Very Bad Men: The Don Juan of Con
Airs April 20th, 2007 at 10:00 PM EST
Synopsis:
Through an Internet dating site, Joyce thought she'd met her perfect man. He was a handsome surgeon who exuded charm and kindness. After a tragic accident on the operating table, he needed a new beginning - he needed Joyce. So when he popped the question early on Joyce didn't hesitate for a moment, overjoyed to finally marry the man of her dreams. But the storybook ending turned sour when she discovered he wasn't a noble surgeon after all, but an army deserter who had perhaps six other wives and a string of prison convictions. This episode is a warning to us all, that if someone seems too good to be true, perhaps they are.

ONE MAN'S LIES, MANY LIVES DESTROYED

Today we'll meet an alleged serial bigamist and conman who is believed to have married at least 12 women, cheating many out of their life savings. Police say he used at least 20 different aliases and had five different social security numbers. He swept women off their feet and then he cleaned out their savings accounts, lied to them, cheated on them, and even allegedly abused some. He told one wife he was a surgeon on sabbatical, he told one he was a former professional football player, he told another he was a Vietnam vet, and yet another he was a bio-terrorism expert. He told people he was shot in Vietnam. He said John Ashcroft was a good friend of his. He even told one wife he had leukemia. Nothing he said was true. Today three of his former wives, his sister and a former business partner of his join us to share their stories

ROGER DALE BARNES: Doctor working for the VA, who says that he is a retired "Green Beret" Colonel, who has been awarded every medal for Valor except the MOH. Brags about the time his A-team "stole" a C-130 and flew it in to "save" a Battalion of Marines. Guess he must also be a pilot. Yeah, and I'm the Pope!!!

=============================

Roger Dale Barnes has claimed POW status for 100+ days to students at a High School in Murfreesboro, TN. He did this to several classes as part of a POW/MIA series to History classes. Several  adults were present. HE CLAIMED HIS RECORDS ARE STILL CLASSIFIED. He claimed the rank of Colonel US Army and is delusional about still being activated periodically. Last seen wearing a general's star.

========================
quote:

.... my father ....  was referred to him by the VA. After two sessions my father questioned his claims. Well, actually in true fashion, he said, “That fat ass is full of shit.”

Dr. Barnes claims were all visible in a huge shadow box on the wall:
SF Colonel
DSC ;DSM; Silver Star; Bronze Star; 5 Purple Hearts;
CIB; Ranger Tab; SF Tab; MFF (HALO) wings; Senior Jump wings; Air Assault Wings

and to top it all off, his DSC was still being considered for the MOH. Nice story about surrounded Marines, stolen C-130's and LBJohnson. Had some support from a "Quiet Professional" at the Special Forces Teamhouse. This "Quiet Pro" was awarded the DSC in
VietNam and is a member of the Legion of Valor, a veterans organization made up entirely of the recipients of the MOH, DSC, the Navy Cross and the Air Force Cross. It seems as though the list of these heroes is very short, add in the SF factor, and it becomes even shorter. And our hero Roger wasn't on it.  Thus the first entry in his section on your website.

So, I did some more snoopin & poopin and guess what? The guy didn't have a PH.D. either.

Mr. William O. Benedict first denied making this Claim when confronted with he fact that he is not listed on the Official Department Of Defense List of People Missing South East Asia, PMSEA. When the Newspaper insisted that they had quoted him correctly, and three School Board Members also stated that Benedict did in fact present himself as a Vietnam POW, he took the position that he had misspoke.

He now states that he was a POW of the Korean War.

ALLIANCE On Sunday afternoon, millions of people were thinking about football. At Freedom Square, about 100 people were thinking about America’s missing soldiers.

Local veterans groups held their 17th annual observance Sunday to remember the members of America’s armed forces who’ve gone missing in action or were prisoners of war. The ceremonies were done in conjunction with National POW/MIA Recognition Day, which is Friday.

“A country that forgets its warriors will itself be forgotten,” said Tony Gates, 59, of Alliance, who served with the Army in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. “There’s still a few thousand guys missing from that war. They’re somewhere.”

“We feel (this observance) is important because we have a war going on now,” said Rick Cade, 60, of Alliance, a Vietnam Army veteran who helped organize the event. “We still have missing from all wars, and we feel we deserve to have an accounting of them.”

MOTORCYCLE PARADE

The event kicked off at 2 p.m. when about 36 people — many of them veterans in vests and blue jeans — got on motorcycles at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3747 in Canton. Escorted by four Stark County sheriff’s deputies on motorcycles, they drove to Alliance in a procession the veterans called a “parade of lights.” One driver held a cell phone out the car window, apparently to snap a picture. At the State Street exit on Route 62, a man holding a baby girl watched as the veterans blew past him.

One of the riders, Frank Kemp, 60, of Pike Township, felt interest in the motorcycle procession from bystanders seemed to be less than in previous years.

“It’s kind of dwindling,” he noted sadly. “People are forgetting, and I hate to see that. ... people are busy or whatever.”

Pat Powell, the president of the Sharon Lane Memorial Chapter 199 Vietnam Veterans of America, said that the observance had to be held five days before the actual National POW/MIA Recognition Day because a motorcycling event next weekend would have hurt the turnout.

EMPTY CHAIRS, EMPTY TABLE

With a cool breeze and some clouds, the ceremony began at 3 p.m. at Freedom Square, which is on Main Street and Freedom Avenue. Nearby, someone had set up a table with four empty chairs, symbolizing the soldiers who never came home.

“When one American is not worth the effort to be found, we as Americans have lost,” said Sherman Brick, the president of the Alliance Veterans Council, as he gave his opening remarks. He then read a poem he said was written by Dutch Beyer, 64, of Canton, when he was held prisoner in Laos for 16 days during the Vietnam War.

“This flag stands for love: my love for my family, my love for my friends. I did not forsake it when I was beaten, when I was starved, when I was killed... under God I was captured. Under God I was saved. Under God I have no fear. ...” ...
NOT noted as a POW or MIA by DOD in the PMSEA.

Subject: Re: Follow Up Question On Mr. Darwin L. "Dutch" Beyer, NOT a Vietnam POW

My editors decided that not being on the POW list in Washington was not sufficient proof that someone wasn’t a POW. They decided that unless we could prove he wasn’t a POW, we weren’t going to do a correction.
