claims Hamburger Hill captive/survivor - May 69 - 2 yrs 4 months 27 days

Atlantic Monthly had article by PJ O'Rourke mentioning Garcia and his POW captivity......12/01
Featured in an article in TIME Magazine in 1993 - as "Dave" - on site in the Ashau Valley in Vietnam.

Surfaced in Hong Kong in 1988, coming from South Africa where he had been living for a number of years.  Travels on a Mexican passport he claims to have been given while he was living there after being disillusioned with the USA. Has a faded tattoo on his arm in Laotian script. Claims it came from the prison camp.   Passport lists his date of birth as 1942, he claims to have been born in 1950. Claims he was conscripted at 18, it seems quite a rapid rise to go through basic training, be deployed in Vietnam and end up a LRP all in less than a single tour.  Also claims to have been a deep sea diver for 18 years, a surfer (says he grew up in Laguna Beach), and if you have ever been anywhere or done anything - he's done it first.

Zeb...Yep, you got one of our 700 phony POWs.  David Garcia is  well known to us.  He is posted on the internet as a fraud.  Several in the Hong Kong area have made it public that he is a  fraud, but he still keeps chugging along with the cock and bull  story.  He claims he was a LURP (long range patrol), fought in A  Shau Valley, captured, spent 2 years, 4 months and 27 days as a  POW....all BS.  He is not known by DOD as ever MIA or a POW for  even one day.  I think the LURP stuff is a lie, too.

Mr. Garcia,

For the last few months, it has been our unfortunate task to investigate your claims of captivity during the Vietnam War. You are well aware that your claims cannot be substantiated, and are fraudulent. YOUR FRIENDS now realize this also.

According to all available records from the United States Government, posted publicly on the Internet, you, Mr. Garcia were never held, captured, detained, missing in action for 2 hours nor 2 days nor ANY AMOUNT OF TIME during the Vietnam War. You weren't rescued and did not escape. You were never on covert ops, secret missions, your papers were not burned in St. Louis, your mission wasn't classified nor did you beg to be kept off the lists for privacy sake. You are not a "lost Sheep" nor a member of the group of legitimate returnees -- and we have contact with all of them. Your statements to this effect have disgraced the honor of the many that served, the families that still wait, and those that have returned.

We have called the Pentagon (Larry Greer, 703-602-2102 x 169) to verify your claims. We have also contacted the President of the organization of returnees, former POW Capt. John Michael McGrath, USN Ret, for further verification of the fraud and misconception by you. Neither know you as a former, honored, Prisoner of War.

Enclosed you will find a FORM180, request for military records. If you still insist that you were held captive, please COMPLETE and sign the release form and return it to us. You are free to choose a neutral party for your complete set of military records to mailed to. Sadly, we cannot trust having them mailed to you.

Should you choose not to sign the release, and not to admit to the lie, we will notify every Veterans group, newspaper, radio, TV station, VA facility, the courts, and local governmental offices in your area of Hong Kong that they have a wannabee POW in their community. They will be told the claims of captivity are NOT to be believed. Additionally, we will notify veterans groups and travel agency that handles travel to and from SE Asia of your sickening lies - which we will not even repeat it sickens us so.

If evidence is found that you, Mr. Garcia, wear medals you are not entitled to, have POW plates on you car, are receiving VA benefits under this guise, or have altered your DD214 - you may be subject to Federal prosecution. Until and unless you admit to all that you have lied, your name will remain posted on the HALL OF SHAME, HEROES OR VILLAINS site on the Internet. Should you think this is a bluff, please find Internet Access and see

http://www.pownetwork.org/phonies

This listing includes your name as well as the many other phony and wannabee POWs uncovered in the last several years. ALL claimed to have been held. NONE were. You have until February 10th for the completed FORM180 to be in our hands. Furthermore, should you doubt our ability to notify all of the aforementioned groups, we can give you the names of many phonies that have seen the results of our "fraud alerts" in their hometowns, on the job and in the church communities. Several are now  single, unemployed, or have run out of town. Is there some familiar reason there in why you don't come "home"? Your "family" reason is almost laughable.

We wonder what gives you the right to steal the honor and respect our returnees have earned with their suffering? You steal their glory, yet you fail to steal and suffer their pain or nightmares. Mr. Garcia, you are a DISGRACE to your heritage, our veterans, our POWs, our missing, their families and our heroes. SHAME ON YOU.

The clock is ticking.

Sincerely,

Mary Schantag

BTW - we can only locate two records for David P Garcia serving in Vietnam..... The MOS certainly does not fit the most fantastic missions you claim. You don't suppose one of these is really YOURS, do you??

David Garcia tells tales of being a Vietnam era LRRP and POW. He always entertains a crowd with tales of Vietnam. That was my first clue that he might not be everything he wanted people to believe he was, because most of my other Vietnam vet friends seldom talked about their service years.  I guess I wasn't too surprised to find his name on your list of phonies.

Last I knew he was in Hong Kong in the late 1990's and a member of the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents Club.

It was my team that was hit by lightning on April 23, 1969 while on a recon mission on one of the secondary ridges running to the top of the mountain.
When the battle began two weeks later, no ranger team from the 101st Abn. Div. or any other unit was involved.  There is no record of a David Garcia in L Co. 75th Inf. (Ranger) that my records indicate.

During the  investigation he told others that it CAN'T be him - he was not a U.S. citizen and never served in Vietnam. Then additional stories appear in articles where he AGAIN claimed to be a Vietnam POW.  We CAN say he was NEVER a POW- he was NOT covert, his records didn't burn and he's a LIAR.

He was given an opportunity to sign a records release....... there was NO response. He KNEW he'd be noted as a phony if he did not sign the release. It was clearly STATED in the letter.

Loman, ID 12/2004

Rick Golding (aka Graig Wolf)/Gray Wolf and Hushton Jackson live in Loman Idaho . They claim to be half brothers.... Both claim Army, POW's in Nam, have Purple Hearts, Rick claims a CMH and they both claim to be disabled Vets, both claim to have been in the 5th Special Forces in Nam, Rick claims to have been Honor Guard at Arlington.

It's reported that every year just before Thanksgiving they go to Horseshoe Bend, Idaho City and Boise with phony DD 214's to Church's and anywhere else and get food and clothes and toy's, whatever they can get and the use the war Hero angle, then these dirt bags allegedly SELL what they got to poor people who should have received it free. They also panhandle bars and stores. They do this with dress Green uniform jackets on, with all the Army & Navy store metals they can get their hands on. They go as far as to leave one arm out of a sleeve like they lost an arm in war (they take turns at this). They have reportedly gone door to door in Boise collecting donations in the name of the VFW.

Hushton Jackson was born in 1963 and he claims he was in Nam in 1968, he also left Leadville area of CO reportedly because family services wanted him for child abuse. Rick Golding is from up state New York and had to leave Texas reportedly because some Vets got close to skinning him...  They both claim to have done training jumps out of special black op's aircraft that is classified, but didn't know what a c-119, c-130, or a c-141 was. They both claim to have been with the 5th SF and to have fought at hill 937 and they claim to have been there for the Tet offensive. Rick Golding claims to have been captured when the chopper he was a pilot of crashed at Son Tay prison rescue attempt. He also says he is a Karate expert and taught hand to hand combat at Fort Bragg.  Reportedly neither have drivers license or known social security numbers. They live in a "compound" and also claim to have the missing 128 books of the Bible and a few wives each. They hide in Loman Idaho right across from the Sourdough Diner, (that is where their compound of old mobile homes are), neither of them work....
NEITHER were POW's nor SF. NEITHER served in Nam. Prelim investigation finds ANY military service doubtful.

· I was captured in the Central Highlands and moved around for most of a year, later rescued by members of the 101st during an Arclight bombing. My proff of all this is one lone Med-Evac slip dated when I was recovered. Un like your Wanabees, I can't remember much of the incident, it's blanked out of my mind, and what you see here is more than I have ever said to anyone. I do know, and have been told that almost every bone in my body has been broken, at least once. I don't remember that.

Thank You, CWO Lloyd I Goldston USA (Ret)· For your information, I am a 100% disabled retired Veteran. I did not get POW status, because I did not have enough documentation to prove my status

· At 60 years old, I still ball like a baby if I try, and very few people other than the VA know about my military life. I was a Wrecker Operator (Recovery Specialist) in a maintenance Company in the wrong place at the wrong time.

· My records were lost or destroyed in Vietnam. The one paper I had to prove my status was the Med-Evac slip were as when I was re-patraited and returned to the US (Letterman Army Hospital at Presidio of San Francisco) Personel opened a new 201 file, later called a reconstructed 201 file. My parents have passed on, but I don't remember my folks every saying anything about the procedure you mentioned, or even the Western Union Telegram.

· I have worked with the best of the Spokane WA. VA staff, and other than making me cry like a baby, they have never been able to bring out information that I would like to know.

· Do you remember VT-26 out of Beeville Texas, and VT- 27, out of NAS Corpus Christie Tx?? My short six year Navy stint was there, then I went back to the Army, never missing a beat. I did Germany also and at one time was good in German. Have lost most of it now. My three children were born at the Nurenberg Army Hospital.

· I was shot in the left chest, left knee and left hand and a broken lower back. On a lung and a half, I seem to always get chest colds, but of all these physical wounds, my PTSD has given me the worst problems. Reading your emails I am amazed at how sharp and focused you seem to be. In my brief captivity, they never got me up north.

I also know that he has three children, Brandon, Jesse and Jenny. I believe the mother of these children, who are grown by now, was named Lisa. Ricardo doesn't remember an awful lot, and is not sure of some of the names, places and events that he does remember. Ricardo spent almost two years in a P.O.W. camp in vietnam. Retired Army Sgt. Maj. Grace, 57, was born into a military family at Fort Bragg, N.C.

"I like being active rather than being a desk jockey," Grace said of his decision to become an enlisted man rather than an officer.

Highlights of his career include service on the staffs of Gens. Norman Schwarzkopf and Tommy Franks during the 1990s and periodically assisting the Department of Defense military attache' in the White House from 1987 to 1997.

Grace said he also was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for six years.

He holds three Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars and a Bronze Star.

He uses a wheelchair because of a stroke and what he considers inadequate medical treatment, Grace said......

  • Would go on recon missions - come out barely alive, Viet houseman would make medicinal drinks and after he came back from unconsciousness, would go back out again.
  • Claims extensive medical training from Special Forces. Has worked as a Physicians Assistant for a cardiologist.
  • Claims he speaks Russian, Italian, Greek, Spanish and Vietnamese.
  • Has claimed to be a minister for Church of Christ in NC
  • Has claimed to be a Baptist minister in TX
  • Has claimed to be a Rabbi in Florida
  • May now be Mennonite
  • May now claim rank of Colonel.
  • Has been married several times - draining finances before leaving.
  • Claims HIS father was part of Philadelphia Project.

    ==============================
  • Claims  he got a battlefield promotion in Nam on his second tour ended up a Captain and was riffed to a GySgt., switched his commission to the Navy and retired a Navy Captain, reserve type.
  • Claims he and his squad left all ID behind in the DMZ, as they were "Force Recon" types, and he was the only one to survive an errant bomb blast that vaporized the others. He was thus captured, up North.
  • The story changed from that, and he claimed to being captured as an enlisted man by the Viet Cong and being held in a cage.  He said, "I love the rain." ... "No, I really do, that was the only time they (VC) wouldn't take us out of our cages and torture us, they didn't like to get wet and dirty."
  • The story changed yet again. This time he claimed a photography gig and how he had rescued Sgt. Major Puckett at Khe San, and how the good Sgt. Major wanted him to marry his daughter. He claimed battle field promotion to 2nd Lt., and how he and another Lt. were with 5 Montangyards doing their spying with the camera's and how they were captured and used as "slave labor" to carry the VC's equipment and how they shot the other Lt., right in front of Harold, because he had fallen and broken his leg. A VC was going to shoot Harold also, but the squad leader said something to the effect, you shoot him, Harold, and you will carry all the equipment.
  • Then there is the story about the "Bra" area and how Harold's squad rescued the Major that went drifting down the river.
  • And so it goes.
How he ever got a POW-VA card I'll never know. The people at the Grand Island VA, checked him out with Omaha and said he was good to go.

His whole team "vaporized" by an "errant bomb?" What was it…a B28 at min. yield, groundburst?

If it was that close to him, he wouldn't be here. These idiots have absolutely NO knowledge of bombs or explosives to say this kind of stuff.

Green, Mel NE 11/2005 Bus driver for Arrow Lines out of Omaha, Nebraska.  Claims he was a POW for 29 months from 1963 to 1967.  He said that he was in Special Forces in the Marines in a camp below the DMZ near the river and boarder of Cambodia and Laos, that was overrun.  He was taken to Laos, but first claimed Cambodia.  He killed two guards and as punishment everyone of his teeth were pulled out one at a time, one day at a time.  He was kept in a pit in the ground, that was covered with bamboo.  Some Air Force planes bombed the camp by mistake, and killed everyone so he escaped with the help of friendly Cambodians, and reached Thailand.  After he was taken home, he transferred into the Navy at the same rank and became an instructor at the Cherry Point Marine base.  He retired from the Navy as a Warrant Officer.   HINT: Never ever try t o con a REAL Vietnam POW returnee.

Testified under oath he had stated he was a Green beret,  C-14, POW for 3 month 22 days.

2005 - "He is still conning people and now his story is that he was a POW in VietNam got shot in the hip while he was escaping, ended up in a full bodycast and got his nurse pregnant. Stated under oath stating that he was a Green Beret and a POW. He says he doesn't have to pay taxes because he is on disability. He tells horrible stories of war atrocities that other Vets committed and this gave him PTSD.  Can you stop this guy from conning anyone else. He cheats people all the time and then blames it on the war, that the government made him into a liar----when he gets found out.. He was conning a cancer doctor in Farmington. He also conned a horse club in Colorado into believing he needed cancer treatments. He is a big Blowhard but always gets away with everything. Can you tell me what I can do to stop the lies."
