On January 7, 1970, an F-4E Phantom II (tail number 67-357) carrying two crew members took part in a two-plane practice air-intercept mission off the coast of South Vietnam, in the vicinity of (GC) 49Q CU 256 229. During the mission, the Phantom entered a downward left turn that it could not pull out from. One member of the Phantom’s crew ejected from the plane before it crashed into the water and exploded. This crew member was successfully rescued, but the other crew member could not be recovered after the crash.
Captain Robert Ochab, who joined the U.S. Air Force from New York, was a member of the 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron. He was the aircraft commander aboard the Phantom when it went down, and is not known to have ejected from the aircraft before it crashed. His remains have not been recovered, and he is still unaccounted for. Today, Captain Ochab is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
Based on all information available, DPAA assessed the individual's case to be in the analytical category of Non-recoverable.
