Claims former Army special forces and
POW. He is Chinese/Hawaiian. He has photos of himself
dressed as a Vietcong. When he would do is go into North Viet, dressed
as a VC, then whack, as he put it, payroll officers. As he put it, you
get the payroll, the soldiers don't get paid, and moral goes down. This
guy had a million stories. Anyway, he got caught, was held as a POW for
a year, escaped, and went back at it again.
2005 - Claims former POW/Rangers-SOG.
He stated that he was a POW for about an year and escaped captivity.
Survived by scooping up water that had flesh in it and drinking the

Capt McGrath;
RE: POW status of, Retired Gunnery Sergeant
Arthur R. Taylor, .... USMC. (made Gunny on January 1, 1976 with
precedence number 744) At which time you reported back that
(according to his records) he wasn't a POW at the Hanoi Hilton as
claimed. Naturally, and for obvious reasons you were quite upset
by the exaggerated lie concerning this particular camp and wished to
pursue it further....
quote
As for Art's story, it's vague and incomplete. He fains loss of memory,
or that it was too hard to talk about or that he wasn't allowed to talk
about it. And, "the reason 'we' couldn't find the facts about
him was because it was still considered top secret and classified
information."
The one part of 'his story' that he was very clear on
however, is how a guard would enter his cell every morning and demand he
say, "I hate the US". Art would bravely refuse, and for it, he
take a strike in the jaw with the butt of the guards rifle. This torture
happened everyday.
2007 - Has been known to wear 4 Purple Hearts, one Bronze Star W/V and
Gold parachutists wings among other medals. not noted on his DD214.

years to clear up my 214 but to no avail, everyones gone. there are no
records at company level, becaus I was stationed with Viet. rangers.
which really didn't keep perfect records, and reported to Macv Tm. 21. I
did two tours over there,68-69, 70-71. I don't know if you knew that the
other guy's(dave johnstone, Mike T) and I went back into the service at
the end of 70, but we did.I think that when they promoted me to E5
before I went to nam my first time they promoted me into another MOS. My
original MOS was 05B10 (radio operater) but when they promoted me they
put me in another MOS because it was the only spot availlable which was
03B20 I think that's it which is entertainment specialist. We believe
that it's the reason why I didn't recieve any thing(bronze star, ect.)
everyone else got them and we all did the same job. the guy who promoted
me screwed up, he should have kept my original MOS..... |

Billy Van Gaalen Sr.
(Created: Friday, August 11, 2006 2:15 PM EDT)
UNION — Billy Joe Van Gaalen Sr., 57, died from
complications of lung cancer caused by Agent Orange, according to
his family, Aug. 8, 2006, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in
Rockport.
Born in Denver May 11, 1949, he was the son of
Mathias and Sara Ryan Van Gaalen. He was educated in Denver schools.
He left high school to join the Marine Corps. He
served his entire 32-month tour in Vietnam where he was a prisoner
of war and was awarded the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts.
After his return to the United States in 1969, he worked at various
jobs. On Sept. 26, 1976, he married Cynthia J. Burns in Fairfax, Va.
He worked as a drywall and painting contractor in Virginia. The
couple lived there for several years before moving to Union to be
near his wife's family in 1987. He went back to work doing painting
and drywall until his health prevented him from working.
He will be remembered by his family for his stubbornness and as a
person who told it like it was. He also enjoyed collecting Hot
Wheels cars, music and computer games and nurturing his green thumb
by growing several different kinds of plants.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8835 in
Winslow, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the Disabled
American Veterans....
Memorial donations may be made for the benefit of Maine's veterans

During Billy Joe's tour of duty with the United States Marines he
was a highly honored hero: Up to this time in his life he had
already earned 3 Purple Hearts and the US Government is currently
working on his fourth. Along with the Purple Hearts Billy Joe
received several other commendations.
1967- National Defense Ribbon
1967- Vietnam Service Medal

1968- Navy Military Merit Medal

going to display all his medals and awards on a table next to
him...He also earned the Silver Star...

The Artist: Eugene “Geno” Vicencio
Eugene
has been drawing and, painting all his life, using it as
a tool to express his love of his nationality, beauty of
his environment and an outlet to make a statement of his
experiences. Eugene Vicencio is a 56-year-old Vietnam
veteran who served in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne
from 1967 to 1969 as a recon-wireman where he had to
coordinate the enemy’s position bringing the
information to his superiors. Geno
was captured in Vietnam was held as a prisoner of war,
and rescued some time later. He returned to do
yet another tour in the U.S. Marine Corps during the
1970’s as a gunny in an artillery unit. Diagnosed with
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), he uses art to
safely recreate his experiences in Vietnam, thus giving
himself tremendous confidence to meet his PTSD head-on.
“Drawing and painting put me at ease and in a relaxed
state of mind,” Eugene says. “It’s what I do best,
and I look forward to each day that I can experience the
peace of mind that my art brings to me.
It was during the time he was in captivity that Eugene
realized the beauty of life and the importance of
serving one’s country. He vowed to place on paper the
visions he carried with him so others might become more
aware of, and appreciate, all that life has to offer.
Geno states:
“As a Vietnam Veteran and POW, Jim’s poetry struck
my heart and soul. Jim captures the essence of the
Vietnam experience from the soldiers’ point of view.
So poignant and real is Jim’s poem, that it brought
tears to my eyes and joy to my soul.” |

service to our country. Geno studied at the San Francisco Academy of
Arts after his discharge from the Army. Through
his association with the Veteran's Administration his work has
been shown at numerous galleries and shows, winning local and national
honors.
