Son of Bluffs doctor killed in Iraq
Tom McMahon, Staff Writer
12/21/2007
A Navy SEAL, whose parents live in Council Bluffs, was recently killed
in action in Iraq.
Chief Petty Officer Mark T. Carter, son of Dr. Tom and Cindy Carter,
died Dec. 11 as a result of enemy action, according to a Department of
Defense press release.
Carter, 27, enlisted in the Navy after graduating from Fallbrook
Union High School near San Diego in 1998. He volunteered for SEAL
training in Coronado in 1999 and served with two West Coast SEAL teams
until 2004, when he was assigned to an East Coast-based team, said Naval
Special Warfare spokesman Lt. David Luckett. Carter was stationed at
Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Norfolk, Va., at the time of his
Iraq deployment.
His parents moved to Council Bluffs about six years ago, according to
Dr. Carter's partner, Dr. Alan Fisher. Tom Carter, a retired Air Force
physician, and his wife moved to Council Bluffs for the Alegent Health
position and to be in a strong Mormon community, Fisher said.
He never met Mark, but Fisher said Tom spoke of him as a courageous
daredevil and good athlete.
"They are devastated, of course," he said. "But, they
are proud of him. He was doing what he believed in."
A friend told the North County Times newspaper Mark's goal was to be
a Navy SEAL. He hung SEAL posters on his walls and enjoyed extreme
sports such as skateboarding, paint ball and rock climbing, according to
the Times.
As a SEAL, Carter earned a long list of honors, including two bronze
stars with "V" for valor, a Joint Service Commendation Medal
with "V" and various other awards for achievement, combat and
good conduct.
"Losing any of the warriors serving in Naval Special Warfare is
a significant loss, but losing a chief petty officer makes that loss
even tougher," said Luckett. "Like so many of his brothers in
the SEAL community, Chief Carter lived the SEAL Code, and his actions on
and off the battlefield embodied everything noble about serving in the
Navy and in Naval Special Warfare."
Fisher said Mark was on his fourth tour of duty in the war zone and
was scheduled to come home in two weeks.
Carter was buried Wednesday at Arlington National Cemetery, the 400th
Iraqi war veteran so honored.
Dr. Carter, his wife and Mark's three surviving brothers and four
sisters attended, Fisher said.
