Here is a picture of the American flag I helped to make in the
prisons of Hanoi.
The materials are all scrapes of old clothing, the threads
were pulled out of towels and blankets. The needle we used was a piece of old
wire found outside in our courtyard. One end was scrapped on the concrete floor
to make the point. The other end was flattened with a rock and then a hole was
punched thru it the form the eye.
The flag was presented to President Nixon at the dinner party
he had for the POWs upon our return. It turned out to be the largest dinner
party ever at the White House.
The flag is now in the Nixon Library in a display for the
Vietnam POWs.
