On March 31, 1977, the Central Identification Lab-Hawaii (CILHI, now
DPAA) identified the remains of Major Samuel Edwin Waters Jr.,
missing from the Vietnam War.
Major Waters, who joined the U.S. Air Force from North Carolina,
served with the 12th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 388th Tactical
Fighter Wing. On December 13, 1966, he piloted an F-105D
Thunderchief (serial number 61-187) on a combat mission over
North Vietnam. During the mission, the Thunderchief was shot
down by a surface-to-air missile and Major Waters was killed.
Hostile presence in the area prevented recovery efforts
following the crash. In 1977, the Vietnamese government
repatriated remains which were later identified as those of
Major Waters.
