CAPT MONTE LARUE MOORBERG

Return to Service Member Profiles

On October 7, 1985, the Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii (CILHI, now DPAA) identified the remains of Captain Monte Larue Moorberg, missing from the Vietnam War.

Captain Moorberg entered the U.S. Air Force from Nebraska and served with the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On December 2, 1966, he piloted an F-105D Thunderchief (tail number 59-1820, call sign "Cactus 01") on a strike mission against the Phuc Yen petroleum products storage area in Vinh Phu Province, North Vietnam. While flying in the target area, the aircraft caught fire for unknown reasons, broke apart, and crashed, killing Capt Moorberg. A strong enemy presence in the area prevented the recovery of his remains at the time. In 1985, the Vietnamese government repatriated human remains correlating to this loss, and U.S. investigators were able to identify Capt Moorberg from those remains.

Captain Moorberg is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
