval Intelligence operative, and a graduate of the U.S, Naval Academy . All three claims are false.

But they've helped gain favors and affection from a string of women, Bailey says. "He is truly a predator," Bailey says. "He beds these women, he takes their money. He gives them all kinds of problems."

The Sun spoke to nine people, including several former girlfriends, who've listened to Bradford 's boasts and seen his various uniforms and medals. Each asked that their names not be used, saying they feared his temper.

According to the military records section of the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis , Bradford 's only actual time in the armed forces was a seven-and-a-half month hitch in the Marine Corps when he was 18. He was discharged in December 1982 - nearly 19 years ago - before completing infantry training school at Camp Lejeune , N.C. The center can't release the nature of his discharge without his permission.

Bradford did not respond to messages left for him. George M. Oswinkle, a Baltimore attorney who has represented Bradford in the past, said he also could not reach Bradford . ....

-------------------------------------

The Baltimore Sun article from 2001 (above)  that will give you an idea what the guy did in the Baltimore area.  Since then, he has dropped the SEAL claims and has been everything from a Naval Intelligence Officer to a CIA operative to an Army Ranger captain/helicopter pilot/Green Beret to a neurosurgeon.

-------------------------------------------------

..... he wore  a ball cap with the Ranger on the front. Black and yellow in color and just like the Ranger tab.  He claimed he was a Ranger with "2nd or 3rd Bat" as he put it.  He had a leather jacket with large letters "Ranger" across the back.  He stated he was an officer with the Rangers (MI type). He claimed he was in Somalia (Blackhawk Down) and was in the same room as the soldier that was hit and bled to death. Claims a DSC awarded by Bill Clinton.  He talks about SEARS (SIC) school...thought it was escape and evasion.  Anyway, he stated he was seriously wounded during the operation and is medically retired.

--------------------------------------------------

06/2009   Timothy Bradford aka Tim Genivicia.  He now  claims he was in the Army 19 years Special Ops. He claims  he has a
medical discharge.

08/2009 - Tim Bradford a.k.a Tim Genivicia represented himself on several occasions as a former member of the United States Army Special Forces and he specifically stated “Green Beret”. He went to state that he was seriously wounded during combat operations in  Iraq .

08/2009 - He was recently terminated from Fascan a  Baltimore  company.

10/15/2009 -  He HAS BEEN TERMINATED by Material Handling Systems in Dania, FL.. He  WAS  Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

Tim claims that he has an identical twin brother that is six minutes younger than him and that all the bad things were done by him.

Bradford, William C 12/2005 IN
December 4, 2005

Ruth Holladay
Truth comes out about professor's background
William C. Bradford has resigned as an associate professor at Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis, effective Jan. 1.
He was featured in this space June 26, when he claimed that a faculty committee had voted against him for tenure.
Bradford, 39, maintained that two left-leaning professors were leading the charge for political reasons. They disliked him because he was an Army veteran who supported the war, he said.
One of Bradford's allies, Professor Henry C. Karlson, pointed out that Bradford was the real deal -- awarded the Silver Star and a major in the Special Forces. Bradford said he was in the infantry and military intelligence. He fought in Desert Storm and Bosnia, he said.
On the law school's Web site and its Viewbook, Bradford was profiled as being in the Army infantry from 1990 to 2001. He wore a Silver Star lapel pin around campus. He had a major's gold-leaf insignia plate on his vehicle.
After my column ran portraying Bradford as a victim of a politically correct agenda, I was contacted by retired Army Lt. Col. Keith R. Donnelly, a recent law school graduate, West Point graduate and Gulf War veteran.
Donnelly had long been suspicious of Bradford's background, he said. What really piqued his attention was the Silver Star claim -- "it is a pretty high award for valor, and not many were awarded in Desert Storm."
Independently, Donnelly and I requested Bradford's service record from the Army. It showed he was in the Army Reserve from Sept. 30, 1995, to Oct 23, 2001. He was discharged as a second lieutenant. He had no active duty. He was in military intelligence, not infantry. He received no awards.
Meanwhile, Bradford promoted himself. He blogged on the law school's student Web site. He did radio interviews. He went national on "The O'Reilly Factor." David Horowitz, a champion for conservatives, took up his cause.
When I asked Bradford in late summer about the discrepancy between his record and his claims, he responded with a story that he said could not be made public.
In September, Bradford admitted on the law school blog that he had been assuming names and posting comments in support of himself.
Then The Chronicle for Higher Education, in a long article, reported that Bradford said he received no military decorations. He maintained that he was a major, however.
Meanwhile, law school bloggers hammered away at Bradford's credibility. Bradford, formerly a vigorous participant, shut up.
His resignation came as no surprise.
I asked him Wednesday what he would do. He said he had a deal in the works and could discuss it after Dec. 15.
"This is all very sad," said Karlson, who considers himself Bradford's friend. Karlson believes the votes against Bradford had nothing to do with his record. Everyone believed he was a decorated vet.
He also confirmed what others in academia have told me: Universities don't check every detail in resumes. "I don't think that anyone comes off looking very good in this," he said.
That includes me.

Ohio Bragg heads local American Legion Post 24 honor guard for funerals and is in charge of folding and presenting the flag to the family of deceased veterans.

One of Bragg's jobs is to decide who DOES and DOES NOT receive a military honors funeral.

Full military honors HAVE reportedly been given for the death of  a man with only 2 years ROTC - with NO military time. Decision based on "friendship" and not eligibility!?

He claims he served in Vietnam.

2009 - Once again claiming Vietnam Veteran to benefit from Recognition by the city at their annual veterans event.

Served August 12 1955 until August 12 1961 in the USMC Reserve. Discharged as Private First Class. NPRC notes "No Active Duty other than for training purposes."

The record clarifies Bragg's 6 year term of service in the USMCR but ONLY the final 6 months of the enlistment (2/28/61 - 8/12/61) fall during American Legion eligibility requirements and the document states NO ACTIVE DUTY OTHER THAN FOR TRAINING PURPOSES.." Unless Bragg can show PROOF of any other ACDUTRA on or after 02/28/61 - he is INELIGIBLE for membership in the American Legion! He  IS Eligible for SONS of the LEGION.

R.L. Brendle -- 1928-2003

Master Sgt. R.L. Brendle, 75, of Cheyenne, died Dec. 19 at home with his family present.
He was an Honored 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Freemason.
Born in Franklin, N.C., in the Smoky Mountains, Brendle's father passed away when he was 15. So he left home to go to Atlanta to draw cartoons for the newspaper, having only onion sandwiches to eat. Later, he joined the Merchant Marines and served proudly in World War II, receiving the World War II Victory Medal and the Medal of Valor, among many others.
R.L. loved the military and enlisted in the Army Air Corp at Fort Bragg, N.C., on Feb. 5, 1946. He did basic training in San Antonio and then was assigned to Randolph Air Field, Texas. He transferred to Lowery Airfield Colorado for Weapons Repair School, then to Camp Stoneman California for Navigation School.
On Dec. 20, 1946, he went to the 8053rd Air Sea Rescue 301st Fighter Wing, Okinawa, and returned to MacDill Air Field Florida and was honorably discharged on Feb. 6, 1948.
He realized the military was his true calling, so he re-enlisted in the Air Force in Atlanta on Aug. 20, 1955. On Sept. 8, 1955, he was sent to Walker Air Force Base in New Mexico.
He used his enlistment bonus to go back and married his lifelong love, Jo Ann Sawyer, on Aug. 26, 1957, in Franklin. They remained happily married for 46 years, and, together, they proudly had four children, Aldo James, Bruce Wayne, Douglas Edward and Vicky Sue.
His first son, Aldo James, was born in New Mexico and regrettably died at age 27 in Cheyenne from complications of juvenile and adult diabetes. He is greatly missed by all.
R.L.'s second son Bruce Wayne, born in New Mexico, died shortly after birth from kidney failure. R.L. then went to Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas to attend 36131A Ballistic Missile Cable Splicing School on Aug. 6, 1963.
On Oct. 1, 1963, he moved to the 351st Communication Squadron Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and had his third son, Douglas Edward. Doug married his high school love, Pamela Sue Stewart, and gave R.L. two grandchildren, Joshua Michael and Porsha Ann.
On June 9, 1967, he went to Kunsan AB, Korea, in the 6175th Civil Engineer Squadron and received military honors, including the Medal of Honor while in Korea.
After returning from Korea, he went to the 90th Communication Squadron at F.E. Warren Air Force Base
On July 9, 1968, they had their first daughter, Vicky Sue. Vicky married her beloved Leland Russell Johnson and became a very loved and cherished part of the family and close companion to R.L.
On Oct. 27, 1970, he went to Bein Hoa Vietnam with the "Red Horse" 823rd Civil Engineering Squadron and then to Cam Ranh Bay Vietnam on April 15, 1971, as Commander Red Horse Bet No. 6 Pleiku AB. He received additional military accommodations and retired honorably Oct. 25, 1971, in Cheyenne as a Master Sergeant with the 90th Communication Squadron at F.E. Warren Air Force Base.
After retiring, R.L. was immediately recruited to work for Hartsook Equipment and Pump Service, where he worked for 12 years before retiring to care for his son, Aldo James.
R.L. loved his daughter's best friend, Natalie Sepulveda, and thought of her as another daughter. He loved to hear her talk and was amazed at her energy and conviction. Vicky's husband's niece, Misty Heil, and her son, Kelton, also were brought into the family, and R.L. became grandpa to them. Kelton brought much joy and many smiles to R.L., though he is now only 3 years old. He loved Misty and Kelton as his own grandchildren.
R.L. Brendle faithfully and proudly supported the Salvation Army and would be honored by any contributions that could be made to them.
He fought honorably for his family and country in three wars and in life, and he has left his family proud. There was no one like R.L. Brendle and there never will be again. May he rest in peace knowing that his family loves him beyond comprehension.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

Brodrick, Troy G 02/2008 OK Fri June 29, 2007
Military records cast doubt on man's story
By Ja’Rena Lunsford
Business Writer

Troy G. Brodrick has lived the last 62 years as a colonel.
His tales of a battlefield commission from Gen. George S. Patton are commonplace around parts of the Oklahoma City metro area where he's made appearances at schools, telling children of his days in World War II where he earned three Purple Hearts.
Brodrick is quick to correct those who call him Mr. Brodrick. "It's Col. B,” he will say.
But Brodrick's memories as "Col. B,” don't exist to anyone but himself. Brodrick, whose tales of becoming a colonel by 21, flying for President Eisenhower, and retiring after more than 30 years of service were published in The Oklahoman's May 4 Business Section, but they were just that — tales.
According to Brodrick's military records, obtained from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Brodrick was discharged in 1949 as a private first class — the U.S. Army's third lowest enlisted rank. Records show that Brodrick served in both the Army and Air Force. His dates of service were from Aug. 19, 1943, to Nov. 3, 1945. Brodrick returned to the service in July 1947 and was discharged in February 1949, serving almost four years total — 36 years shy from the 40 he claims.
The Midwest City man is sticking to his story, which includes receiving three Purple Hearts that he keeps laying on a desk inside his home-turned-WWII-shrine.
The only decorations and awards listed on Brodrick's records were a WWII Victory Medal, a Combat Infantryman Badge, a Service Lapel Button and a Bronze Star Medal awarded for meritorious achievement.
Brodrick said documents listing his Purple Hearts and his service to Eisenhower are "secured.” The Dwight D. Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kan., was not able to find any record of Brodrick being a pilot for Ike. Brodrick said he didn't expect them to.
"That was military secret,” he said. "We couldn't publicize it. My records are secured and I do not answer anything.”
Brodrick may not be answering questions, but many people are asking them — and have been for years.
It's been almost five years since Edmond Sun reporter John Williams did a feature on Brodrick.
"He was a nice fella,” Williams said. "I went over to his house, saw all the pictures.”
Like the story that appeared in The Oklahoman, Williams' article spurred questions from readers and military officials who believed Brodrick's story was not 100 percent truthful. Williams said he received calls from officials at Tinker Air Force Base, but eventually the inquiries quit coming and the story seemed forgotten. But the man behind the story is anything but forgotten.
Baillie Dunlap at the Eastern Oklahoma County Regional History Center said the center removed a 26-page 2004 interview featuring Brodrick telling of his time in the service.
"We have decided to pull it until we can verify it,” Dunlap said. He said he has received calls from people who believed the transcript was false.
Dunlap said he doesn't know if Brodrick's story is true or false.
"Everything I personally know about Brodrick is all just hear-say,” he said. "I don't know either way.”
Jim Putnam, a retired Air Force colonel and former Inspector General at Tinker Air Force Base, said Brodrick's name and stories are not unfamiliar to him.
"He popped up when I was Inspector General about eight years ago,” Putnam said. "He's been warned informally at the ‘Do not do this again' level but I do not think he's been pulled into the U.S. Attorney's office and been told ‘Hey, let's talk felonies,'” Putnam said. "I think that's what needs to happen this time.”
The Stolen Valor Act of 2005 makes the unauthorized wearing, manufacturing or selling of military decorations and medals a federal offense, punishable by prison time, said FBI Special Agent Mike Sanborn in New York.
Sanborn, who has been investigating valor fraud for more than a decade, said it's not unusual to discover a person whose military claims are anything but the truth.
"It's more common than you would think,” Sanborn said. "I've been doing this for 12 years and I've probably come across 700 of these guys.” Sanborn said he gets about 15 tips a week concerning a possible stolen valor case.
Sanborn said fraudulent war heroes range from people from WWII to the Korean War. He said while most of the perpetrators are former soldiers who want to make their service record look more impressive, some are people who never served in the military.
The FBI investigates such cases while the U.S. Attorney prosecutes, Sanborn said. He said more often than not, FBI officials talk to the accused and explain the consequences of violating the Stolen Valor Act.
"Does it do any good to throw an 82-year-old man in jail? We want them to stop doing this. Our goal is to preserve the Medal of Honor and other medals,” he said.
Bob Troester, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Oklahoma, said the office looks at all cases individually before deciding whether to prosecute.
"We review all the facts and evidence that is presented by the law enforcement,” Troester said.
U.S. Attorney John C. Richter said though age is one of the factors examined when determining whether to prosecute, it doesn't make or break a decision.
"No one gets a pass,” he said. "On occasion we have to decide to prosecute someone who is elderly.”
Sanborn said valor violators often are caught in their lie by members of the military who, unlike civilian, can easily notice when a uniform is not in the correct order or when something doesn't make sense in their story.
"Once they start talking, their story seems to unravel,” he said.
That's how Walter Kline became suspicious of Brodrick. Kline is a retired lieutenant colonel who met Brodrick at a restaurant in 2000. The Bethany resident said he was drawn to Brodrick's license plate that recognized him as a D-Day survivor.
"We were just two old vets,” said Kline, 78. Kline said he and Brodrick were friends for about six months before Kline started noticing inconsistencies in Brodrick's military stories.
"Pretty soon his story just started falling apart,” Kline said. "One time I asked Brodrick, ‘Where did you learn to fly?' He said at Tinker, but Tinker was never a flight school.”
The desire to put a stop to Brodrick's tales always hung over Kline, who even contacted Williams after he read the story on his former friend in the Edmond paper. Kline said as time went by, the stories Brodrick told, such as flying Air Force One, seemed to get bigger.
"When I was running around with him, he never mentioned a thing to me about flying President Eisenhower,” Kline said.
Donald W. Rominger Jr., a WWII historian and retired history professor, said people who lie about their service often get what they've been after all along: respect.
"There is a certain amount of respect a vet gets,” Rominger said. "I think that sometimes someone is lonely and perhaps that they think they didn't get the respect they deserve.”
But that type of thinking hurts the true heroes who served with honor, Rominger said.
"There are people out there who have achieved what others claim,” he said.

The area has a "Wall of Honor" where Veterans are encouraged to post a short biography of there service and a photo. Brodrick has three photos posted.  One shows him in full Air Force officer dress uniform complete with full col. rank insignia. Also present is the U.S. Army CIB. The next one (in full dress uniform) is taken with a Oklahoma National Guard Major General at the 45th Infantry Museum during a Veteran's Day ceremony.

POW group calls claims of elite Navy service untrue

Comments made in Herald-Banner interview scrutinized by former military servicemen

Leslie Gibson
Rockwall County Herald-Banner

A veterans group contacting the Herald-Banner says that not everyone at a ceremony on Memorial Day at Rest Haven Funeral Home in Rockwall was who they claimed to be.

Michael Brown and Russ Leflamme said they were veterans of the Navy SEALS. Brown added that he had received the Navy Cross, two Purple Hearts and other awards. Leflamme said he also was in the Air Force for 10 years.

According to an organization which monitors claims of service and claims of honor, military documents available through the Freedom of Information Act do not support the two men’s claims of being SEALS, nor of Brown’s claims to medals.

The P.O.W. Network, which has researched false claims since 1989, submitted requests for public information on the two men and received documents back which do not support the claims of being a SEAL.

Mary Schantag of the P.O.W. Network sent the Herald-Banner copies of the documents she received from The National Archive Center in St. Louis, upon filing the FOI requests..

Brown, from Wisconsin, served in the United States Navy from Dec. 22, 1964 to Jan. 31, 1967, according to the information. No decorations nor awards were listed.

If he were a Navy Cross recipient and a SEAL, as he claimed, he would be in an elite group in both cases.

Only 120 awards of Navy Cross were awarded to those in the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam War, according to the official U.S. Navy Web site. That Web site links one to the Naval Historical Center.

One of the people who assists Shantag with research, Steve Robinson, said that total SEAL and SEAL-related participation in the Vietnam War was about 250.

He is a former SEAL, and provided some history and background via e-mail. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1978, and was in SEAL Team One.

SEAL teams were created in January 1962, he said, drawing their initial members from the existing Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT, or frogmen).

The first UDT/SEAL involvement started in Vietnam War in 1965. The last UDT/SEAL personnel returned to the continental U.S. at the end of 1972.

“From 1962 until the last SEALS and Frogs came home at the end of 1972, there was a total of 250 Navy SEALS and only about 500 to 700 UDT Frogmen involved in the war. That’s for the entirety of the Vietnam War,” he said.

Brown, when asked what brought him to the Memorial Day ceremony said he did three tours in Vietnam, and received three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, Silver Star, and Navy Cross. He said he enlisted from his home state of Wisconsin.

When the P.O.W. Network cast aspersions on the service and medal claims, the Herald-Banner called him on June 1 and asked him about the claims.

He said he had no idea why someone would dispute his claims. He could not get to his records at the time; he is a truck driver and was on the road, he said. At the Memorial Day service, he referred to his wife, but later said she could not get to his records. He said the dispute was no problem. Once the paperwork came back listing no awards, he did not return the phone call.

LeFlamme however, did return the phone call placed when the paperwork came back showing he was in the Air Force, but nothing showed U.S. Navy nor SEAL service.

He had said on Memorial Day that he served 13 years as a Navy SEAL, before joining the Air Force, from which he retired.

Records from St. Louis requested and received by Shantag show that he was active duty Air Force from July 27, 1972 to June 30, 1993. The record shows he retired as a staff sergeant.

When called about this, LaFlamme said he had undergone a name change in a “long, drawn-out story that I’m not allowed to talk about.”

The name changed occurred in 1987, he said, and added that it included a social security number change. Both men said they lived in Rockwall, and met at the Waffle House and became friends.

Neither is active in the local American Legion Post #117, according to post commander Bob Laing.

The SEAL Database contains 66 men with the last name BROWN. Only ONE (1) has the first name MICHAEL and that one man graduated from training in May 1988 – obviously not a Vietnam era veteran. Only ONE (1) has the middle name MICHAEL and that man graduated from training in February 2000 – also obviously not a Vietnam era veteran. ....
The SEAL Database does NOT contain any listings for anyone with the last name LAFLAMME or anything even remotely similar in spelling or pronunciation. In fact there are only two entries in the entirety of the Database for last names beginning with the alphabetic characters LAF..... sr

BUDWAH,  SGT DAVID W 09/2009 MD
Marine charged with faking war wounds for gain
Sep 21, 5:34 AM (ET)

By DAVID DISHNEAU

SABILLASVILLE, Md. (AP) - On a sultry day in July 2008, Marine Sgt. David W. Budwah strode in his battle fatigues to the front of a picnic pavilion to tell three dozen young boys what he did during the war.

With his clear gaze, rigid posture and muscled, tattooed arms, Budwah looked every inch the hero he claimed to be. He said he was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan when a homemade grenade exploded, wounding his face and arm when he dove to shield a buddy from the blast.
He urged the boys, ages 9-12, to take pride in themselves, their country and its warriors.

"We're here to make sure of the freedom you have every day," Budwah told his audience at Camp West Mar, a wooded American Legion compound about 60 miles northwest of Washington.

Spencer Shoemaker, then 10, was so impressed he had his picture taken with Budwah and kept a treasured newspaper clipping about the visit.

"What he said made me feel like I wanted to join the Marines," Spencer said.

But the Marines say Budwah is a liar, a fraud and a thief. They are court-martialing the 34-year-old Springhill, La., native, alleging he was never in Afghanistan, wasn't wounded and didn't earn the combat medals he wore - or the many privileges he enjoyed.

Budwah joined the Marines in October 1999 and spent nearly all of the next six years with a radio communications unit in Okinawa, Japan, according to the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Va., where Budwah has been stationed since February 2006.

Phony heroes aren't unusual. Thousands of complaints pour in annually to the FBI and civilian groups about impostors flaunting store-bought medals.

Their very prevalence exposes something else - a nation so eager to embrace its war fighters, especially the wounded, that it sometimes fails to discern between the real heroes and the fakes.

"In every society in history, the warrior is glorified," said phony-hero debunker B.G. "Jug" Burkett of Plano, Texas. "The second you say you're a warrior who has performed heroically in combat, everybody perceives you differently."

Burkett, 65, a Vietnam veteran and author of the 1998 book, "Stolen Valor," said the urge to honor the wounded can cloud one's judgment.

"I tell reporters that when you've got a guy who's vocal - 'Let me tell you how I won my Silver Star' - your antenna should go up," Burkett said. "The real guys typically don't talk about it."

Budwah's case is remarkable because he is an active-duty Marine facing military justice, not a civilian charged with wearing unearned medals. Of nearly 3,100 courts-martial last year in the four major armed services, only 27 were trials for wearing illegal decorations. Just two involved Marines.

Prosecutors say Budwah wore unauthorized medals and accepted VIP invitations to rock concerts, major-league baseball games, banquets and other events meant to fete wounded warriors.

He faked post-traumatic stress disorder in hopes of leaving service early and was sent to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, where he bluffed his way into 33 events from late July through November 2008, according to charges obtained by The Associated Press through an appeal of its Freedom of Information Act request.

Bethesda hospital spokesman Chris Walz said the staff tries to involve as many patients as possible in such activities, which range from free NFL tickets to speaking engagements like Budwah's at Camp West Mar.

The charges include making false official statements, malingering, misconduct and larceny. Budwah faces up to 31 1/2 years in prison and a dishonorable discharge if convicted on all eight counts at a trial set for Oct. 20. at Quantico.

Budwah, who declined to enter a plea at his Aug. 5 arraignment, denied wrongdoing in a brief telephone interview in April. "The allegation is not even true," he said, declining to comment further.

DefEnse attorney Marine Capt. Kelly Repair and prosecutor Marine Capt. Thomas Liu also have declined to comment.

Recent prosecutions of active-duty service members include Dontae L. Tazewell, a Navy hospital corpsman sentenced in January 2008 in Norfolk, Va., to two years in prison for wearing an unearned Purple Heart and other decorations. Tazewell falsely claimed he had rescued six Marines and recovered the bodies of four others in Iraq.

Prosecutors portrayed him as a failing sailor so desperate to remain in service that he fabricated the story.

Navy corpsman Robert White, got 45 days in the brig after pleading guilty in December at Great Lakes Naval Station, Ill., to wearing a Purple Heart he bought. A former girlfriend testified White obtained the medal after he was shunned by his peers for assaulting her, the Navy Times reported.

People fabricate military injuries for many reasons, including laziness, greed, sympathy and psychosis, said Loren Pankratz of Oregon Health & Science University, who wrote about PTSD impostors in his book, "Patients Who Deceive."

"A more common theme would be somebody who would represent sort of the antihero - the guy who's given his all and yet been abused and misunderstood," Pankratz said.

Burkett said others are simply con men.

Walter E. Boomer, who served as assistant commandant of the Marine Corps from 1992 to 1994, vaguely remembers meeting Budwah in November when they were guests at a Grand National Waterfowl Association benefit on Maryland's Eastern Shore. They shot at ducks, drank and dined with other VIPs and shotgun manufacturing executives.

"I accepted his story at face value," Boomer said. "Nothing that I recall would have set off alarm bells."

Budwah again managed his way to the center of attention at a September 2008 boxing event in Glen Burnie, Md. Organizer Scott Wagner said the highlight of the night was when he brought Budwah and dozens of other military hospital patients into the ring for a standing ovation.

"Were they injured or not? I don't know and I really don't care. If half of them were injured, I still feel good about it," he said.

A year after Budwah's speech to the youngsters at the American Legion camp, Spencer Shoemaker sat stunned in the family's kitchen as he read the charges against his Marine idol for the first time.

"Well, it's better that I know," the boy said after a long silence. "It did tear me down, but I'll still join the Marines."

His father Michael, a construction worker, seethed at the news about Budwah.

"He scammed America," Shoemaker said. "He scammed a kid."

Burch, Ted 08/2005 .

...... Stease said he and the others began the local chapter "because we knew there were guys out there who had been through what we went through, but they were scattered all over the area.

"We wanted to get know the other guys,'' Stease said. "It was an experience we can never forget.''

As they gathered for lunch, the men drifted from table to table greeting each other.

Ted Burch of Hamilton sat down to a plate of chicken breast on rice. He is a Korean war veteran who was taken prisoner in the fall of 1950. He spent the rest of the war - nearly three years - in prison, where he was beaten and nearly starved by his captors.

"For years, I couldn't even look at rice, because that is about all we ate over there,'' Burch said. "But I guess I can eat it now.''

Harry Falck of Sycamore Township, the only other Korea veteran in the organization, sat nearby. He was taken prisoner only a few months before Burch. Like Burch, he spent nearly three years as a POW.

"I was just a dog-face infantryman,'' Falck said. "People say to me now, 'You're a hero.' Well, I'm no hero. What I am is a survivor. We all are.''

Falck is real.

I have nothing on Burch. I would like to know where he got all that rice from. Rice was a luxury until the last few months of the war. Prior to that it was sorghum seed twice a day.

Burgess, Michael E.  10/2006 . Claims Navy SEAL

====================

Dear Sir/Madam,

I greatly appreciate your interest in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams, and your search for the TRUTH. Before answering your questions I must make clear that I am a private individual, not affiliated with the US Dept. of Defense or any government organization. Additionally, although I worked for/with the AuthentiSEAL verification organization for several years as an Investigator (and later as a Special Investigator dealing with the media), I ceased to work for that organization in any capacity in late 2004. That said, I assure you that my copy of the SEAL database is current and complete to the present date.

If the name you provided is spelled correctly, I do NOT find a listing in the SEAL database of successful graduates for anyone named MICHAEL E. BURGESS. I have also examined possible alternate spellings, and names with similar pronunciations. Please be aware that I do not have access to any records (official or unofficial) listing the names of individuals who reported for SEAL training, but who subsequently failed to complete the training program.

Unless he has undertaken the unlikely action of a legal name change (an action for which there would be court documentation) since his claimed attendance at BUD/S training, and based upon the scant name-only information you have provided, I can state conclusively that MICHAEL E. BURGESS has NEVER COMPLETED SEAL training, and he is not now, nor was he ever a Navy SEAL.

It is quite common for those making fraudulent SEAL claims to cite a “secret” training class, “special selection and skills which allowed them to bypass BUD/S training”, or “secret missions” as an explanation for the lack of military documentation to back up their stories. They also tend to claim their military records are “sealed” and cannot be accessed. I would caution you that despite anything the man might have said, there are NO secret SEALs. Before any classified operations may be undertaken, a man must first successfully complete the totally unclassified BUD/S Training program. No one gets to the SEAL Teams without completing this training; there are NO EXCEPTIONS! The graduates of that training program are listed in the SEAL database – an unclassified document which is nonetheless considered “highly sensitive” and therefore not available for general public circulation. There have been and will continue to be secret missions, but there are NO secret SEALs… we know them all.

Thank you again for your concern in this matter, and for your assistance in upholding the honor of the US Navy SEAL Teams.

 Very respectfully,

Hey there Sarge,

I wanted to take a moment to write and thank you first for your service to the Corps, and second for the work you do now, including putting this newsletter together.

While I'm younger then most of the Marines that write in, I love reading the stories from the past generations of Marines. I'm a 39yo Master Gunny that has traveled a lot and seen more then I would have cared to. I've served one tour in Afghanistan and 4 tours in Iraq (including the battle for Fallujah). I'm very proud to follow in the steps of the men and women that have proceeded me in the Corps and to all the "Docs" that have patched us up despite us saying its only a scratch.

I was out on Coronado Island in San Diego recently to have my picture taken. For the photo shoot, I had to be in my class A's. While I got lots of Ohh's and Aww's from people passing by, what really got to me was seeing two couples walking past wearing a Vietnam Marine Vet's cover. Much to the dislike of the photographer, I walked up to the men and ask if I could shake their hand and thanked then for what they went through. One of the men shed a few tears and their wives ask if they could take my picture with their husbands. After chatting for about 20 minutes and fielding multiple questions about the various medals I was wearing, they went on their way. The photographer ask me why I'd stopped the shoot to go talk to strangers and all I could say was, "they weren't strangers, they were Marines."

Bush, Jason Eugene  06/2009 WA Published: Thursday, June 18, 2009
http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20090618/NEWS01/706189914&news01ad=1#Murder.suspect.not.the.military.veteran.he.claims.to.be

Murder suspect not the military veteran he claims to be

He called himself "Gunny" and reportedly told his pals in the Minutemen American Defense border-watch group that he was a decorated Special Forces veteran who'd survived combat in Somalia, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Instead, there is no record that Jason Eugene Bush served in the military as he claims, spokesmen at the Pentagon said Wednesday.

Court records reveal Bush, 34, to be a sometimes-violent ex-convict who spent much of his teens and early 20s behind bars, and once told the court he had long-standing problems with debilitating mental illness.

Until his arrest last week on multiple murder charges, Bush was "operations director" for the anti-immigration group directed by Shawna Forde, 41, of Everett.

On the now-defunct Web page for the group Forde ran, Bush -- or "Gunny," as former members say he was known -- was introduced as someone who had served six overseas tours and had received the Purple Heart and the Silver Star.

In a January 1998 declaration in Chelan County Superior Court, Bush said he'd been treated for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia since the mid-1980s, when he was 12. At the time, Bush said he worried that mental problems would hinder his ability to assist in his own defense in a stolen property case.

"For most of my life since the age of eleven or twelve, I have had an experience of being outside myself, of watching another person take over my body," Bush said in a 1998 court declaration. "I start going haywire and I don't know what I'm doing or why. It's like being in a daze. I don't know why it happens and it scares me. It's like someone else crawls under my skin. It is very frustrating."

Bush was examined by mental health experts 11 years ago, and found competent to stand trial. He wound up serving nearly five years in prison for a variety of charges, including auto theft and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Bush now finds himself jailed in Arizona along with Forde and another man, all charged with first-degree murder in connection with a May 30 home invasion.

The trio are accused of having passed themselves off as law enforcement officers to force their way into the home of an Arivaca, Ariz., man they suspected of drug trafficking.

The intruders, all dressed in camouflage, and one of them with his face painted black, fatally shot Raul Flores, 29, wounded Flores' wife, and killed the couple's 9-year-old daughter, Brisenia.

Bush also is charged with second-degree murder for a 1997 stabbing death of a Wenatchee man. He allegedly was connected to the killing earlier this year based on genetic tests on evidence collected nearly a dozen years ago.

Wenatchee police say they've found Bush has "long-standing" connections to white supremacists, including people associated with Aryan Nations, according to court papers.

The nickname "Gunny" often is applied to people who have earned the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in the Marine Corps.

There are no service records matching Bush's name and date of birth, Marine Corps spokesman 1st Lt. Brian Block said at the Pentagon on Wednesday.

Army spokesman Richard McNorton also said he found no matches for Bush in Army personnel records.

Chuck Stonex of Alamagordo, N.M., a Minuteman who earlier supported Forde but has since broken ties, said he only met the man who called himself "Gunny" a couple of times.

Once was May 30, Stonex said, when Forde asked him to provide first aid to a minor gunshot wound on Bush's calf. Forde and Bush misled him about how the wound was received, he said.

Stonex said he met Bush not long after at a Tucson, Ariz., restaurant. He said Bush showed him what appeared to be military paperwork documenting Special Forces training as well as medals from combat operations.

"He claimed that he got hit twice; once in Iraq and once in Somalia," Stonex said.

Stonex described himself as a veteran of combat in Vietnam.

Bush's deception about prior military service "makes a mockery of us veterans, I think," Stonex said Monday. "It is really, really poor taste. It is like impersonating a priest."

Court papers show that Bush has been in trouble with the law since 15, when he was prosecuted for felony property crimes in northern Idaho. He was convicted in Kansas in 1994 for burglary as well as assault on a female corrections officer and attempted escape, documents show.

His Washington state criminal history includes juvenile and adult convictions for property crimes and assault, including a March 1998 beating of another inmate at the Chelan County jail. The victim in that case suffered broken bones in the face. The victim believed the attack occurred because of his sexual orientation, but Bush denied that motive, court papers show.

Before he went to prison in the late 1990s, Bush had worked as a welder, according to court papers.

It is unclear when Bush met Forde. Arizona police allege that he participated in a plan orchestrated by Forde to raise money for their group through crime. In addition to the Arizona killings, police in Arizona, California and Washington are investigating the pair for potential connections to robberies and other violent acts.

When he was introduced on Forde's Web page not long ago, Bush promised to have an impact on border-area crime, eschewing "beer, binoculars and lawn chairs" for "boots on the ground, recon, surveillance and ACTION."

He was quoted at the time: "My goal is to bring the full force of our collective abilities down on the bad guys. This will make waves."
