On May 25, 1969, a pallet of ammunition caught fire at a supply and storage area near Quang Tri, South Vietnam. The facility was maintained by elements of the 3rd Marine Division. As nearby Marines rushed to put out the blaze, the pallet took a direct hit from an incoming mortar round. The resulting explosion killed thirteen Marines and wounded nineteen more. Two others could not be located after the blast and were declared missing in action.
Private First Class Leroy Christopher Williams entered the U.S. Marine Corps from Florida and was a member of Company B of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. He was among the Marines who rushed to extinguish the burning ammunition pallet, and was one of the two men who could not be found after it exploded. It is believed that the force of the blast made recovery of his remains impossible. Today, Private First Class Williams is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
