at (vic VS535753) in DUC THANH District, PHUOC TUY Province, RVN. At that

Because he had never seen an American, Source and other soldiers of the 3d
Company went to observe the captured PW at the 1st Company area. The US PW
was not tied and was sitting on the ground. Source remained about two meters
from the PW for approximately 30 minutes. The PW was surrounded by a large
group of VC cadre and soldiers so it was impossible to determine the number of
guards. At approximately 1130 hours, the PW was taken to the 2d Battalion
Headquarters, located at (vic VS542750).

an empty pistol holder. Source heard that the weapon (type unknown) was
confiscated by the cadre of the 1st Company.

        (6) Physical Condition. The PW was not wounded and appeared to be
healthy. During the time of observation, the PW was given rice and fish, but
he ate little of it.

        (7) Personal Information. Source knew nothing about the PW's
background.

        (8) Capture Data. In Mar 65, the 2d Battalion, 1st Regiment, was
conducting operations in the area surrounding BINH GIA Strategic Hamlet, DUC
THANH District, PHUOC TUY Province, RVN. On 15 or 16 Mar, elements of the 2d
Battalion surprised and defeated an ARVN force at the XUON SON Rubber
Plantation, located at (vic YS5276). The result of this confrontation was
that seven ARVN soldiers and one American were captured (NFI). Source heard
that the US PW had been running and found himself surrounded by VC elements of
the 1st Company, 2d Battalion at (vic YS42760).  He was captured immediately;
when the US PW refused to cooperate or even move, the VC thought he was
wounded and brought him to the 1st Company Headquarters area. The US PW,
however, had not been wounded, and had been captured about an hour before
Source first observed him (heresay).

     c. Evacuation Procedures. Source heard from men n the 1st Company, 2d
Battalion, that the US PW was taken to 2d Battalion Headquarters at (vic
YS42750) (NFI).

     d. Biographical Correlation. The approximate date and location of
capture, as provided by Source, was cross referenced with corresponding
information in the MACV/IDHS PW Biographical File. It was discovered that no
one is listed as missing or captured in the grid square provided by Source for
the entire year of 1965.

     e. Photo Identification. Source was shown the JPRC US PW photo Album but
was unable to make an identification.

(U) COMMENTS: Source was cooperative throughout the interrogation but did
not volunteer information. Source was administered the Cross-Cultural IQ Test
and scored Low (8). This report partially satisfies the requirements of SICR
D-7CX-49018. (Prisoner of War Intelligence).
