Seaman Kylis Therod Payne entered the U.S. Navy from Maryland and served aboard the fleet oiler USS Chipola (AO 63). On June 5, 1972, he went missing from the ship while it was operating in the South China Sea. Investigators concluded that he had fallen overboard and drowned in the vicinity of (GC) 49Q AU 837 541. His remains were never recovered. Today, Seaman Payne is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
