Commander Frederick Herbert Whittemore entered the U.S. Navy from Nevada and served with Attack Squadron 212 embarked aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard (CV 31). On April 11, 1968, he piloted a single-seat A-4F Skyhawk as one of three on a mission to ferry aircraft from the Naval Air Station at Cubi Point, Philippines, to the Bon Homme Richard. He made one radio communication during the flight, but was not seen or heard from again. Attempts to locate him or his remains following the incident were unsuccessful. Today, Commander Whittemore is Memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
