15. SUMMARY
    
    (C) This report contains information on the sighting of a US PW in THUA
THIEN Province, RVN, in Dec 71, to include circumstances of sighting,
description of the PW, location of the PW sighting, and identification of
photos resembling the PW. THIS IS A BRIGHT LIGHT REPORT. MACV FOR JPRC.

    f. Circumstances of Return. On 29 Oct 72, Source's company came to Hill
51, PHU LOC District, THUA THIEN Province, RVN, to attack an ARVN unit, the 2d
Bn, 51st Regt, 1st Div. After arriving in the area of Hill 51, Source escaped
from his unit. He stayed in the jungle one night, and rallied to the 1st ARVN
Div on 30 Oct 72. He had decided to rally because he had become weary of the
hardships of war and because he was dissatisfied with life under Communism.
    
    g. Significant Activities:
    
    1953 to May 71: Source lived with his parents at his POB. From 1960 to
1964, 1966 to 1969 and in 1971 he attended school at his POB. In 1965 and 1970
Source remained art home because his family could not afford to pay for his
schooling.
    
    May to 17 Dec 71: In May 71 Source was drafted into the NVA. He was
assigned to the 3d Sqd, 1st Plat, 4th Co, 624th Bn, 320B Div, and received
basic infantry training for four and one half months at NHO QUAN District,
NINH BINH Province, NVN. On 20 Oct 71 Source finished training and went home
on ten days' leave to visit his family. He then returned to his unit for
infiltration. The 624th Bn left from NINH BINH Province, NVN and travelled by
train and truck to QUANG BINH Province, NVN. The men then walked through LAOS
and arrived in the jungle area of THUA THIEN Province, RVN on 17 Dec 71. The
men of the 624th Bn were assigned to the 6th Regt, TRI THIEN HUE MR. Source
was assigned to the 4th Sqd, 2d Plat, 3d Co, 6th Bn, 6th Regt, TRI THIEN MR.

2. (C) Sighting of One US PW in THUA THIEN Province, RVN:
    
    a. Circumstances of Sighting. In the end of Dec 71, Source and four other
men went to get rice for their unit; on the way back, Source saw one US PW
sitting beside the trail accompanied by two NVA guards. Source observed the PW
from a distance of ten to 20 meters for about two minutes. The PW was not tied
or blindfolded, and appeared to be in good health.
    
    b. Description of the PW:

The interrogator's friend is actually 23.)

    (17) Mustache or Beard: Thin mustache
    
    c. Capture Data. Source could not provide any information on the
circumstances of capture of the PW.
    
    d. Location of PW Sighting. Source sighted the PW approximately one day's
walk east of the borders of LAOS, QUANG TRI Province, RVN, and THUA THIEN
Province, RVN; and three days walk west of A VAO Highpoint (Interrogator's
Note: Source may mean A VO,  (vic) YD555015). This would place the PW
sighting (vic YD4103).
    
    e. Photo Identification. Source felt that the PW closely resembled the
photos of WILLIAM JOHN MAYHEW in Volume II of the Defense Intelligence
Agency's Prisoners of War and Missing in Action in Southeast Asia(U). He did
not identify photos of MAYHEW in Volume I as resembling the PW he saw.
(Interrogator's Note: WILLIAM JOHN MAYHEW was captured in NVN in Aug 68 and
thus could not have been the PW sighted in THUA THIEN Province, RVN.)
    
3. Comments: Source was cooperative and appeared to be of average
intelligence. Control questions revealed no attempts at deception.
