Second Lieutenant John Gates Spindler, who joined the U.S. Marine Corps from Missouri, was a member of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. On April 21, 1968, he was standing near an ammunition storage area in Quang Tri Province, when an enemy mortar shell struck the storage area, causing it to explode. Second Lieutenant Spindler was killed in the explosion, and the nature of his loss made the recovery of his remains impossible. Today, Second Lieutenant Spindler is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
