MAJ CHARLES CORTENS WINSTON III

Return to Service Member Profiles

On October 25, 1977, the Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii (CILH, now DPAA) identified the remains of Major Charles Cortens Winston III, missing from the Vietnam War.

Major Winston joined the U.S. Air Force from New York and was a member of the 16th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. On August 1, 1967, he piloted an RF-101C Voodoo on a mission over enemy territory in Vietnam. Major Winston's aircraft crashed during the mission, and he was killed in the incident. His remains could not be immediately recovered. In September 1977, the Vietnamese government returned a set of remains to U.S. custody, and Maj Winston's remains were identified among them.

Major Winston is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
