Gunnery Sergeant Roger Dale Hamilton entered the U.S. Marine Corps from Maryland and was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. On April 21, 1967, his squad participated in an assault on a village in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam, in the vicinity of Grid Coordinates BT 050 290. During the attack, the unit came under heavy enemy fire and was forced to withdraw. However, GySgt Hamilton had been wounded during the action, and the other members of his unit were not able to remove him as they withdrew. Search and rescue teams returned to the area the following day but could not locate GySgt Hamilton or his remains, and further attempts to locate or identify him were unsuccessful. Today, Gunnery Sergeant Hamilton is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
