It
is time for Neal to take his book to a nationwide audience. He is
planning to contact OPRAH and I am hoping you can assist with that
process. On OPRAH’s website she has asked for readers to send in
comments on books they have read this summer that have not made the Best
Seller list. You have made favorable comments regarding Neal’s
book in previous conversations or in writing. I am asking you to
fill out OPRAH’s website page to show reader support for his book. Go
to the website listed here: http://www.oprah.com/entity/oprahsbookclub.
At the right side there is a box called Share Your Story. Click on
the second line, What did you read this summer? If it doesn't come
up or it doesn't go through please send an email using the fill in blanks
from the attachment so that your voice can be heard. Oprah is
changing her website and some links no longer work. The last email
listing I could find for OPRAH was oprah@aol.com
or you can mail it to The Oprah Winfrey Show,
Please
speak directly to what has made the biggest impact on you and whether
you can see Neal’s book affecting others across the country in the
same way. The website says OPRAH will choose a new book for her
Book Club on Friday, September 19. That is this Friday.
Please complete your comments on this page as soon as possible since the
page may no longer be available after that date. In fact, it may
not even be available now.
If
you care to make a copy of your comments to send to Neal, I’m sure he
would be delighted to read them. His email address is
nmcafee@msn.com.
Remember you are not just helping Neal. You are becoming an agent
of change and a part of the answer to Neal’s promise to Rosy. He
needs your help and the help of many like you to ensure he can look at
Rosy’s picture and say, “Yes, Rosy, They will not forget!”
It all starts with you!
I
thank you in advance for your love and support for Neal.
With
joy and gratitude, ........................ Publicist ===================================================
................
is a nice lady and VERY close to Neal, however, like me and so many
others, she has been told by Neal about his experiences as a Vietnam
POW.
............. is the Organizer of a Self Publishing Support Group in which she not only actively promotes and endorses Neal, but has given him numerous speaking opportunities to share his book, which ALWAYS includes his background as a Vietnam POW. ---------------------------------- June

I just thought you may be interested that he is deceased, and can no
longer ride on the coat tails of REAL heroes, none of whom we have
known have "flaunted" their heroism, Purple Hearts,
or
POW/MIA status(es). Rather, the REAL heroes downplay their
achievements and their heroism. The obituary also mentioned his
website www.nealmcafee.bravehost.com as a resource to see his
literary accomplishments - specifically the book he wrote re: the
Holoucust. Interestingly, the links to Rose's book do not
work! ....he had written a book about the holocaust and was trying to get
onto Oprah ........cited his Purple Heart

... If I read this correctly, Mr. Neal McAfee has
claimed that he was a POW during the Vietnam War. No man by
this name was ever with any one of us, the 661 surviving POWs of the
Vietnam War, nor is he known by the Department of Defense in this
regard. The official Department of Defense website listing all
3,797 MIAs (to include all POWs) is at: http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo/pmsea/files.htm
Mr. McAfee is not listed. I will give Mr. McAfee
the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is a work of fiction and
not an actual claim of having been a Vietnam era POW. If so,
then I wish Mr. McAfee ever success in promoting his work of fiction.
If indeed Mr. McAfee does make this preposterous claim, then this
would make him a liar. If this were to be the case, this would
throw all other claims up for suspicion and verification of facts.
One could start by getting Mr. McAfee's service record from the
National Records Center in St. Louis using a Form 180 Request.
All comers are entitled to a copy of Mr. McAfee's service record as
per the Freedom of Information Act.
I would hope that Ms. Winfrey would not be lied to that
Mr. McAfee is said to have been a POW when in fact he was never a
MIA/POW for even a single day of the Vietnam War. It would prove
embarrassing to her when the truth is unveiled that she had been
duped.
Sincerely,
Captain John M. McGrath, USN (Ret)

This is to inform you that Nathan

Several years ago Max confessed to me
and others that he had made up the stories about being a Special
Forces member, Nam POW, Army Sergeant Major, and other tales. He
continuously apologized to me and other veterans he met for making
this claims. He promised to cease these tales and, having monitored
him and his activities in the Scottish and Scottish Highland Games
community, I found him true to his word to me. When others have tried
to put him in the category of 'hero', he has denied them and has told
everyone that the stories were lies. It was hard on him to do this
but, as his promise to me, he had done so. I worked with Brad Bradford from
Texas in the initial stages of Max's exposure and through Brad made
Max aware of information about his past that was undeniable. I
promised Max that if he would come clean I would stand with him. I
have done so and Max had kept his word, literally until his death.
If you would post the above paragraph
on his listing so all who knew of him will know of his confession and
also his death.

.....Sergeant Major
Leonard Mechelli,
United States Marine Corps(Retired) was the guest of honor and
provided an inspirational example to over 400 Tri-Service (Air
Force, Army, Navy) students assembled for the early morning
formation. "Gunny" (as he prefers to be called) Mechelli was
born on March 13, 1930 in New York City. He enlisted in the
Marine Corps in 1946 at age 16 and went to boot camp at Parris
Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of basic training he was
attached to 1st Marine Division 3rd Regiment, where he deployed
to Korea for 11 months. While in Korea he was field promoted to
Sergeant and earned his first Bronze star with "V" device (for
Valor) as well as a Purple Heart. After Korea, he returned to
the States and was stationed at Camp Pendleton where he then
transferred to San Diego for the Marines elite Recon training.
After training he was attached to 1st Marine Division Assault
Force (1st Force Recon Unit).
In 1956 he deployed to Vietnam for 4
months--years before major US involvement in that country. In
March of 1959 he deployed to
Cambodia on a classified mission.
His
entire unit of 284 Marines and 4 Navy Corpsman and he were
captured by Cambodian forces and later turned over to the
Vietcong. He was held as a Prisoner Of War for 5 years
where he and his fellow marines endured privation and torture.
They were rescued in 1964 when the Ameri-Cal Division, US Army
(US Army Calvary) advanced toward where they were being held and
the Vietcong abandoned them on a beach. Of the original 489
captured, only 48 survived to be rescued (and several of the
survivors, weak from their ordeal, died within days of their
rescue). He earned his second Bronze Star with "V" Device and
was awarded the
Navy Cross,
our nations 2nd highest award for valor.

Dear Mr. Baity:
I read with interest your 13 May 2010 Article
"Vets Help One of Their
Own" where you wrote that Ed Meek was a disabled
veteran of the Vietnam
War as well as a Prisoner of War:
I am afraid that Mr. Meek has defrauded Mr. Mike
Butryn and the fine folks
of your community. No man named Ed Meek was ever
with any one of us,
the 664 surviving POWs of the Vietnam War, nor is
he known by the
Department of Defense in this regard. The
official list of all 3,797 MIAs (to
include all POWs) is available on the internet at
this address:
You will find that Mr. Meek was never a POW. You
you wish to get to the
bottom of this and write a corrected story, which
your readers deserve, then
I suggest that you obtain a copy of Mr. Meek's
service record with a Form
180 Request to the National Records Center in St.
Louis. If you are not
familiar with this procedure, Mary Schantag of
POW Network can assist
you to get his record in approximately four to
six weeks.
Fraud is a crime. Mike Butryn should be
compensated for his work. The
other volunteers who were lied to should receive
an apology. Your readers
who were deceived should have a corrected story
exposing the man who
took advantage of all concerned.
The Department of Defense is info copied on this
note. Mr. Larry Greer,
PAO for the Defense Department Prisoner of
War/Missing Personnel Office
(DPMO) will be awaiting your call (during normal
Washington DC working
hours) should you decide to verify my
information. ...
Best wishes to you. Please give me a call if I
can assist in setting the record
straight.
