Can't remember the name of the ship he served on, but he claims he flew on a helicopter into VN as a flight crew member, and upon landing, he shot a VC in the woods! Claims to have been a helicopter mechanic. He states his DD214 is incorrect and he can't get it corrected because his records were lost in the fire. Claims 2 tours in VN, once he was in the hospital - has never said why. Also states he was in the ARMY or National Guard as a SSGT. States that he was a POW! At one point, stated he couldn't join the VFW because his DD214 was not correct; but now says he belonged to the VFW in New York, but resigned because they weren't doing things right! He is now a member of the American Legion. He constantly tells the other members "war stores" about himself in VN; wears military clothing, POW bracelet and has told numerous friends that he is retired Military - he in fact is retired from Civil Service! He constantly reads any true military stories, books, etc. and buys videos about VN. Told a deputy sheriff that he was a Federal Marshall in New York! Also stated that his first wife and two children were killed in a car wreck while he was in the hospital during his second tour of Nam. Reports state his REAL wife, JoAnn, says that he left his first wife and kids and never paid child support or expressed any interest in seeing them, even after they were grown and of age. |

From: Kenneth Popp May 9 2005 9:50:29AM To: Kathy Reynolds (3112) Who else? (in reply to 2) I could definitely go with John McCain as I know him personally as we were both Prisoner of War in Vietnam together at the Hanoi Hilton. He was there for 4 1/2 years (I do not know how he did it) and I was there for 1 year. He took me in like a son as there was about a 12-13 year difference in our ages. Super Great Man.

| Power, Daniel | San Diego | 07/2003 |
I thought I'd tell
you about a little encounter I had today. I was walking
along Broadway in San Diego, going to court to file some papers
against an ex-tenant dead-beat. I came to First Street, and
across the street, on the corner, sitting in a
wheelchair, was a sunburned, bedraggled, very pathetic looking guy
missing his left leg, about mid-thigh. He was a pityful sight, facing
my way, holding a crudely made cardboard and crayon sign which read,
"VET, POW, work for ?". I crossed the street and
walked directly up to him and here's how the
conversation went.....
Me: You were a POW? Him: Yes sir! Me: What's your name?
Him: Daniel.
Me: Daniel who?
Him: Daniel Power.
Me: Where were you a POW? Him: Central highlands, Vietnam! Me: Where? Him: Mid and central highlands. Vietnam. Me: What camp were you held in? Him: Me and four other guys were kept in a hole in the ground, 15 feet deep. Me: How long were you held? Him: 27 months, 4 days, 8 hours and 24 minutes..... Me: What years were you a POW?
Him: 1969, 1970, 1971
Me: What service were you in?
Him: Marine Corps...MOS 300!
Me: I'm sorry about your condition.....as I pointed to his left leg stump... Him: Ahhh, stepped on a land-mine!
Me: I'm sorry about your condition, but I was a
POW in Vietnam.....and you weren't!
His eyes sort of glazed over and he gave me one of the strangest looks
I've ever seen. It literally registered, "How'n
the hell did you know I was lying?" He
didn't say anything else, and I just abruptly left, and didn't look
back, and walked on down the street to the
courthouse.

Another time: "I was a POW for 7 years. I was in the CIA in 'Secret Operations'". Later: "I was a POW for two years." And then: "you don't understand, I was a POW for 2 years with the Air Force, then they discharged me to the CIA as I was a CIA operative. I did the other 5 years as a POW with the CIA." |

| Price, Steven | Virginia | 11/2003 | .....he was captured and taken prisoner. While a prisoner, he was tortured endlessly. They would often just set him and his fellow captives out on the river and hopefully, they'd be brought in before high tide. Or sometimes they'd sharpen bamboo and stab it in the hostage's ears, and because of this horrible torture, Mr. Price is now deaf in one ear. Another anguish Mr. Price had to go through was not being fed. He was forced to live in his own waste and eat the insects, rats and mice it attracted. He went into the war at 135 pounds and came out at 85 pounds. Escape was impossible. Once, he tried to do so and for his punishment they set his leg up on a stump and had a guard jump on it until it broke. For 42 months Mr. Price, or 1801 as they referred to him, had to endure all this, but the worst part he says is the fact that "they took away your identity. You weren't a person any more." Upon his release in 1974, Mr. Price...... | 11/2003 This is not a student's embellishment. The poor kid wrote was he was told. Price should be run out of town. This is a good chance tho for the teacher to now go back and expound on journalism ethics.... TWO sources. Had they check JUST the internet for names, they could have stopped this before it went this far. HOMEWORK. They have to do the HOMEWORK. Otherwise they grow up to be writers that make statements like this: Unfortunately, doing research on a veteran's past history is outside the scope and capability of any newspaper reporter. |
